Default What in Invasion barbare is it that I can't stand?

I always thought it had really dirty strong patchouli in it which I can't stand, but basenotes says it contains:

Grapefruit, Bergamot, Violet leaves, White thyme, Cardamom, Lavender, Ginger, Cedarwood, Bourbon vanilla, Musk

I look at these and I think..... this is right up my alley. Yet the juice makes me want to heave. I've really tried to get into it as it is so well praised, but something in it literally makes me gag.

Is it the musk perhaps? I have other scents with musk. Montale's Musk to Musk is delicious. Is this musk a little.... muskier? Dirtier?

Likely the musk. Musk in niche fragrances can be very harsh and dirty. I can't see how any of the other notes can smell dirty at all. Stronger musks tend to have a mossy, dirty, earty and sometimes animalic smell.

Haven't tried IB personally, so I can't say for sure though.

It's some synthetic dry woody note. It used to grate on me too, and I found it EXTREMELY strong.

Personally no aversion to it whatsoever.

For me it's the powdery drydown but that wasn't something unexpected given the style of frag.

I don't mind the price or the accolades as it really is the 83 Lafite Rothschild of barbershop fragrances with incredible richness and complexity, but a big part why I wear fragrances is for other people to smell them and for 99+% of people, it just smells like the stuff their dad wore, purchased from a drugstore.

Honestly the only screechy note I get for awhile is the lavender. So maybe you don't like lavender. After an hour or so it completely smooths out with the vanilla accord. I certainly have no aversion to it, though the price is annoying.

It's the medicinal lavender. You're not the only one. =( Do not blind buy this one.

For some reason i cant take lavender. L'occitane Eau L'occitan is clearly a nice fragrance, but i cannot wear it at all as the lavender starts becoming irritating.

For me, I think it's the lavendar combined with the musk and "bourbon" vanilla. I can't take lavendar in most fragrances, and the combination with those last two ingredients is what makes it unpleasant to my nose.

I think this parchingly dry note might be it for the OP.

Perhaps it's something chemically like adoxal. IMO, the use of the overdose of this interesting, though harsh and abrasive, synthetic in the middle of a traditional citrus, lavender, vanilla structure is what elevates IB from boring to fascinating niche.

It may be the cardamom. When I first tried it the cardamom was a little hard for me to swallow, but I like it a lot now.

Yeah, I'd have to agree and say it's that dry powdery note. I don't mind it though. I really like the dry down.

You are undeed an unlucky rogue. The note I find repellent in Invasion Barbare is violet leaf. I have not way of knowing if that's what's bothering you. You could sniff some Grey Flannel or Bond Bleecker Street. You'll get a good helping of violet leaf in those two and maybe make the connection to IB.
