Default Finally pulled the trigger and bought a bottle of MJ Bang.

I'm probably one of the few who hasn't smelled this fragrance yet. The place I bought this from was basically giving it away for the price of shipping. I've read some reviews and comments and this seems to be one of the most polarizing fragrances that's been released in the last few years. I already own A*men Taste of Fragrance and I enjoy the chili pepper note in it. How much pepper is in Bang and is that pretty much all their is?

I liked it's rugged charms when I tested this in a store, lots of pepper and woods. A good simple minimalistic composition good for everyday casual use.

I like it too. There is quite a lot of pepper in it, and a big dose of iso e super. You must like iso e super to enjoy this fragrance. Hermes Poivre Samarcande is like 10x the price, and really not that much different.

I found it somewhat harsh, but might consider springing for a bottle at the right price. Seems like something that could grow on you. The unusual packaging has its charms, too.

The pepper gives this one a big kick in the initial spray. But the base turns to a pretty good frag. The longevity on this one is not bad either (about 8 hours).

    Nice turn of phrase there.

    Pulled the trigger...Bang.

    That's what's supposed to happen.

I haven't tried this one yet; interesting bottle.

Welcome to the barbecue! The marinating section to be precise.

Kitschy bottle notwithstanding, the dry down's pretty decent.

LOVE Bang. Possibly my favourite "designer" (I hate those labels) scent. NOT just about pepper.

The pepper note is overpowering IMO. I'm not a fan of pepper when used in perfume, so this is a big thumbs down for me.

One of my favourite fragrances. Just love the pepper and powder combo.

Pure pepper, almost too much in the opening. But I find that it settles down pretty fast into a nice pepper/spice/woods scent and stays close to the skin. I love black pepper and found this cheap as well, so I picked up two bottles and the shower gel for a great bargain.

Wife loves this one. I think there's some vetiver in there, too, but I'm not sure. Peppery no doubt.

It was from an Ebay seller who said his wife didn't care for it. Was one of those auctions that you put a bid on to just to throw some change at it and some how no one else bids on it.

I totally agree. I own a bottle of Bang and love it. It's also a compliment whore scent, for sure, when I wear it I'm always getting responses from people.

I spritzed some from a Saks back when it came out and remember thinking that if I didn't already have the 'peppery/cedar vibe' covered with the likes of GPI, Tumulte, Visit, etc., I'd of given it more consideration at the time.

I will throw in a like and my two cents as well. To me, a nice blend of peppercorns (pink, white, black) that is on a heart/base (as I find this more two-dimensional than three...just opening and then base notes) of elemi resin (a note I really like in Oscar de la Renta for Men), a touch of benzoin, clean vetiver, white moss and patchouli. The 'heart' phase probably lasts 10 minutes or less.

I believe while it is wearable on its own, it actually does well in blending scents - especially since it doesn't have any citrus. It goes well with bright citrus - grapefruit, lemon, and okay with warmer orange (not so well with lime). I also like blending it with scents that have a light pepper note and you can add a shot or two and turn up that note. Iso E Super is probably fairly high in here...but it is not headache inducing. It actually warms and wears relatively close after 30 minutes or so.

Total longevity for me is around 4 hours or so on skin. I spray on my shirt to add some longevity and power.

For the price, I "like-a da pepper", says 'Pepper Boy' played by Adam Sandler on SNL. I concur. Women do like it - not one I reach for often, but appreciate.

    Cheers,

    ericrico

I have it - and I like to layer it with Azzaro Chrome Legend. A light dusting of Bang with a light dusting of Legend.
Overdoing it on either will require Tums.

Bang is heavy on the pepper for the first hour, then it gets woody. I am not sold on it as a stand alone, but I'm glad others have a different experience. That's the name of the frag game...

Feel bad for those (seemingly the majority) that get poor longevity with this. I can still smell this sucka when I wake up the next day. No idea about how many hours exactly - it just keeps going on me.

I'll join the chorus of Bang fans. It's the only new designer fragrance I've purchased in the last few years. At first, all I got was pepper, but I liked it. Now, I can detect more notes, especially the woods. I think this is very under appreciated, and I agree that the bottle design (and ad campaign) were perhaps a bit over-the-top for many people and probably limited the appeal.

Wore it today and I gotta agree that this is an odd one. Was expecting a huge pepper note in the opening, but what I got was medical adhesive bandage roll, wood that's just had a layer of turpentine, and something that smells like a slightly sweet black licorice (my wife said this and I agree). I own A*men TOF and that smells like pepper. This not so much. Not a fan of the opening at all, but the dry down is decent. Can't say I'm a fan, but it is different in an odd way.

Funny how different noses perceive fragrances. To me it's a pepper explosion from the outset which mellows into a powdery pepper scent.

I think it's because of the Iso E super in Bang. I get a slightly sweet woody note and my wife said it smells like black licorice which I also get. Then again some people smell nothing which has happened to me with Molecule 01. I'm thinking that the more I wear it, there will be times where I don't smell the Iso E Super and instead get nothing but the pepper notes.

    Hi laroche -

Thank you...yes, it is actually brilliant as a "base" for nice fragrant citrus. I left out bergamot because of the very broad range of bergamot "flavoring" in scents. It can be presented in a myriad of ways. Some citrus scents I have with grapefruit and/or lemon and a crisp bergamot do just fine with Bang...

I, too, like it alone - but is one of the few scents that I immediately tried layering with citrus compositions to deepen the base. I've had wonderful success.

A specific scent that works well is a niche-quality Eau de Cologne from the Gandini 1896 line - Grapefruit and Citrus. The scent pyramid of that is:

Top notes: grapefruit, tangerine, bergamot and lemon.
Heart: jasmine, lavender, rosemary and star anise.
Base: musk, vetiver and ambrette seed.

A vibrant top with a nice display of grapefruit, but a blend of the other citruses that shows well. Just a few shots of Bang as a base layer underneath and both scents come together wonderfully.

    Cheers,

    ericrico
