Default POLL: The War of the Roses (no, not the movie)

I got a few Frederic Malle samples and tried Portrait of a Lady yesterday. I did not like the first 20-30 minutes, it had some sort of synthetic accord to it that I didn't care for. I'm glad I didn't scrub it off, though - after those 30 minutes it turned into a very nice, very rich, very realistic rose. The dry down is deep, dark, masculine - NICE! I was sniffing my arm all day and all evening - just one spray and it was still going into the night. I woke up this morning, still smelling it on my arm... That makes it almost 24 hours in longevity - a rare thing for me. Bravo Mr.Ropion!!

So with that said, I will likely add it to my shopping list. But while thinking about it, I thought I'd have some fun with it and pit it against another powerful rose fragrance - Tom Ford Private Blend: Noir de Noir. NdN is more chocolate-ish, but underneath that it's still a very powerful, dark rose. PoaL definitely reminded me of NdN, even though they are quite different in execution.

    Which one do you prefer?

I've tried many in my life, but my one and only passion is for Hammam Bouquet, the rose. It is a never ending love story. I fall for it every time I wear it. It is a passion that is reborn over and over again. I'm never bored.

Portrait of a Lady easily of the two... I love it from start to finish. Noir de Noir is one of the few rose fragrances that was really not my cup of tea.
    Current Top Favorites:
    1) Portrait of a Lady original formula (EdP Frédéric Malle)
    2) Giorgio for Men vintage/V.I.P. for Men (Giorgio Beverly Hills)
    3) Dia Man vintage edt (Amouage)
    4) Les Nombres d'Or Vetyver (Mona di Orio) - tie
    4) Lalfeorosa (O'driù) - tie

    6) Anat Fritz Original Formula and Classical (Anat Fritz)
    7) Captain vintage (Molyneux)
    8) Tzora (Anat Fritz)
    9) Javanese Patchouli (Zegna) - tie
    9) Monsieur de Givenchy vintage (Givenchy) - tie
    9) Coeur de Vetiver Sacré (L'Artisan) - tie
    9) X for Men (Clive Christian) - tie
    9) Patou pour Homme Privé (Jean Patou) - tie

I have NdN, and it's quite nice. POAL is also pretty nice, and projects like a monster, but neither would get the title of my favorite rose.

Personally, I put all of these above the 2 in the poll:
    Rose d'Arabie
    by Kilian Rose Oud
    Lumiere Noire
    Agarwoud
    Jardin d'Amalfi
    Café Rose

Wow, within just a few minutes 4 votes for "something else"... but only one person posted what that something else is. Anyone else would like to share?

My favorite rose fragrances are Carons: Or et Noir, Parfum Sacre, Delire de Roses.

I also love Serge Lutens Rose de Nuit and Juliette Has a Gun Lady Vengeance.

I can't say from experience, but based on public opinion I'd suggest making Montale an option up there. They make so many (supposedly) amazing rose frags. I'll be able to comment more intimately tomorrow when my bottle of Black Aoud arrives.

I avoided rose fragrances for a couple of decades. Then I found a rose fragrance that topped anything I'd ever tried, Creed Windsor. Since then, I've added quite a few rose fragrances to my wardrobe, and count several of them among my top ten. I own a bottle of Portrait of a Lady, and find it very well done. I also like patchouli, which convinced me to pick up a bottle.

Besides Windsor, the other roses I put ahead of POaL are DC 1913, Amouage Tribute and Montale Black Aoud.

(Only two choices on the poll...what were you thinking?)

My favorites are Black Aoud which is more rose for me and New York Oud which has a prominant plum note. Both are monsters and require a liht hand when spraying. Can't decide which I like more.
    My Favorites

    1. Amouage Epic man
    2. Dior Leather Oud
    3. Perris Monte Carlo Oud Imperial Black
    4. Le Labo Patchouli 24
    5. Amouage Opus VII
    6. Byredo Bullion
    7. Norma Kamali Incense

I'm a big fan of POLA, but I am especially drawn to melancholy aspect of the rose accord in Aramis 900.

While I personally love the genre, my SO does not like anything floral - not just on me, but just in general. That's why I've been consciously staying out of floral scents, rose or otherwise. Quite frankly I love rose and jasmine quite a bit. I'm willing to secretly sneak something into my wardrobe and enjoy it every now and then, when he least expects it. :-)

I love many rose based fragrances around. I would report in here also Iquitos and Mancera Black Intensive Aoud.

I like Noir de Noir a lot, but it reads more woody to me than anything, and therefore less of a true rose.

Although I'm personally not a big fan of the note, I remember trying Juliet Has A Gun's Vengeance Extreme and being quite taken by it. It splits its time equally between patchouli and rose -- so it's not a true solinote either -- but it's quite effective in what it does, and the rose note smells very natural indeed.

Iquitos has a sweet rose in it, but the smell of rubber destroyed the fragrance for me.

Egoiste and Lumiere Noire are my preferences over NdN and PoaL, still have many to experience.

Egoiste - interesting... I've been wearing it for ages (not very regularly) and I love it, though on me it's 90% sandalwood, with a hint of rose and other ingredients. Definitely not as intense rose scent as many others mentioned here, but thanks for reminding me there is a little bit of it in there, hiding behind all that sandalwood. Will have to wear it tomorrow and try to find more of it lurking in the background.

I love rose in fragrance, and in nature more so!
But I can't vote since I haven't tried those you mentioned. I'll give you my favorites:

    Black Oud
    Rose 31
    Lyric men.

I must concur with Hammam Bouquet. A spicy, powdery Victorian rose of great depth. I must also suggest Washington Tremlett Black Tie.

Montale Black Aoud is the rose for me so far, though I'm coming around to Rose 31 (I see it in the same category as Cartier Declaration -- woody, spicy, transparent). I like Noir de Noir before it gets to the end, when I just get cheap (think Nestlé Quik) cocoa powder.
