Default Amouage sample pass - Men & Women (CONUS)

The house of Amouage is one of my very favorites, so let's share some scents & have some fun! There are four different groups of carded samples to choose from & we'll start with 4 participants in each group. These are powerful scents & a little goes a long way, so a spritz or two should do! Oh, and all are easily unisex, so don't let the "Man" or "Woman" designation deter you from joining in on any particular group.

Please have 50+ posts, be a member prior to 3/1/13 & CONUS only to participate. Enjoy your sniffs, post your thoughts on each & pass to the next person in your group.
Many thanks to Rebecca from The Perfume Shoppe for assisting me in our selections!

I have dipped my toe in Amouage, but I'd love to participate and see what everyone else thinks. Could you please put me in group #1. I have a decant of Lyric but not the others. I'll be out of town from May 11 - the 24th, so put me in whichever position you think would work. Thanks!! I look forward to everyone's reviews!

After your generous Lyric sample and Ubar recommendation, how about Group 4? I'd like to see what their masculine scents are like. Will I be man enough to carry them off??

Looking forward to reading the others' reviews.

Thanks Genie Jeanie. This is some pret-tay classy stuff.

Thanks Genie Jeanie, though my analysis and description of fragrances is a bit amateur I may chime in with some thoughts. I'm a fan of Amouage but saddened to read that they may have fallen foul of the "R" word. Looking forward to everyone's views.

Any thoughts or fun anecdotes you'd care to send our way will be welcomed!

Unfortunately, that "R" word is a harsh reality for a lot of our treasured scents. The only pre-reformulation Amouage I have are a few precious mls each of Ubar & Dia. Though the scents have changed, I still find many of them to be quite complex & above average in quality.

There are still several openings waiting to be filled! With all the talk about Amouage going on over at the Men's Forum, I thought there would be more interest in trying these out.

    Guys? Anyone??

I haven't tried anything except what I assume to be Gold Woman -vial was only labeled Amouage(Glorious! totally whoops Chanel #5 for top place in Uber-Elegant Aldehyde-Floral-Incense.Wow!)
I would like to try some of the other feminines in Group 2 by preference. Please?
Thanks for hosting this sample pass Genie Jenie!

    Thanks, Genie Jeanie!

I've decanted a long vial of pre-2010 Amouage Gold woman and am sending it to SaNielsen today to sample and then add back to the packet of samples to mail along, so Group 1 can compare it with the most-recently-reformulated version.

How generous, 30 Roses! It was a real treat to test your sample in PerfumedLady's aldehydics pass, so I know Group 1 will enjoy comparing both formulations. Thank you!

You've inspired me to provide a pre-reformulation scent as well. Hopefully I can squeak out enough little dabs of my original Ubar to add some to each group. (I see that there's one up for sale again on ebay. *sigh*)

Oh, gosh.....I've been SOOOOOOOO curious about this house. Have not yet tried any but they all sound so sumptuous and extravagant. And the beautiful bottles. Very intriguing.

I'm a little hesitant, given the difficulties I had getting through the KM samples in a timely manner. But maybe if I could be put down as the last person, so that I don't hold things up for everyone else?? I think I'd probably be more into trying the masculines.

The packages will go out Tuesday morning. Thank you to everyone for your support!!

Just wanted to take this chance to pop in and thank our very thoughtful and generous host Genie Jeanie for doing this pass. I don't believe Amouage pass was done before, thought there is plenty of interest in the opulent offerings of this no less opulent house. I can't wait for the fun to begin.

Wonderful!! Thank you for including me. And for the hugs. I'm fine with either Group 3 or 4. If I could be the last participant in the group, that would be great.

EDIT: Ohhhhh.....I just read the Lucky Scent descriptions of the Group 4 Amouages and I'm SO EXCITED to try them!!!!

What a treat for us in Group 4!

Genie Jeanie, are they all as dense as the Lyric Woman sample that I have, i.e. one squirt, and nothing more, for all day?

Hi Schilling! I honestly haven't tried any of the men's group, so you'll have to let me know. That said, all of the Amouage I have tried have been real silage monsters. I hit 3 quick sprays of Epic a couple of days ago just before running out of the house, & nearly choked out anyone within a block of me. I'd say to go easy with all of these or a potential love can turn into disgust very quickly.

