Default Article in Allure: "The best scents under $60"

I have read Allure magazine since it began about 20-25 years ago. It is a beauty/fashion magazine, blessedly without any "How to get a guy!" articles, and they have always covered fragrances. This month they had an interesting article about the best cheap fragrances (mostly female, one male), as chosen by several industry insiders: Kurkdjian, Chandler Burr, Dawn Goldman, and Marypierre Julien. Here is their list:

    Britney Spears Midnight Fantasy
    Jovan Musk
    Gloria Vanderbilt Vanderbilt
Bath & Body Works Forever Red
    Tommy Hilfiger Freedom (on women)
    Kate Walsh Boyfriend
    Estee Lauder Youth-Dew
    Nina Ricci L'Air du Temps
    Gorilla Perfume Icon
    CK One

    Thoughts?

Fully agree on Youth Dew (and other Estee Lauders, like Azuree, which can also be still found for $40). And yes also to Lush in general (though they are only 30ml). As for the others ...

Chandler Burr's a schizo (or simply a tool). I wouldn't trust his judgement on anything...

Just read his archive of reviews for a start. But what I can say is that he has never been influential in my developing knowledge of fragrances and perfumery in general.

I really can't remember but he reviewed for a couple of websites, one being the New Yorker. Here's an example, where he awarded Dior Homme Sport 4/5 (yes, that Dior Homme):

I actually kinda liked DHS when I tried it - not 4/5 like, but something around 3.5/5 seems reasonable to me. Especially if you compare DHS to pretty much anything else with Sport in the name, I think.

And Chandler Burr has pulled this stunt once too many times in the past, hence why I can't take him seriously. Credentials?! They mean jack to me, based on such a***-licking reviews.

Quite orientative and informative, yet by far not exhaustive list of good frags within/below this price bracket.

I have found that most magazine features on fragrance are merely advertisements, which includes the "new" items of fragrance.

Usually, they are. This was the first one I have seen in awhile that wasn't.

I will never forget Burr's review of YSL M7 : "it's an horrible scent, smells like a car crash just happened in a motorway."
Anyway, there are a lot of great perfumes under 60 dollars, have you checked for the old, discontinued ones, in the bargain bin?

There are many great scents for less than $60 so these 'industry insiders' are probably out of the loop. Seasoned Basenoters are not the intended audience of this article either.

Ah, Chandler Burr? He may be witty and entertaining but his views are just as personal as ours so why put more stock into his? Didn't he describe (in his book) Frederic Malle French Lover/Bois d'Orage as some white European guy's unwashed crotch?

Errr... Maybe it's because he's making a (lucrative) living out of it?

See the article here --> http://www.nytimes.com/2006/12/03/st...cent.html?_r=0

The exact quote goes, "Smoke fills many perfumes. Some are misfires; Yves Saint Laurent’s M7 might do better if it didn’t smell like a Renault engine in flames: burned rubber, seared chrome, frying polyethylene. It was as alarming as a flashing red light."
