Thread: Suggest a formal evening scent
I know this is done quite often so apologies for repitition, however I am after a new formal evening scent and would like some suggestions.
I'm 25 years old and would like a nice, sharp, elegant scent that I can wear on evenings out. Not a club scent but a scent with some class that has decent longevity and projects well but not beastly. I'm in the UK so we only have hot weather a few months of the year and even then evenings aren't that hot.
Please take a look at my wardrobe and if you would take the time to make a suggestion for a good addition, it would be much appreciated!
You've got a few bases covered in your wardrobe, but nothing like this:
Van Cleef and Arpels pour homme
Classy, masculine, and very cheap for the quality.
Try it and tell me I'm wrong.
----- People laugh at me because I'm different.... I laugh at them because they're all the same -----
I'd like to suggest the new Armani Eau de Nuit pour Homme.
Some bottles for sale (Worldwide) - YSL Jazz Prestige, Ungaro I, Joop Nightflight, Tsar, etc.
"Le parfum est la musique du corps"
Clive Christian X
Clive Christian No. 1 pure parfum
Dior Homme Intense or New York by Parfums de Nicolai would be perfect.
Brooks Brothers Gentleman New York. Simple and understated.
Guerlain Homme L'Eau Boisée ..
From your wardrobe, I'd recommend L'Occitane's Vetyver, as I think it's classy, modern, and sufficiently restrained to satisfy your requirements for class, good longevity, and good but not overpowering projection.
For additions to your wardrobe, I'd recommend the following, all of which I own, love, and garner me oodles of compliments:
Inexpensive (<$40/bottle) - Yves Rocher Comme Une Evidence
Moderate ($50 to $85/bottle) - Rochas Moustache (a lime-based fougere) or Dior Eau Sauvage (a citrusy, vetiver-based floral; caveat = its longevity of 3-4 hours may be a bit fleeting for your taste)
Pricier (>$100/bottle) - Santa Maria Novella's Potpourri - this stuff is both old world and other worldly. Despite that it's an EdC, this stuff lasts 12+ hours on me
Enjoy your treasure hunt!
+1 Dior Homme Intense
Orieno, if you'd like people to look at your wardrobe, I think there's a way to show it in your post. You should do that to save people the trouble of taking an extra step in trying to help. Some people will be snarky about it, too, though personally I don't care.
From your wardrobe, I think I'd begrudgingly say Pi is the one that fits your preference the most. Mind you, I'm not a big fan of Pi, but most of your scents are what I'd consider either daytime scents or more casual scents. Now, any scent can be worn at any time -- for example, Live Jazz is in your wardrobe, and that's a fine scent, but is not usually considered an "evening" scent -- but I'm just giving you my impressions here.
My personal favorite for formal evening events is Chergui, but I don't think you have it. After Chergui, I sometimes wear Tiffany for Men, Van Cleef & Arpels Pour Homme, or Dior Homme for formal night events. Again, I didn't see those in your wardrobe.
Do you like Eau des Baux? I just ordered a bottle on a whim, which is my first blind buy (even though I say never blind buy) in a year or so.
Current Top Ten:
1. Creed Millesime Imperial
2. Serge Lutens Chergui
3. Hermes Concentre d'Orange Verte
4. Creed Virgin Island Water
5. Chanel Eau de Cologne
6. Thierry Mugler Pure Havane
7. Van Cleef & Arpels Pour Homme
8. Bulgari Blu
9. Bond No. 9 New Haarlem
10. YSL Kouros
Tom Ford Extreme, perhaps.
I think Tom Ford Grey Vetiver works well in formal situatioms.
+1 Clive Christian Pure Parfum. Totally worth selling your house to own this in my opinion.
Prada Amber Pour Homme
Pure Distance M
Jardin d' Amalfi
Portrait of a Lady
Absolue pour le soir
I think Dior Homme is a great contemporary addition that could work. But I also think something with more of a classical inclination would be great for a dressed up night out as well as just giving your wardrobe something it lacks. Having said that, anything along the lines of:
New York Parfums de Nicolai
Tiffany For Men
Chanel Pour Monsieur
Caron 3rd Man
I think any of those would bring something new.
I'm liquidating my collection to help fund my site. Please show your support for the FPindex and buy buy buy - Tuscan Leather, Egoiste, Costume National 21, etc!

Habit Rouge EDP is also a winner.
I feel that for a man, the formal mood is best communicated by a perfume with a strong feminine heart. Dior Homme (or Intense) works very well like this. Rose and oud work magnificently too, as does Chergui!
Dior Homme Intense
I did look at your wardrobe and would recommend -
Gucci Pour Homme I (2003)
Zino Davidoff (Script Logo/Original formulation)
Balenciaga Cristobal Pour Homme (2000)
If you cannot find an affinity with at least one of those scents, I would be surprised.
The key is your age. None of these smell 'dated' (which I don't believe any ways - it is the man that makes the scent), but the main point I am emphasizing with these is that they smell serious, seductive and have fantastic allure. All of them can be worn in the evenings in London for formal attire and bring you compliments...yet, each is different and the vibe is unique to each bottle.
“Some perfumes are as fragrant as an infant’s flesh, sweet as an oboe’s cry, and greener than the spring; While others are triumphant, decadent or rich; Having the expansion of infinite things, like ambergris and musk, benzoin and frankincense, which sing the transports of the mind and every sense.”

Chanel pour Monsieur
Thank you for the input so far. I haven't had a chance to write a detailed reply yet and I'm rather busy with work today but will reply to some of the suggestions when I get the chance.
Please do keep suggestions coming if any spring to mind
