Many designer scents use some natural materials, but typically not a large fraction of the final formula. In any case, it depends on the material -patchouli, for instance, is rather inexpensive and so there's no need to use synthetics. Nor of course does it mean that more natural, per se, means better smell.

They all seem to use a combination of both in varying degrees.

Natural substances are not inherently safer than synthetic ones. The basis for the IFRA's imposing restrictions on certain natural scent materials is that they have been shown to cause sensitivity to a portion of the population. (Most of us would rather see warning labels than restrictions, however.)

It doesn't matter if it is synthetic or not. Anything your body absorbs be it natural or synthetic can cause a reaction. The amount that you are actually putting on your skin when using perfume shouldn't cause any noticeable or significant health issues unlessb you already have sensitivities. There are all natural perfume houses out there. Aftelier is one.
I use cloth diapers. I deserve something that smells amazing.

Essential oils can cause more harm than aroma chemicals due to photosensitivity, so the concern is somewhat moot. Most designer scents are constructed from synthetics, but not all. Many niche lines use both also, and some niche lines stick to absolutes. It really has little bearing on the perfume itself; they're just different materials in the palate. Oftentimes, the synthetic is favorable to the natural (as is the case with "replacers." You will, however, find that a great number of commercial, mass-produced/marketed fragrances are all using variants on the same accords, though. The concern really should reside in how well do they work with what they have.

This is quite true, and important to keep in mind. For example, cyanide is a naturally-occuring compound, but it's anything but healthy to consume! Here's a quote from Perfumes: The Guide on this topic:
"There are really very few perfumes you could honestly call all-natural. Of those, we have yet to find any that belong aesthetically in the top tier. Most perfumers believe a judicious mixture of natural and synthetic is the best; very few perfumers we've met believe in 100 percent synthetic fragrance. Furthermore, many perfumes advertised as all-natural are full of synthetic aromachemicals, either because the company is cynical or because it has been lied to by suppliers . . . . But even assuming you find fragrances that are 100 percent natural, there is no guarantee that they will be healthier for you."

This. Niche tends be more natural and designer tends to be more synthetic, but both have a combination of both.

There are many very synthetic perfumes (Lolita Lempicka, Angel, Missoni, Boucheron, Tocade, Black, etc.) that are masterpieces. To answer your question, many designer and niche perfumes make good use of synthetics, though some brands, like Amouage, Chanel, Guerlain, and Tauer, use a lot of naturals.

Don't worry about health issues, some people smoke and live long, which proves the resilience of the body from that poison.

And yes, most fragrances are mostly synthetic, including 'niche'.
    We want a 'Niche' forum.

If you really want to go natural and organic, I think that the only designer brand specializing in this is Aveda. Pureformance isn't bad, an aromatic spicy scent.

    Who knows?

Sometimes I'll smell the most natural note , be it lemons, jasmine or frankincense, and think this cannot be anything other than natural but know very well it could be a very high quality synthetic.

    Who knows?

    for swap/sale:

All fragrances are a mixture of chemicals that smell. Most Fragrances contain a mixture of synthetic aroma chemicals and essential oils and other natural extract . Some ( a few) only contain natural extracts. None (as far as I am aware) contain only synthetics.

Your skin absorbs very little, it has evolved to protect your inside. However it can react to certain materials placed upon it. Many garden plants produce irritating substances, for example Rue and the Euphorbias. There are some chemicals found in Essential Oils and made synthetically which are used in Perfumery that have the potential to cause an allergic reaction in some people (about 1.0-3.0% of the population).

How many more times must we go over this?