BTW, My new bottle of Epic woman is really winning me over! The drydown is just gorgeous & much smoother than I remembered. Still a couple of slots left in Group 2 for anyone curious.

Just wanted to say that smellies arrived safely and I will start sniffing soon. Also, though they weren't part of my group, I have Amouage Gold Man and Gold Woman earlier formulation courtesy of cacio and PerfumedLady respectively. I might share few thoughts on these if you guys don't mind .

Hooray!! I'd hoped everyone would have their samples by now, but tracking shows my local PO was a bit slow getting them to Tampa. Guess the mailman stopped for a little swim on the way.

Please do share your thoughts on the Gold, Whitefluffy! The more input from everyone, the better I say.

There are still a few spots open...any takers??

    Today Memoir Man

Started out as some citrus-y (though citruses not listed) spicy, woody, pleasant something. Not terribly exciting. Once it warmed up I smelled something smoky and bitter - must have been vetiver and wormwood. Just a tad more interesting, but still not terribly exciting. I noticed that the trail which is easy to catch in our very windy neck of the woods, was far more intriguing and promising. And I kind of got a sense what this fragrance was shooting for - something dark, moody, reflective, yet sophisticated. Below is a quote from the Pegasus, a reviewer on Fragrantica:

I like to call Memoir the Black Knight, something I'd imagine a Nazgul would wear while wandering in a dark forest during the night, it's deep, dark, manly, classy, unique and very attractive.

I can see it too, but Memoir doesn't achieve it, IMHO.There are other fragrances that evoke this atmosphere much better, I think - Encens Flamboyant by Annick Goutal and Black Tourmaline by Olivier Durbano.

Overall, not bad, but not worth $$$.

I see no connection between them at all, other than incense and wormwood in both. Maybe they suppose to represent certain darkness, and even if they are, I still fail to see the connection. While Woman is a goddess decked in gold, the Man is some moody aimless wanderer in black. If their paths to cross I seriously doubt they will have much to talk about.

Lyric Man - I loved the initial blast of fresh, watery, spicy, woody rose. But the more it progressed, the more feminine and thoroughly unoriginal it seemed. The dry down was boring musk/woods combo. Lyric's woman counterpart, however much reformulated or watered down is a much more interesting and grand creation. If one is looking for a fresh quality rose on the musk base, one doesn't have to look further than Parfums de Rosine masculine roses which can be had at half the price. They are much more original than this, IMHO. And, to be honest, I was taken aback by the blunt femininity of what supposedly is a masculine fragrance.

Yay, I've received Group Two's package! This is absolutely beautiful, Genie! All these carded samples! I have no idea how you pulled this off but appreciate it so much! You clearly put a lot of effort into not only securing the samples for us but also in grouping them together in a logical way. We are very spoiled samplers, this is just so opulent! Thank you, thank you, many times over!

I am very excited to get started and yes, for our sampling group reunion, too! Too bad our cacio is traveling now. But I'm very happy to see some friends from my very earliest sample pass experiences-bookwyrm and 30R. We have some great experienced sniffers joining with our fantastic newer noses this time. Really special, this is going to be one fabulous thread! Will be a wonderful resource for future BNers, I have no doubts.

Can't believe there are still spots open! As much Amouage talk as the MFD sees, I thought surely a few guys would be open to testing the Amouage feminines. Every scent tried expands one's education, you know!
The nose wants what it wants!

Great, PerfumedLady! I hope you'll find something you like. One spritz of Epic yesterday is still strong enough to be my SOTD for today. I can't complain about price with this kind of longevity! (as well as the good buys online these days)

SaNielsen & sjg3839, please let me know if your packages don't arrive today!

Holy shnikeys! I sprayed Interlude and wow. A powerhouse of dense smokey spice right out of the gate...will come back later with more impressions than just "wow". Lisa

Interlude: I don't think I've ever smelled a fragrance this dense with ingredients! Heady and mind-bending. So powerful that I think I'd rather dab it than spray. It's easy to appreciate the quality here despite feeling hopeless about teasing out notes. Whooo what an opulent, spicy ride!

Wow, these are complex! Decided to further separate group 2's samples into those I already knew and those I never tried at all. Maybe will help me get my head around these!

