Default Amouage Epic Man ingredient question

    Hello all:

Not sure where to put this because it doesn't really fit DIY or fragrance industry, so I'll put it here. Feel free to move if applicable.

I almost depleted my sample of Epic Man today. I might be able to squeeze out one more wear, but now I think I'm going to have to buy this. That cedar and incense drydown is right up my alley.

I was wondering what ingredient gives this fragrance its characteristic smell. I know that a combination of ingredients is ultimately responsible, but something sticks out to me that makes me think that a particular aromachemical is at work here because I have smelled this same stark wood-type scent in several recent releases. What is it? I'm thinking it might be norlimbanol, but I really don't know much about these things and am curious.

    Thanks.

Amouage is high quality so I doubt they add norlimbanol, or at least I don't get it. My guess would be incense, myrrh or patchouli.

    Probably Oud that you're smelling.

It's the Cambodian oud... it's animalic, leathery, dark, woody and smooth...then you have that frankincense note in the background

Thanks very much for your replies. Interesting, I wouldn't have thought of oud, but that's because I haven't smelled much of it (probably only M7 otherwise). If that's it, I really like it in Epic Man. I'll have to explore more of it.

    Thanks again.

Incense and oud combined as the others say.

A brilliant fragrance that is so well blended, for my nose anyway, that I can't pick out individual notes. A recent buy that I have worn only a few times. Top shelf stuff. It has to be the oud and incense.

A friend of me told me that Amouage has "toned down" Epic a bit. Its not as loud as it used to be. Anyone that has some experience?

Amouage is just as synthetic as any other fragrance so why would they not use this chemical?

It could be the oud but since you have smelled it in a few other frags and you have not smelled many ouds then maybe not. Its probably some "fresh wood" chemical that is used a lot these days. Maybe norlimbanol but I dont know what that smells like so cant say for sure. The oud in Epic is not the same as the one used in M7.

I always notice a persistent nutmeg note through Epic Man, particularly during the opening and heart.
Well, it's cheaper than therapy... edit: No it's not...

This. Some really off kilter replies to the original post.

Talking about expensive, rare, or uncommon ingredients isn't going to get there.

Of course but perhaps they use better quality chemicals and that accounts for the differences.

Epic Man is great and I think it's the combo of the oud and dry incense that the OP is looking for. There's no sweetness in Epic, unlike many other ouds maybe that's what's different to the Op's nose.
