Wink What made you go for a 200ml or 400ml bottle?

I never did so cos' I'm a beginner.
I am quite attracted to the 30ml bottles as they are pretty handy but more expensive.
    Any experience to share?

I totallly agree with you that as a beginner, buy very slow and small quantities until you are more sure of your taste.

That said, I started out all crazy and even purchased two of the Chanel Exclusif 200ml bottles blind. They were only offered in that size at the time, and I wanted the scents. Fortunately, I loved them But that was somewhat lucky.

Depends on your choice - my preferred choice is always 100ml, very rarely I go for more than that, a few that I did were Fahrenheit / Declaration / Norma Kamali Incense (only 1 size) etc...

That said, I would love a 100ml or more of any Nasomatto / Slumberhouse / Serge Lutens, but they are all 50ml or less...

The couple of bottles I have in those sizes were purchased because they are a favourite scents, and I class myself as a collector.

It depends, I don't have a 'set' way of doing things....one 200ml bottle is unused, and will probably stay that way as I have another, smaller bottle of the same fragrance, while a 250ml bottle I own is in use as it's all I own of that scent. But we're talking two scents here out of a collection of 70+. Buying bottles in these sizes isn't the norm.....!

I have 1 liter (33 oz) of Jean Marie Farina and 4711 each . These are the classic eau de colognes. I have 200ml of Eau Sauvage and 500ml of Hammam Bouquet. Sometimes I feel that hoarding is a good thing, or sometimes the fragrance is so basic and I wear it so often that it becomes viable.

Very rarely go above 100ml -- I get fed up with them and want to try something else.

Back when I was a one-scent-guy, I bought the largest bottle I could find in order to save the most money per ounce/ml. These days, I don't mind buying the smallest bottle I can find. It may cost more per ml, but I'll probably never finish it anyway, which means I saved money by not spending more to buy extra juice I didn't use.

Patchouli Imperial, Leather Oud and Sycomore in 200ml size. These are not cheap fragrances but at this size the cost per ml makes them a steal. Luckily I love all of them and wear them often. Still, it has to be smarter to buy smaller sizes but I just can't do it!

I'll buy the largest spray bottle available. That's why Dior and Chanel are nice.

Reason being if I like it, I want to enjoy it for as long as possible in its current formulation.

For summer selection of EDC type formulations. I splash them on liberally and go through them in one season (sometimes in a matter of weeks). For example, R&G Jean Marie Farina or Hermes Eau D'Orange Verte, etc.

Currently, I have a 200 ml bottle of HermŤs Eau de Pamplemousse Rose, a 250 ml bottle of L'Artisan L'Eau de Jatamansi, and a 500 ml bottle of Comme des GarÁons Vettiveru. In the past I've had (and finished) several 400 ml bottles of HermŤs Eau d'Orange Verte, but don't currently. As you can see, they are all kind of lighter, colognes or cologne-like scents, so I tend to use a lot more. Or that's the thought, at least.

The biggest one I own is LaP Cote d'Amour 250ml. It is light and requires frequent/heavier application, so 250 is not so much if you take that into consideration.

It is always tempting to buy larger bottles (200ml plus) but with a large collection I don't think its wise because part of what makes this hobby interesting is search for the holy grail of fragrances.

Sounds like a lot but I've gone through 200 mls pretty fast on several of them, even at a time when I have owned more than a hundred bottles of everything I wanted. I just used 200 mls of Sycomore over the last couple of years and just bought 200 more.

I try to get the 200 ml (or more) whenever it's available for the scents requiring very generous (and/or frequent) application.
(Orange Verte, Eaux de Cartier, Eau sauvage, Roger & Gallet, 4711,...).

It's a much better value and I know I will use the stuff anyway.

The 2 last big sizes I bought were Mugler Cologne (300 ml for 62 Euros) and Fahrenheit.

    Fahrenheit 100 ml was $72
    Fahrenheit 200 ml was $90

How long do you think it took me to decide which size to go for ?

And considering the juice is lighter now, boy am I glad I got the biiiig bottle !

Even fragrances I love I don't think id ever buy over 100ml, even at 30/50ml it can take a cpl of years to get through a fragrance. In spite of the per/ml savings of higher bottles id sooner prefer to just use the difference between the low and high to just buy a different fragrance.

Think I had about 750ml of Agua Lavanda by Puig once. I decanted it into a huge pump up aerosol bottle to which I gave one pump too many - and it exploded! Think I must have inhaled about 100ml! Quite a buzz as I recall.

Also one gigantic splash bottle of Pour Un Homme de Caron which sadly I Ebayed when feeling skint one time...

I will buy those sizes for one of two reasons: that fragrance is in limited production (e.g., Creed Windsor), or it has such fleeting longevity that it needs frequent re-application (e.g., Chanel Eau de Cologne).
