Good morning all !. Day off with an early start but I can't say I am looking forward to it. Received desperately worrying reports concerning a lifelong friend and heading up to Yorkshire to try and provide some moral support. I have little medical knowledge but having been informed of his symptoms / appearance I really think I have to prepare for the worst, even as a born optimist. A number of us are rallying round today to try and lift his spirits. Good vibes would be gratefully received - thanks in anticipation.

Good morning everyone I have a Nightshift weekend and tonight the first out of three shifts. I think it's ok working at night, but would prefer to have the weekend off. It suited me quite well to sleep in today. I went to a concert with Jarle Bernhoft yesterday. It was awsome. Jon, I'm so sorry about your friend. I'll keep my fingers crossed for him! Today's synch I find a bit confusing. I could either wear my first classic scent, that I felt was a bit of sn investment at the time ( Shalimar) or my first Niche ( Chergui). I think I 'll go for the Chergui. It took some effort to aquire it. At the time I was unaware that I could simply get it on the Serge Lutens site Have a great weekend all , and hugs to those in need of one.

Always makes me chuckle to see weather in the 50-60's described as cold as that's when we usually expect summer is on its way :-). Currently it's -2F here. I'm wearing Embers again, continuing from last night. I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend. Stay safe and warm all!

I guess you could say wearing my own MadHat Embers would have me fall in for "investment perfume" as well. I put a TON of time into tincturing the specific incense tears, resins and gums to create the fragrance...while waiting several months for the materials to mature as well.

It was Below Freezing this morning where I am in West Central FL. -1 C. We don't have the "infrastructure" down here for that - no heater, no insulated coats or boots, breezy houses that are about as cold in as out. Best we can do is pile everyone into one bed and sleep till it goes away!

But yes, I am cold when it's 60F.

    Ain't that the truth.

Donna's SotD, Rochas Femme, is a goodie. I smelled Rochas in the vial I have and enjoyed the sniff, but for an all-day chypre that I think qualifies as a classic, I am turning to J-L Scherrer cuz it's got that green thang.

Venturing out in Véga after an overnight low of -17°F in Cleveland. Looking forward to hearing the formidable Yefim Bronfman and the Cleveland Orchestra in Brahms first piano concerto. It will be a mother-daughter outing. My son confessed "the smell of perfumes coming from everywhere" drives him nuts at SeveranceHall [sigh]. He does get sensory overload, so this is understandable, and he's not averse to a spritz of DK Essences Jasmine from time to time, nor does he mind that I wear fragrance.

    Hello everyone,

I'm not in synch today. I don't have anything I consider an investment, although, Xscent, I hear what you're saying as far as ROI. I sort of think of every bottle I buy as an investment in future good smells, so looking at it that way, maybe I am in synch today.

My hand went for Hiris this morning. Something tells me I should probably look into getting a backup of this one. I would never want to be without it.

    So...about my sync today...

When I think of the first scent that I 'invested' a lot of my own money in, the scent that I really had to splurge on because I was so excited about fragrances...and had fallen-down-the-rabbit-hole as they say it would definitely be Parfum des Merveilles by Hermes. I still remember buying it at Bloomingdales and the SA was so excited for me she wrapped it up all nice and pretty. But I drained that bottle years ago so...

Instead I decided to wear the ONLY scent that I have actually bought as a financial 'investment'. If you haven't read about my aged Mysore sandalwood oil from the thread I created last month of the Men's board I've copied it below - it will explain what I mean when I say this stuff is an "investment":

Last week I acquired a bottle of 15 year old Mysore sandalwood. Not a small bottle - a rather large bottle. It was due in part to the generosity of a fellow perfume enthusiast and someone who was in the essential oil business fifteen (15) years ago, back when Mysore sandalwood wasn't rare and extinct due to over harvesting.

I cannot express how incredibly happy I am to own this. For someone who wore Mysore sandalwood as a teen (in the 1980's) I've always struggled to recreate that same unique experience with sandalwood fragrances and oils for almost my entire time here on Basenotes. When I got a small sample of this, before I acquired the bottle, and I put some on my skin for a full wearing (I dabbed some on with some unscented body lotion) it took me about a few minutes and I knew 'This is it!!!!'.

Real Mysore sandalwood oil smells slightly lactic, a bit 'creamy' and then intensely woody, resinous (almost like something that gives off vapors) - not sweet. Only a tiny bit 'green', but much more 'brown', worn-in. Sillage is (like many oils, other than oud) moderate. But the tenacity and longevity is amazing - it lasts all day when I wear several drops all over my arms, back of my neck and chest.

The only other place I've even seen aged Mysore sandalwood oil for sale is Dominque Dubrana's Profumo.it site (his is ten years old and the going rate is around 140 Euros for 1 milliliter). I am sure there are other places people sell real aged Mysore but I've always been skeptical of those I see on eBay & honestly I never heard of others. I sort of resigned myself to living vicariously through my old vintage fragrances that contain it (like the vintage Extract of Mysore Sandalwood by Crabtree & Evelyn, vintage Bois des Iles and Egoiste by Chanel, etc...) and just thought that I would never be able to ever to experience having an adequate amount of oil in my Wardrobe.

    Well now I can.

Lucky me! I can't think of a greater way to ring in 2015.
The way I see it, I've got an oil that is only going to get better-and-better smelling as it ages and it will only increase in value. In about 5 years it'll be twenty (20) years old and by then (who knows) maybe I'll sell of some if I haven't worn it all.

The price of the Profumo.it 10 year old oil is (as of todays Euro exchange rate) $159 for 1 ml. That means if you price mine out at the same price my 45 mls is worth +$7,000 US dollars.
