Rive gauche is simply a much better fragrance in every respect IMO.

Hmm some very rapid answers to your questions:

    Fresh? RG
Old vibe? tough - Safari is more 1980's, whereas RG is more of a 1940's frag. Depends what smells you associate with 'old'.
    Clean? RG
Nauseant? neither, maybe Safari if you had to pick one, but that's just from what I hear from others. I really like both of them, and neither nauseate me.
    Versatile? RG
    Rich? Safari
Harsh? I find both to be smooth as silk, so I'm not saying one way or the other.

+1 on this, although they are not similar at all in any way to me

RG smells like shaving foam. Safari smells like Ron Jeremy (some say Burt Reynolds).

Maybe my nose is under-trained, but I don't get much similarities between the two, apart from a certain powderiness (though differently crafted) and a certain oldie vibe (in a positive way) in both.

Two answer the questions more precisely and specifically, yet from a personal opinion, I'd say:

which is more fresh? Rive Gauche by a mile
which is more old vibe? both and both in good, creative, stylish way, but Rive Gauche is balanced by, if not more trendy or contemporary, maybe at least more timeless, more clean-cut, no-nonsense notes
which is more nauseant? in different ways, both, but as Rive Gauche has much more clean soapiness, it almost automatically makes Safari a slight bit heavier and more overpowering
which is more versatile? again, Rive Gauche stands out
which is more rich vibe? both, in different ways, Safari for its gourmand associations with slightly exotic Old World luxury, Rive Gauche because it suggest the most exclusive, gentlemanly and conservative barbershop of the very same Old World
which is more harsh? in fact, if applied too abundantly, Rive Gauche may become unexpectedly pungent, even slightly abrasive and acidic, yet Safari is also to be applied carefully and in sparse quantities.
