Default Re: how many shoes should a man have?

I have 8 pairs of shoes and basically use always the same 2. I have another 3-4 pairs buried somewhere in the closet.

This said, it's obviously a matter of style, age, needs. Young sneaker-fans will need 300 pairs of shoes to comply with fashion trends and to spot some "cool" stuff at the club. I barely go out for a walk to my tailor, to the library, to the hairdresser, or for a stroll in the park, so my 8 pairs are even too much for me - 4 are black, 4 are brown, some are suede, some are buckled... these can go with hundreds of outfits.

I have a whole crate of shoes , half I never wear . It really depends on how much you are willing to invest . The problem with men's shoes is that they tend to be more expensive than womans so many times a man only has 1/5th of what his female counter-part has . My best gf has over 300 while I may have close to 40-50.

I think this really depends on the type of work a man does, and the nature of his social life. I can really wear whatever I wish to work, and Doc Martens are my standard, for comfort and support as much as for style.

    2 pairs standard black DMs
    1 pair DM wingtips
    1 red pair DMs
    1 pair funcky peach DMs
2 pair formal dress shows (Kenneth Cole), one brown and one black
    2 pairs of athletic shoes

So, look like 9 for me, and that covers all I need.

Yeah, 20 pairs are way too many. I have 3 pair now, though I need more.

No maximum if it pleases you. However, bear in mind we are so lucky to have even one pair. Find a tramp or a charity shop and donate a pair you don't need any more. Share the love, share the shoes

Well... a have a problem with shoes, in fact, two. One, it seems that they last half a century on my feet, and, two, my feet are quite small. Once a selaswoman told me to go and get the last children's number at M&S. Not only that, she came back later with another woman. Perhaps they've never seen a man wearing 6,5 before. So, I have many ...

I have over 35 or so pairs of shoes - but I don't wear most of them. Medical people told me to go buy good shoes, and explained the characteristics to look out for. Basically, when the toe part is pressed back, good shoes don't bend from the halfway mark, but from under the ball of the foot mark.

Unfortunately the very good shoes cost around $150 to $300 a pair. So, when I saw Rockport shoes going for $80 instead of $300, I bought 3 pairs. Same with Florsheims. Then, when I saw Niblicks going for $20, $40 or $50 instead $140 or $150, I bought 8 or so pairs.

Then when I saw assorted runners and casual shoes which met the medical criteria going for $10 or $15 at one store's sell out, I bought another 20 or so pairs. At that price, I can afford to actually test and discard shoes that I don't like the feel of after a couple of days. And some which I wound up not liking for casual use, turned out excellent for work use around my big backyard.

I have three slip-on walking shoes specifically for use when on long flights to Europe. And over in Europe I ran into a snag with my Niblicks, they were a bit wide and it's easy to press on the accelerator while braking in their smaller cars. So I've mainly been using Florsheim walkers over there.

Hush Puppy walkers that cost around $120 I used and liked, but for some reason, they kept going quite smelly on me. I threw them out, and haven't bought any since.

I've given away about 15 pairs of shoes that I wound up not liking, about half from before I got the medical advice, and half from the later purchases.

The moral of this sad tale of mine - while you are young you can get away with wearing either average cheap or expensive shoes that look quite classy, but aren't actually very good for your feet. But as you get older, it catches up with you.
    Regards,
    Renato

As far as dress shoes are concerned, one doesn't need more than 3 or 4 pair at a minimum, but they must be high quality calf leather or shell cordovan. English shoes are among the best, then Italian. The only real good American shoes are Alden and Allen Edmunds. I probably have about 20 or more pairs of shoes, including sneakers. My dress shoes are Alden, Edward Green, Church's, Foster & Son, Sutor Mantellassi, Fratelli Rosseti, etc.

One actual pair of shoes, the ones I wear for work, and they are Chelsea boots anyway. A pair of brogue boots for winter, a pair of Timberland boots for when the weather is really bad, desert boots for nights out spring summer and autumn, and about 15 pairs of trainers, mostly adidas.

Apart from work I wear jeans all the time, trainers look much better for the establishments I drink in

    Bingo!

Or . . . as many as you like.

    Bingo!

    Hot damn, that actually works!

I was going to say that I think for most guys all in all around 15-20 would be a good overall well rounded wardrobe and somewhere around 25-30 there are probably some bad buys or ones that get neglected in there etc

Actually I like this better, it gives me an excuse for a pair of Edward Green monk straps.

I'd say as many as you like.

If you like to be practical and savings-savvy then less is more but always keep one or 2 pairs more than the absolute minimum required for your personal needs in case of "accidents".
