Default how to decant a perfume bottle ?

So I have a bottle of Avignon that I need to decant into 5 10ml pieces. As it happens, the top doesn't come off, it doesn't unscrew so I need to work with that.

My option is to spray 10ml directly in the bottle. I've seen the salepersons at Sephora doing this when you ask for a sample [ they spray into a 2ml vial directly from the tester ] and tried it at home with great accuracy. As long as you know where the 10ml mark is you'll be ok with almost no loss of liquid.

Question is: is this ok? Do you change anything about the perfume by spraying? I can't see why this would be the case...but who knows.

    Any tips and tricks appreciated!

    Thank you

Just spray directly into the decant, you can use a plastic funnel so you don't waste any.

Also, try to press the sprayer with less speed, so that the juice is not turned into a mist and remains in liquid form.

I've been meaning to try that method. Definitely a good idea to practice on some cheapies until you get the hang of it. I've heard stories about people piercing the plastic tube that attaches to the atomizer with the syringe, thus ruining their fragrance.

As a side note; is a plastic funnel alright? Can it be washed and re-used for another perfume afterwards?

I wonder because some say that a metal funnel is the only way to go but I can't get one. Any feedback on this?

good advice. funnels make it harder to spray into the vial.

Ok. I'll try not to use a funnel. I think I'll stick with the spraying directly in the smaller bottle, trying to spray slowly. I wonder how much liquid can I expect to lose through mist? Is it considerable?

    Here's a crazy idea:

If you don't care about the bottle, can't you drill a small hole at the top [ I mean, the bottle is not under pressure so it won't explode or anything ] and just pour the liquid from there directly? HA! I can't see myself doing this but hey )

Guys! today i experimented with the method and found a new way to extract liquid! Should I make a video? I think it's the ultimate method and I see no problem using it on any bottles.

I use the "slow squirt method". Decanting is a drag, anyhow.

Interesting - concept is a bit like a homemade Travalo. I might try it one day. Thanks!

Actually that was my inspiration! And it seems to be working greatly, if you risk to use travalo, you can try with a syringe.

If i ever fuck up a bottle I'll let you know. hope not though

That's the thing - I've seen people fill and use the Travalo but never got one myself because I think I once destroyed a spray by pulling off the top (no idea if that was what really caused it, but the spray didn't work after I put it back, and I never tried it again). That, as well as the fact that Travalos are not cheap. But I may be tempted to try the syringe if I find a frag I can afford to lose.

My mother has a near full 200ml No 5 with a sprayer that doesn't work very well, some feeble droplets only. I was thinking of using the syringe method of relocating the juice but now I'm thinking that that method relies on the sprayer actually working well. Any suggestions most appreciated. Mum says just break the bottle!

    Melvournis decapitate the top.

Remove the the sprayer mechanism by pulling it off.

Will inform if it was successfull...

    Sicktrick, good trick.

However, cutting the needles in half may result in an injury. Looks like you were using a long 21 gauge green needle. It might be a good idea to find some short 23 gauge blue needles. They are a bit thinner than the green, but only 16mm in length. Ideal would be a nice, fat 18 gauge, but I don't think those come in the shorter lengths.

Yes, Hedonist, I have taken the sprayer off, but then what? I'm not quite sure what you mean by 'decapitate'. Is it like cutting the neck of a champagne bottle with a knife as seen in the movies?

Hello, this is my first post on basenotes. I have been lurking for a while and finally signed up on on March 22nd. I am interested in this topic and I have been reading about it online for a few months and watched some videos. I did here today on funnels because during my "research" somewhere along the line I read that metal funnels were not a good thing. I don't remember why "they" said they were bad. I understand if you are decanting for others that plastic would be best (if you are decanting for others, for one decant or several of the same fragrance and then throw away)<< so you do not cross/contaminate fragrances. However if you are decanting for yourself (and just the amount you need for a short time) and want to decant later with the same fragrance is a metal funnel actually bad for the perfume in any way. Does it change something, create a reaction, mess with the fragrance? I have funnels that have come with perfumes (long long ago from the 1970/80s, I know they were intended for using with that frag, so to transfer into vanity display perfume bottles, some metal some plastic, of course I wash them and know which Frag that came with. I would love to hear if anyone knows if metal, cheep or say silver as I have silver, copper, stainless that came with a purchase is somehow effecting my perfume in some way. Back to the thread here, I have read and watched some tips on online. One tip is to use little plastic cups (purchased for decanting) or using small measuring cups and spray the perfume in these then with the use of a funnel (or if the measuring cup spout is small enough) pour into your bottles, vials etc. Of course again the question of being able to use a metal measuring cup comes up. These measuring cups would have to be used for perfumes only and if you use plastic, we all know the scent lingers. But the tip was about perfumes that have a wipe spray and how if you are trying to spray right into your sample or smaller decanter--- you have a lot in over spray and if you use the cup it captures most of the liquid and transfer is cleaner. People complain about getting the perfumes all over their hands and smell forever, using medical plastic throw away gloves helps (the gloves own thought, I haven't seen it suggested in what I have read, but I am sure the suggestion is out there somewhere). I am soon going to purchase some bottles/vials and other accessories from a site that was suggested on a youtube video I have watched (I am sure that many people here already know about these sights and videos) I am going to try a kit that comes with a little of everything and decide what I like and purchase more. I am VERY new to all of this and have only collected a hand full of perfumes. Thanks for taking the time to read!
