Default How many truly 'Great' Designer scents do you think there are?

I, like a lot of other people when starting this hobby, got carried away in the beginning and bought a huge amount of bottles. In 6 months, I guess I have bought around 55 full bottles of designer frags. I have sold a lot of these and my Designer collection now stands at 34 and there are none in that 34 that I rate less than 8/10 or that I wish to sell, but in terms of being 'Great' there aren't that many in my own opinion. I have tried probably 200 other designer frags in the past 6 months and there are none that I rate higher than what I have bought.

I have lots of frags that I consider very very good, such as Mugler Cologne, Prada Amber, Bergamotto Marino, Jaipur Homme, Midnight in Paris, Burberry London, but the only designer Frags that I would class as truly 'Great' (in my subjective opinion) are...............

    Fahrenheit
    Rive Gauche
    Dior Homme/DHI
    Gucci Pour Homme II

Ya, I agree. Way too many to list. You have several in your Top 10.

Quite a few I am familiar with, probably having tested so far, but not just tested, also being able to almost vouch for clearly liking those particular designer scents: anywhere between a few tens and even a few hundreds (speaking strictly based on my own experience and from my own perspective).

    People saying too many...... Really????

    I said 'Truly Great'

How many truly great footballers have there ever been? How many truly great heavyweight World champions have there ever been?

By definition how can something be truly great if it is just 'one of many'

Way too many to list. I think that a lot of folks are thinking of current designer releases (and current formulations of older designer fragrances that smell completely different) and missing most of the good stuff from the past.
    Current Top Favorites:
    1) Portrait of a Lady (EdP Frédéric Malle)
    2) Giorgio for Men vintage (Giorgio Beverly Hills)
    3) Dia Man vintage edt (Amouage)
    4) Les Nombres d'Or Vetyver (Mona di Orio) - tie
    4) Lalfeorosa (O'driù) - tie

    6) Anat Fritz Original Formula and Classical (Anat Fritz)
    7) Captain vintage (Molyneux)
    8) Tzora (Anat Fritz)

IMO, yes. Chanel, Dior, YSL, Guerlain, Gucci, Hermes, Burberry etc. etc. are all designer houses that have created several amazing fragrances over the years, even disregarding the exclusive collections.

Too many to say, but one of very understated and under rated ones that I truely LOVE is Givenchy Xeryus Rouge.

    TDH
    Pure Havane
    Pure Malt

Depends on what the word great means.

The original meaning of the word great is massive, groundbreaking, fit for a king etc.

Modern slang has weakened the meaning of it, so that basically anything that's very good is great.

But I would say there are less than 20 great designers.

    Stop whining.

There are about 100 or so truly great designer fragrances. Probably more, because I haven't sampled exactly everything.

PS: Why are you talking about footballers and heavyweight champions ?
Seeking: Bottles/decants : of Feeling Man, Gucci pour Homme, Essence of John Galliano, Nicole Miller (vintage), Opium pour Homme, Oxford & Cambridge...etc.

Seeking decant/sample of Jil Sander Feeling Man, Cacharel Nemo, Bijan for Men EDC, Lanvin for Men, Giorgio VIP, Il Lancetti and other old school frags ....etc. I have samples to swap.

I don't think this analogy holds up.
It is one thing to say Pele, Maradona, Messi, Best and a few others who can basically be agreed on by most serious football fans, but for you to suggest for example that Gucci Pour Homme 2 is better than, say, Egoiste or Kouros or any number of other "designer" frags is basically pointless.

I'm not whining, so wind your neck in!

I'm talking about Footballers and Heavyweight boxers in relation to the definition of the word 'Great' meaning that 'Great' things do not tend come in large numbers.

Sports aren't entirely subjective - fragrances are subjective. For this reason, there will rarely ever be many truly great athletes at any given sport because we have a tendency to hold athletes to their metrics. Fragrances, on the other hand, have no true metric other than each individual's own experience. As a result, I can see there being a very broad definition of great, resulting in a diverse list of "truly great" fragrances. I tend to feel as if there have been many great one's made in just the last decade. Just imagine how many more come from the 90s and beyond....
    Summer Rotation:

    Versace Pour Homme by Versace
    Cool Water Game by Davidoff
    Tom Ford Grey Vetiver
    H.M. by Hanae Mori
    Vettiveru by Commes Des Garçons
Love & Luck by Ed Hardy
Riverside Drive by Bond No. 9

If smelling good was a crime, I'd be serving a lifetime sentence....

And there is demonstrated the criteria problem.

