    Default Wanting to explore saffron.

As thread topic goes, never really had any saffron predominate fragrances. Would like to go to luckyscent and order a few samples. Any suggestions?

Cuir de Lancôme also has a good dose of saffron.

Another for the L'Artisan mentioned above and also Godolphin by Parfums de Marly

Xerjoff- Gao. This one's an abject lesson in the use of Saffron in a fragrance.

Seconding Safran Troublant as most saffrony.

Tom of Finland also has a certain saffrony note (via safraleine, I suppose) above the leather. Also. Byzantium saffron by Merchant of Venice, though I think this Italian brand is not available in the US.

+1 Amouage Asrar. Incredibly opulent and remarkably still available at Universal.

So this is a note I'm not sure I understand fully... I feel like it has a sort of powdery milky soft warm fluffy feeling, in a baby yellow color... and I don't know if scents like say Tauer's Rose de Kandahar actually have saffron or not, but it just feels like it does. There are ones like Kilians Incense Oud, which is incense and oud obviously, but the saffron gives it a soft warmth, etc... I almost picture it like an orange blossom type of feeling. Now I think I also know it as a spice accent, something that softens and rounds things out, like maybe Al Oudh (L'Artisan), or one of those Frapins I think, but it's an addition...

and then, I know Black Saffron, in name, but all I smell is fruity watery leather, nothing of the type of saffron I know from the above.... But I don't get how this is saffron in any way. Is it a different type/style/kind, or just a naming misdirection?

Most of the time I am very proud of the Basenotes community. Time after time I have witnessed the thoughtfulness, empathy & genuine friendship that members of this community extend to others - oldtimers & newcomers alike. There are other times, however, when egos get the upper hand and civility goes out the window. My philosophy is that I won't say anything here that I would not say if you were standing in front of me. Welcome to Basenotes, each and every one of us. ~ TwoRoads

Others have made some excellent suggestions here. I would add one more that is rose dominant, but has a beautiful saffron note that is cast in a supporting role:

    Tom Ford - Cafe Rose

Midnight Oud by Juliette Has a Gun should be called Midnight Safran.

Don't waste time with Black Saffron, it smells no saffron at all. However several scents contain this note but personally I can't think of any which features it among the prominent ones.
    My current top five:

    Guerlain - Homme Intense
    Angela Ciampagna - Liquo
    Charenton Macerations - Christoper Street
    Dior - Fahrenheit Absolute
    Azzaro - Pour Homme (vintage)

I like Black Saffron - its worth a try - it gives that warm spicy feel. Also - Jo Malone Saffron Cologne Intense! Lovely. Both unisex.

The note of saffron is often connected to oudh (Montale, Mancera, Memo, Cale', Neela Vermeire, Histoires de Parfums etc), I detect also the presence of Saffron in several O'driu' scent for instance or Oriza L.Legrand (Chypre Mouse for instance).

Of what I know Divine - L'Homme Sage is about the best saffron-predominant and I'd add Al Haramain - Red Jafran, an attar, too.

Edit: Must add Lubin - Idole and Decenniel - Bois Bourbon.

p.s. By definition predominant would mean the dominant or controlling note/accord... I, as well as some others I think, are providing suggestions where it might not be the dominating note, but surely is among the top notes/accords noticeable in the scent. That said, it's all about saffron with the Red Jafran.

If you want to explore saffron and don't want to spend a lot, check out Versace Man (the one in the purple bottle...not Eau Fraiche or Homme). You can find a good deal online, and it is a pretty safe blind buy.

I'd suggest two fragrances that are both good and really inexpensive:

    * Davidoff Silver Shadow
    * Ted Lapidus Pour Homme Black Extreme

They both have a very noticeable Saffron note that, to me, is very enjoyable.

    Regards.

Another vote for MFK Oud (original). The saffron really shines through in a comforting / cozy and chromatic sense as well. Interesting to see how many scents combine saffron and oud. Also interesting to see Silver Shadow mentioned. Another MFK creation if I'm not mistaken - albeit at the other end of the price spectrum!

Always fascinating to notice the trajectory and development in a perfumiers career.

    Hey there Antagonist!

L'Artisan's Safran Troublant, and ELDO's Tom of Finland: I own full bottles of, and I can heartily recommend them as excellent representations of saffron. Especially ST.

Atelier Cologne's Santal Carmin, which also has a great saffron note, bother lighter and spicier than ST/Tom.

Lubin's Korrigan: Excellent animalic/boozy perfume with a prominent saffron note that lasts about 2 hours. I'd recommend you try this.

Jo Malone's Saffron Cologne Intense: Didn't leave a strong impression on me but it's a decent saffron.

I haven't tried the Aramis & Byredo, and I don't think the saffron in TF Noir de Noir is prominent enough to merit exploration.

L'Artisan Parfumeur Safran Troublant has the most realistic and natural smelling saffron note to my nose.

Other beautiful saffron scents imo are: Parfumerie Generale Felanilla and Grossmith Saffron Rose. I also get a gorgeous saffron note from Montale White Aoud, but sometimes it is hidden behind the aoud note.

Alright, so I've put through the order on luckyscent for the following samples: Xerjoff Gao, CDG 888, Oriza Chypre Mousse, and the L'Artisan. Hope I like them! Thanks everyone.

I already own MFK Oud, Montale Dark Oud, and Tom Ford Oud Wood. Was testing all three side by side to try to detect it.
