Default Product Variation & Online Retailers - Not a thread about Creed & Discontinued Fragrances

I think it is commonly accepted here that fragrances will change over time, and that a product you buy online may vary noticeably from its "true" scent (the scent intended by the manufacturer). As a result, common advice on Basenotes is to "only buy from reliable sources." But what does that really mean? Over the years, I have developed reservations about purchasing from discounters like TJMaxx & co., eBay general retail (both used or new), and now I'm wondering about some of my favorite online stores (Scentmonkey, Fragrancenet, FragranceX, etc.). You can't always do a side-by-side analysis, especially for obscure fragrances (those not sold in common retailers). How have you decided what is reliable? How do you know what you're getting until it shows up?

Here's a short list of fragrances have variead noticeably from one bottle to the next:

Escada Magnetism (almost night and day)
    212 Herrera
    Herrera Aqua for Men
    Animale Animale
    Hanae Mori
    Kenzo Jungle Homme
    Fall/Winter Rotation:

    Versace Man by Versace
    Iceberg The Fragrance by Iceberg
    Amber Intense by Prada
    Tom Ford Grey Vetiver
    Burberry London
    Lanvin Avant Garde

If smelling good was a crime, I'd be serving a lifetime sentence....

You have a valid point there. I purchased a bottle of Hanae Mori from fragrancenet a few months ago. Always had good purchases from them, but that particular bottle was not too good. Sent it back. Sometimes it's just a shot in the dark.

I personally don't worry about anything I purchase from Scentmonkey, Fragrancenet, FragranceX, etc. unless they send the wrong item.

imo, discounters may well have the formulations that one already likes (in EEC).

My nose thinks it detects slight differences in almost every scent I buy, but I am nearly positive it's just my imagination. Besides, it's just subtle differences.

I have no problem buying from departments stores or any reputable discounter (which usually means fragrancenet or fragrancex). To date, I don't think I've ever returned a product for smelling "off." Even on Ebay, where I buy a fair number of fragrances, I can't think off the top of my head of more than one time a fragrance smelled markedly different from expected.

I used to order from beauty encounter, but got angry with them for not refunding my full purchase price when I returned a bottle of MI whose serial number had been shaved off.
