Question Interested in XerJoff Oud Stars - but which one?

    Hello all,

on my journey to find an oud fragrance I like, I discovered the XerJoff Oud Star series. There is no way for me to try them in a store, so I have to order samples. But even the samples are very expensive, so I want to determine which one(s) I´ll probably like best.

    So far I´ve tried:
    - Kilian Pure Oud - couldn´t stand it, burnt rubber, extremely oily and smokey
    - Kilian Incense Oud - good
    - Kilian Amber Oud - very good, the best of the Kilian bunch to me
    - Kilian Rose Oud - too feminine
    - Armani Oud Royal - too sour at the end (smells like it has vetiver in it on my skin)
    - Creed Royal Oud - the opening is too dry and woody for me
    - Aramis Perfume Calligraphy - too fruity which doesn´t fit to oud in my opinion
    - Montale - tried five but couldn´t stand a single one as they all smell horrid to me

So I´m basically looking for a smooth oud with a sweet/ambratic base, but still a masculine twist.

Which one to choose from Fars, Najaf, Gao, Al Khatt, Mamluk and Zafar?

Well Scent7 I'm glad we're not trying on shoes today and I'm the salesman.
I like sweet ouds. Kilian Pure Oud is my favorite but I don't get burnt rubber or oiliness or smoke from it. I also really like
Dior Leather Oud which is also a little sweet. Montale Dark Oud is a nice assertive oud which has a little piney quality to it, but
you said you didn't like the Montales. Gao,one of the Xerjoffs is my favorite of them, but it is a bit reminiscent of Montal Dark Oud.
Amouage Epic I think has a little oud in it along with great frankincense and is a great fragrance. For a masculin twist I reach around my back to spray my other wrist. All the Xerjoffs are worth trying.

Mamluk is the one that might fit your bill. Given your aversion to challenging ouds, I recommend to stay carefully away from Zafar.

Out of the Xerjoff Oud Stars I tried I only found Mamluk to be wearable without the Oud funk but that was because I could not detect any Oud in the composition. To be honest I would stay away from the Xerjoff Oud stars as they imo more challenging than the above list of yours that you don't like.

I like the Xerjoff line, especially Zafar, Najaf, Gao, and Mamluk. Based on your feedback, however, I think you'll have more luck with something along the lines of Mona D'Orio - Oud.

It also is a heck of a lot better than all of them put together, IMO.

I think this is a good recommendation for you. Maybe Heeley Agarwood too......sweet and simple.

I'm curious, why do you continue to search for an oud based fragrance? Out of the 12 that you've tried, you've only given a positive rating for 2 of them, and those 2 happen to smell very little of oud. Perhaps oud is not for you'd.

If you're determined to find one from Xerjoff, I think Malmuk is best suited for you.

@all: thank you for your advice... seems like this line is not for me. I´ll definately check out the Mona di Orio Oud, maybe that´s the one...

@JiveHippo: well, it seems to me that it adds a touch of "3D" to a fragrance as long as there´s not too much of it mixed in. But I was thinking the same thing - maybe it´s not for me

I´m not going to order an expensive sample of Mamluk, but I´m most likely going to order one of Mona di Orio. And if that´s not what I´m looking for - there are more than enough heavenly fragrances out there with no oud in them

Perhaps you should try Agar Musk by Ramon Monegal. It's so inoffensive I might have to call it 'laundered' oud.