Starting with those I previously tried:
Ubar-did not like this much on first try but LOVED it from your bottle, Genie! You need to hang onto every drop you have left. Wear it and enjoy it all to yourself, they don't make 'em like this anymore. My first impression of Ubar was just an everything-but-the-kitchen-sink oriental. Loud for the sake of being loud with nothing clear to say. Now I see what was lacking-Genie's bottle has real ambergris. Yes, the whale poop kind and I've always loved its scent. Also present is real, high quality sandalwood. Not to mention the clear as a bell white floral bouquet, with that impossibly beautiful jasmine and the smooth and soft rosewood. Ubar most definitely had a distinct point of view in its vintage form. Your bottle must be a very early one, Genie. What a gem!

Dia- only released in 2002 and already it has changed. But I loved this one before and still do. It still does what it intends-it's an extravagant daytime scent, meant to be an alternative to the even more glam Gold. Original Dia was only ever so slightly less hefty than Gold to my nose, though. Now it's much more airy and less dense. Doesn't seem reformulated so much to me as it seems just thinned out and yes, probably cheapened a bit. Dia remains great, however, and I'd still snag a bottle if I find a good deal. Orange blossom goes through a brief screechy phase, which my older sample didn't do. But those are my only beefs with this re-do. The rest is still gorgeous and still Dia. The aldehydes still lift my heart and the florals still settle into the most delicate, sheer powder. Best part is the aldehydic sparkle that sticks around right through the drydown, sprinkling the perfectly non-sweet incense smoke with fairy dust. Dia is not ruined, even though she's lost some of her curves.

I tried to warn everyone! Could you see yourself wearing Interlude, or is it too over-the top for you?

Isn't the vintage Ubar wonderful?! It's been so long since I've worn it that I forgot how much difference there is between formulations! I bought that back in '97 when I first moved here to Florida, & had absolutely no idea what I was getting myself into. An elderly shop owner convinced me that it was by far the best perfume she had to offer & I must buy it. That's one purchase I will never regret & I'm going to savor every remaining little drop!

Glad to hear that reformulation has not ruined my Dia! My bottle is the ornate 10ml "purse spray" & just about on its last legs. I haven't tried the new one yet, but I'll need to replenish before too long.

You're off to a great start, PerfumedLady!

Vintage Ubar vs newer Ubar was so interesting. The newer one one was sharpish, with pointy edges, but the older one was so smooooth. Newer Ubar is lovely, but high-maintenace. Older Ubar is an effortlessly lovely, self-rescuing princess.

I'm afraid I had to scrub off Lyric after only a tiny spritz-- ? the aldehydic intensity or something.

    Tomorrow Gold new and old...

Genie Jeanie-- I don't know if I could pull off Interlude. That's a BIG fragrance. I'd have to be The Most Interesting Woman In The World. Then again, Ubar was my SOTpeelingthespuds this evening!

    Dia Man

Looking at the list of notes, I am kind of baffled and kind of understand. To my nose it's an old fashioned but very nice cologne style masculine with the chypre-ish vibe. No citruses except bitter orange or oakmoss was found in the list of notes though there are patchouli/woods which probably accounts for the chypre like quality. It is well made and I see connection to the Dia Woman with the nod to classics of bygone era. Too masculine for me to wear but I would be delighted to catch a whiff from a passing gentleman who doesn't conform to anybody's rules but won't be the one to stir some angry pot either. I liked it, but my hubby did not. I have a feeling that he doesn't like anything with a hint of old fashioned .

Whitefluffy -- I love this: "Too masculine for me to wear but I would be delighted to catch a whiff from a passing gentleman who doesn't conform to anybody's rules but won't be the one to stir some angry pot either." I feel the same about many so-called "masculine" fragrances. Would like to sneak up to my spouse and spray him with some things, but since our courting days (when he wore Stetson), he has remained un-fragranced.

He often makes the remark of "old fashioned" as a negative for scents. Maybe his old Auntie was a chypre-woman. Yesterday my son liked the new Ubar, I preferred the vintage one, and my husband was neutral. We all agreed, though, that it wasn't "me". Thinking more about vintage Ubar today, I got a strong honey note from it, as if I were spooning crystalized honey from the jar.

