Default Recommend Me Some Better Fragrances!

Hey, Im new to BN, but I've been lurking for a bit and finally decided to make an account.
I'm 16 and in high school. I've been wanting to get into higher quality fragrances. All I own at the moment are cheapies and aquatics: Perry Ellis 360 Red, Cool Water, Nautica Voyage, Polo Blue, and Paris Hilton for men.Planning to get Cuba Gold as a cheap cold weather fragrance for now. As you can tell I'm into fresher fragrances, but Im willing to try some different kinds.
I'd appreciate it if you guys recommended me some better quality fragrances that's not . For all year around and for cooler weather. Also Looking for a nice vanilla scent thats not too strong or powdery.

    Im already considering in order:

    Allure Homme Sport
    Dior Homme
    Fahrenheit(Aqua?)
    YSL L'Homme
    Boss Bottled
    Platnum Egoiste
    Rive Gauche
    Live Jazz
    John Varvatos

Please let me know if these are suitable for a high schooler and recommend me better and/or cheaper alternatives to the scents I listed!

    Thanks!

Whay don't you add Eau de Baux to the list? Read the reviews about it, it is a very good one and fits your desires.

    First off, welcome to basenotes!

Now, what I have from that list is full bottles of Fahrenheit and L'Homme(Both are decent for high school. Maybe Fahrenheit not so much, but I don't care I wear it anyways.). But, from your list I also have acquired samples of Dior Homme, Allure Homme Sport, and Platinum Egoiste, and I plan on purchasing all of these in full bottles fairly soon. I think these are very suitable for a high school setting.

As far as a good vanilla I would say +1 for Eau de Baux. I havent smelled it but everyone on basenotes says it is supposed to be good and it is not that expensive either.

I am in high school myself, and what I can recommend from my collection (including samples) would be:
Bvlgari Black. It has a rubber note in it that I am quite fond of, but I also get a great vanilla note in the drydown that I find amazing!
YSL La Nuit de L'Homme I have a full bottle of this, but I think I slightly prefer L'Homme. I find both very good and I also am a fan of Libre from their line, but not as much as either La Nuit or L'Homme.
Dior Homme Sport is very good, I have not gotten my hands on Dior Homme Intense but that is supposed to be amazing.
Bleu de Chanel is another great scent for high school. (I don't know if there is some conspiracy going on here but every time I have had an SA at Sephoras talk about this they all say that is there favorite fragrance on a guy, so that is a plus! )
Acqua di Gio is a great high school scent if you don't mind being unoriginal, which a lot of people on these forums have a problem with, but I don't. I get lots of compliments on it which is a huge plus for me as well. (Note: A lot of people say Perry Elis 360 Red smells very similar to Acqua di Gio so sample before you buy for sure)
Gucci Pour Homme II is another great scent that is not to heavy to be used in high school. I plan on buying myself a bottle fairly soon.
Le Male by JPG This one is pretty floral and some consider it feminine, I don't personally find it to be feminine, just go easy with the sprays and you will be fine! (Cuba Gold is supposed to be a cheaper clone of this, I haven't gotten my nose on that one, but again smell them to see which one you like more first.)

For cheaper scents what I can recommend is:
Chrome Legend is one that I own a full bottle of. I bought it when I first started collecting before I knew what I was doing. And as a plus it is fairly cheap.
Kenneth Cole Black is another one that I bought fairly early on, and it is a pretty underrated fragrance in my personal opinion. Also fits the high school age scent category fairly well and does not break the bank.
Make sure if you are buying cheaper scents to keep in mind you get what you pay for. It is probably better to save your money and buy 1 more expensive but quality scent than 3 or 4 cheaper scents just because they are cheap.

(One final note, those fragrances are all pretty fresh, but you should smell around and see what you like. Never take opinions from basenotes as a final opinion, because everyone has different tastes. I would recommend sampling, then reading the reviews and look at the notes on basenotes to understand better what you are actually smelling and learn what notes you like and what ones you don't.)

The only ones from your list I tested and didn't like were both Boss Bottled and John Varvatos. I wasn't overly impressed with either, but once again, I recommend you sample them first and then make your own decisions.

Sephoras will stock most of these scents and they give 3 free samples per visit usually. Nordstroms usually has a decent selection and the last time I went there they didn't seem to care how many samples I took (I had just bought a fragrance though) so I grabbed 4 from their selection I was interested in, but I think they would have given me more without hesitation.

    Hope this helped!

Can't help on your first question as neither are to my tastes. On the latter question Rochas Man for sure.

For a 16 yr old spending their parents $$$, go get a 3 pk Axe spray from your corner store.

No way! This stuff is really horrible.
Many young people do earn some money and even if not, there are occasions like birthday or xmas .....

    I like this cat.

    Here's my two cents:

Allure Homme Sport - yes, if you like it
Dior Homme - best on this list, probably high in the running on any list you could make, might be too mature, might not, try it
Fahrenheit(Aqua?) - no and no, too mature
YSL L'Homme - yes, it's versatile and a crowd pleaser
Boss Bottled - I'll be honest, I don't remember what the hell it smells like
Platnum Egoiste - yes, but I hear it smells like A&F Fierce, which I also understand lots of HS kids rock. You don't wanna be the haystack, you want to be the needle. Still yes.
    Rive Gauche - too mature
    Live Jazz - maybe
    John Varvatos - too mature
    Rochas Man - yes

And yeah, Eau de Baux might be up your alley. Also maybe check out:

Gucci Guilty Intense - under-rated, not bad
Prada Amber PH - so fresh and so clean
Bleu de Chanel - nice frag, versatile and a crowd pleaser
Versace Eros - gets hated on here, if you like fresh and vanilla, maybe check it out

Allure Homme Sport - that's it!
    Dior Homme - no
    Fahrenheit(Aqua?) - no
    YSL L'Homme - why not?
    Boss Bottled - maybe
Platinum Egoiste - of course no, considering u'r 16
Rive Gauche - come oooon, way too mature
Live Jazz - i can't be fair with this one since i dislike it coz of rhubarb
John Varvatos - can't remember it well
    Rochas Man - maybe

    and some additions :

    versace pour homme

    adg essenza