If I ask you how many truly great people there have been in the world, you might come up with Caesar, Napoleon, St Paul and Ghandi, and I might reply that none had won any major prize fights or football matches.

Yes, I think Fahrenheit is truly great, but I've never been fond of Rive Gauche which I own (bought cheap for $20) nor of Dior Homme nor of Gucci 11 (bought cheap for $25 and have been mystified by all the praise it gets ever since).

So it depends on criteria, is a scent truly great in history, truly great by category (and we have quite a few categorisation systems around), truly great by intended usage (formal/ informal, day/night, season hot/warm/cool/cold, office, romantic, casual), truly great in establishing a new popular style (like Fahrenheit and Joop Homme did), truly great as an expression of masculinity or just truly great on a particular occasion - I remember sitting on a bench on the Thames watching the London Eye going round on a warm sunny afternoon, and the Nautica Classic I was wearing was truly great (but it hasn't been before or since).
    Cheers,
    Renato

I feel this is a good solid point. I have tried to come up with lists of great fragrances, but I honestly can't hold it to less than 100. There are a lot of really great ones out there. It depends what I am seeking and moods...etc.

Spoombung makes a great point as well. People will just list there favorite fragrances. We all have different criteria, needs and expectations.

Renato, I totally agree as well. I have never seen the love of Gucci pour Homme II. That is not to be disrespectful of anyone who really appreciates it. I just find it to be rather blasé and not special. It doesn't have a lot of oomph nor subtle beauty as well. Reminds me a lot of Rochas Desir Homme. Something I may have enjoyed as a young lad, but not now.

PS : apologies for the whining comment ! That was unnecessary by me

I have to concede the point on the 'Great' terminology, fragrances clearly are more subjective than sport

.... and no probs ref the comment ;-)

OK, seem as how nobody else has, I'll name what spring to my mind as real classics, and they are just about all vintage.
Givenchy Gentleman and Monsieur. Chanel Egoiste and Pour Homme, YSL Kouros and Rive Gauche (maybe), Guerlain Mouchoir de Monsieur and Jicky (maybe) and Heritage (maybe). Dior Homme and Eau Sauvage and Gucci Nobile.
There will be more that I am not familiar with..

P.S. I guess you can add Fahrenheit too.

I think I know where you were going with this one Daily, so I'll try to clarify.....

Great = Great sillage, great longevity, great composition, great versatility, a perfume that stands the test of time

A perfume that as a perfumista, you have to admit it is, was, and will-be a masterpiece always....regardless if you like the perfume or not!

If you think Caesar, Einstein, Micky Mantle, or Tom Brady arent great, even if you dont like them, you arent being honest to yourself...

I dont know but maybe there ARE that many great perfumes out there...

What a effect reading this post was, No one can real of one great fragrance many will also consider great?

Gucci Pour Homme 2, I was surprised when i 1st smelt this, beautifully odd is what i got from my 1st sniff.
TF Black Orchid, probably the only scent i would class as my signature.

As others have said, too many to mention. However, most are vintage and there are some that are very similar. For example, Ho Hang Club and Halston Limited. I would always want to have one of these two but I don't know if I need both. I'll worry about that at some future time, if I live that long. LOL. Most of the new designer scents lack depth and more than a few come across as "synthetic" in some way, so I don't have much respect for a lot of them. In still other cases, they are good for an hour or so, if you're lucky, and then you just get a generic or mediocre base. At this point, i would not want to be without Roadster, the new version of Dior Homme, Barolo, and perhaps a couple of others that might get put in the designer category.

There are plenty but many of those still on the shelves are just a shadow of what they once were - Eau Sauvage, Chanel Pour Monsieur being two of the better known 'classics' that have been completely emasculated due to IFRA/EU regulations.

Others have either been reformulated or dropped as they have changed hands - P&G, Coty and a few other companies seem to have done a good job of buying up smaller brands and either cheapening the formulas or just dropping them altogether. That said, if a brand is in relatively good financial shape and has someone with half a clue involved (this excludes Gucci, for instance, where the new Creative Director airbrushed anything made under Tom Ford's stewardship out of the picture) you could still cherry pick some great pieces of work that have held up over time - of course whether you would call them 'great' is another matter. Bulgari The Vert, Cartier Declaration both seem to be okay (?) and they are benchmark works.

Egoiste has suffered (sandalwood gone), M7 seem to have have been altered . . . so many that may once have been 'great' are now 'safe'. I even heard that Terre d'Hermes has been changed - if so probably the regulations on bergamot?