I love Dia Man. It was the first Amouage I tried and it is one of my all-time favorite fragrances. I purchased a bottle last week and it shall be getting to me in a couple of days. It'll be interesting to see if theres any differences between the sample I have, the bottle I'll (hopefully) be receiving soon, and the official sample in the pass.

My final testing was Gold, vintage and newer. Oh, my. I'm afraid it was screechy soap in both iterations. So the winners for me were Interlude and vintage Ubar. Thanks so much for the opportunity to try these-- I don't think I would have had a chance otherwise.

Next up for Group I: 30 Roses.

Yes, this was the first image that popped into my head too - honey. There is actually a white opaque variety that smells very much like that. It made me think that honey must smell of flowers from which it came from, and before smelling vintage Ubar, I never thought of the honey that way!

And RE: old fashioned - I know my husband's mother and couple of his aunties had huge fragrance collections, maybe he was assaulted by a chypre or two as well .

juanderer - Congrats on your purchase! It's a nice one!

Shilling I am ready to ship, need your address!

Will be back later with my thoughts on Ubar.

I can't believe you had the sample of new Dia and didn't even take one drop to compare for yourself! You're a woman of willpower and restraint, Genie! I'd have had to tear into it before sending it off! Anyway, I think you'll be only slightly annoyed by the thinning of Dia at first. I do really think you'll get past it if you use your patience like I did. Once I got used to Dia's weight loss, it honestly didn't bother me at all. Still very much the same scent and still worth owning, IMO.

Yes, to me, Ubar new and old are just entirely different scents! I see SaNielsen is able to recognize more similarities than I could between the two, great sniffin'!

Very interesting thoughts on Dia Man, Whitefluffy and juanderer! I've been so curious about it because of this one sentence from Luca Turin in The Guide: "If your ideal of manly good looks is saturnine and demonic, say Niccolo Paganini or his modern counterpart Tommy Lee Jones, then this is the fragrance for you." Who wouldn't want to try that?! Sounds like some fascinating scent!

I finished with my last sample of those I already knew, which was Memoir. I hope Whitefluffy won't think I'm a cretin but I just can't do this one. I know it gets a lot of love so I have tried multiple times with it. It's just not me. Too dense, too rich, too spicy, too sweet, too everything. Too much. Feels overstated to me, like someone who has to shout about all their fancy possessions. My wearing this scent would be the olfactory equivalent of carrying around gold bars in my purse instead of cash and plastic. I could never pull off Memoir. In sampling it, I get occasional whiffs that are nice and yet I'm unhappy in it. If I have a technical complaint, it's that it seems more oriental in genre than the chypre it claims to be but I'm not convinced it's worth quibbling over the term "chypre" anymore. The perfume houses are obviously still set on using that term, even if not really true. Either way, oriental or chypre, I am uncomfortable in Memoir. However, I insist on smelling it on Whitefluffy in person someday very soon! I have a hunch it will read entirely differently on someone else.

I am the slowpoke of the group! Still have two more to go, the two I am unfamiliar with and have been super curious about. Therefore have been taking my time. But I will finish up early next week, by Tuesday, and get them in the mail. Bookwyrm, I need your addy! Could you PM it at your earliest convenience please?

Great impressions coming through from everyone. If there's at least one scent to love in a small lot of samples, I consider that a success!!

SJG3839 received Group 3 this week & we should be hearing from him soon.

Oh my dearest, PerfumedLady, how could I ever think of you less because you didn't like something I do. I had a hunch you might be struggling with this one, and it's no easy wear for me as well. I found two spritzes to be suffocating, I need to remember to stick to one. I agree with you that it's hardly a conventional chypre, but I could smell the whispers of oakmoss which by itself doesn't make fragrance a chypre, of course. I think I mentioned in the cacio's fruity pass that almost chypres is my favorite genre, pure chypres I can't pull off. I guess I need my chypres to have gold teeth, wear bling and unitards with a cheetah print before they will truly appeal to me . Memoir does this perfectly.

But I knew that it will challenge your perfect sense of taste, and you are absolutely right. As for me, although it's not something I can wear even rarely, it will always have a place in my heart: Memoir is a perfect adventure on that one day when it feels right. It appeals to my romantic side with the images of opulent if a bit over the top oriental palaces, beautiful women decked in gold, tables grunting underneath the weight of exquisite food, music day and night, and brainless excess as far as one can see.
