Default Need Help: Good Book About Fragrances

I've never found a good book about fragrances. I have that guide/catalogue by I donīt remember who, and I read the book about Jardin sur le Nil. But these are not the books I need. I need a book that tells the history of perfumery, explains the olfactory families and the classics in each one of the families, a book that talks a little bit about how to create a perfume and a book that talks about how the taste for fragrances evolved over time.

Is there such a book available on the Market?

This might be one to take a look at. It hasn't come out. Will be released soon: The Perfume Lover: A Personal History of Scent by Denyse Beaulieu

I have found the Roja Dove book Essence of Perfume a good general intro:
    http://www.amazon.com/Essence-Perfum.../dp/1907317015
(I remember buying it in a local bookstore for much less than $60, though)

It does talk a lot about history, families, and key historical frags in each family; it doesn't talk about creating perfumes. It is rather general, though, and the part where he describes some key frags is nowhere near as good as the Turin Sanchez book. But at least it provides a starting point before one can then move to the more detailed Turin/Sanchez list.

I have a large, illustrated book on the history of fragrance called Perfume: Joy, Obsession, Scandal, Sin by Richard Stamelman, but it may be more history than you want to read. See: http://www.amazon.com/Perfume-Scanda...3642850&sr=1-4

These charts may help-- they show the geneology of fragrances:

l read this book last year, & enjoyed it immensely, but l'm not sure it's what you're looking for. lt's an autobiographical account of the creation of a bespoke perfume for Denyse by Bertrand Duchaufour. This perfume has now been released as Seville a l'Aube by L'Artisan. lt is a very "personal" account indeed.

l have heard a lot of good things about Essence & Alchemy by Mandy Aftel; l think this one may contain more of the information you need.
"What is this secret connection between the soul, and sea, clouds and perfumes? The soul itself appears to be sea, cloud and perfume..." - from Zorba the Greek by Nikos Kazantzakis.

I went on Amazon (UK), typed in "Perfumery" and came up with, amongst others,

"Introduction to Perfumery" by Tony Curtis and David Williams.

"Perfumery-Practice & Principles" by Calkin & Jellinek (very expensive)

"The Science & Art of Perfumery" by Sagaran

"Priciples & Practice of Perfumery and Cosmetics" by Howard & Arnould Taylor

I have only seen the first two, and can recommend them both.

Hi DanielPlainview! I agree with all that Teardrop has said. I have somehow ended up with two copies of Mandy Aftel's Essence and Alchemy. It would be my pleasure to send one of them to you. You can PM me if you would like it.

    Here are another couple of Recs;
Le Snob. Perfume. by Daruish Alavi. Based a lot on the authors personal opinion but great fun and choc full of interesting stuff and little interviews with Perfumers.
Perfume. The Alchemy of Scent by Jean-Claude Ellena.

If you read French, then Roudnitska's Le Parfum is instructive.
(The book is out of print, but used copies can still be had).

Of course G. Tsk Tsk to me. I meant to say to DanielPlainview that the books that I suggested are in English. If he has other languages he will have a much wider choice!!

Oh and DP. I think that Luca Turin and Tanya Sanchez Guide is great. Entertaining, stimultating and informative. You don't have to agree with it all, just read it and sniff!
