    Default a must-have for every man's collection

What do you think is a must-have for every man's collection.

That's affordable, versatile, masculine (but modern), projects, lasts, is original, works well in all seasons and is overall well made.

My pick goes to L'Homme by Yves Saint Laurent.

    What about you?

    Chanel Egoiste is my pick.

    Terre d'Hermes.

It's popular for a reason, and as usual getting a lot of hate because of it.

Old Spice. Modern formulations are pretty good. Cost certainly isn't an objection. A genuine crowd-pleaser. Go ahead, spring for the $7 or so. You'll end up loving it. Not exactly modern, but classic in the way Levis 501s are classic. Always works. So classic it's modern again.

Green Irish Tweed, from a discounter to assist with that affordable requirement. Cool water if the discount GIT price is still a bit of a stretch.

Egoiste is very nice, but it's not very versatile. It's too strong for hot days and generally not suited for younger people.

Couldn't agree more. Even as I've tried hundreds of designers and dozen of niche, Cool Water is still a mainstay for me.

I feel as though Fahrenheit, dior homme, and LIDG/LIDGE are a few you "must try". I can see why you picked L'homme as a "must have" because it's safe and versatile. It's hard to pick "must haves" because there will always be someone who doesn't like what you say or think something else is better at what it does.

    Unfortunately, it's discontinued.

But if it would still be in production, it would be Spazio Krizia.
Elegant yet fresh, quite versatile indeed, vastly underrated, also decent projection and longevity, its price was (excluding the overpriced few bottles probably still left) the average designer fragrance price, while still in production and readily available.

I see your point, but it's a scent that is wearable and artistic at the same time. It probably won't blow away someone who doesn't like fragrances. As I learn more and more about fragrances, I steer away from ones made to impress the general public. I look for things that are well-crafted and that make use of notes well. Frankly, Egoiste is more interesting than most of the fragrances in your top 10. Sorry if this is preachy, but it blows the shit out of L'Homme.

Oh yeah, I'd say either Egoiste or Terre d'Hermes.

I suspect this is a rhetorical question, but I'll bite.

Yes, this kind of thing is arbitrary and cultural rather than inherently truthful, but I'd say 30 and up (as an opinion, not a fact). Some people in their 20's can pull it off, but many non-basenoters will find this too sweet, too old school and too strong.

No doubt about that. I agree Egoiste (and we can add Desert Marocain as well) are both great works of art. But scents like L'Homme and my others have more utility and versatility. It's not about pleasing people for me, but I have to be in the mood to appreciate scents like Egoiste and Marocain, but this is just me. To me, scents are for wearing rather than keeping just for display, but what I liek to wear and what you like to wear are different.

'Affordable' is subjective, but I guess you mean cheap(ish). In that case, definitely one of the AdP range.
