    Default What was Opium Like?

I know, I know--Opium's reformulation has been discussed before, yet it seems no one has really pinned down the difference between the vintage and current versions. I have a sample of the current edt, and I think it smells great, a well-done aldehydic amber. Your thoughts?

I recall it being hot spices, woody, incensy - big, bold, very distinctive. I'd have to revisit the new version to make a comparison, but there were no aldehydes.

There was a strange tropical fruit, almost pineapple note in the top. It was rich and spicy, and quite a bit like Youth Dew (oh, but that has probably been reformulated too).

I remember it being more cinnamon spicy, less brain-piercing (my term for aldehydes.)

Okay aldehydic warm amber sounds about like what I sniffed at the dept store awhile back.Opium (vintage ) isn't supposed to be that--tame for want of a better term.
Opium's pow -hit of spices should be compareable to A*men in strength and sillage. To put it into the gourmand range rather than the spice range ,it would be like if someone said "Here's A*men your favorite "handing you a bottle .You spray eager to be reunited with a past favorite. And instead of A*men (candyfloss/tar/woods/Patchouli) you find you've sprayed Mariah Carey M(light marshmallow, floral, and soft driftwood) Not that the second is BAD but it is NOT really anywhere near the same and is cheating longterm consumers by trying to market it as the same thing .It would have been a very nice summer flanker option in my opinion.

Check out the "Perfume Shrine" blog; I think it's one of her favorites:

It opened with a nuclear bang of orangeblossom(or orange of some kind) and spices. I admit the opening was my favourite part. Actually if you go sniff EL Cinnabar, it smelt quite like that in the dry down. Spicy hot yet amber smooth.

I bought my first bottle in France in 1980, I still have the little plastic bag from the perfume shop I bought it. The lady was so kind, I got minis of Rive Gaude and Y.

I remember Opium like this but with the pineapple, as David Ruskin said.

I love vintage Opium. I don't smell the pineapple, which is a good thing, as I'm not a fan of tropical fruit notes in general. When Ylang Ylang smells like Banana to me I literally can't get the juice off my body fast enough!

First of all there was Youth Dew, made for Estee Lauder by IFF. Then along came Opium, made by IFF for YSL. Estee Lauder accused IFF of giving the Youth Dew formulation to YSL, and so produced Cinnabar, a knock off of Opium, which was a knock off of Youth Dew. Strange days.
