I read a review of Mukhalat Malaki Swiss Arabian for men which comes under the heading of 'animalistic'. Do people mean that it smells of musk or civet? What, in your view, is the best of this type of fragrance for a man?

Both musk and civet afaik. Jules by Dior.
"Le parfum est la musique du corps" (Marcel Rochas)
Potent with civet and musk.
Are there any designer animalic fragrances widely available in mall retail outlets? I'd love to check them out later today when I am out and about. Thanks.
Edit: ...besides Chanel Antaeus, which I assume is at the tame end of the animalic/animalistic continuum.

As others were saying, animalic refers to various types of musks and civet, which give the feel of warm skin, lived in, even slightly dirty.
Unfortunately pretty much out of fashion in current mainstream perfumery. I'd say you could check Aramis (leathery musky) and Kouros (though tamed from its previous self - but it's still recognizably "urinal" like, a mix of very clean and very dirty). If you can find it (in upscale department stores), Guerlain Jicky and Mouchoir de Monsieur for civet. If your mall has Kiehl's, try also their Original Musk, which is a straightforward dark musk (they also have a shower gel, which I always found an interesting proposition - a shower gel that makes you feel as if you didn't take a shower).
