    Default Niche noob sampler pack

I've only really become aware of niche fragrances in the past year or so. I live in an area where my shopping/exposure has always been limited almost entirely to designer fragrances. I've only started to order niche samples online in this past year and recently ordered a sample of Jubilation XXV (it should be here any day now). So for those of you who have been in the fragrance game for awhile now, what would be the top 5 niche samples (only 5!) that every noob collector should try?

These are the top 5 (in no particular order) that I've bought.

    Creed Aventus
    Creed GIT
    Acqua di Parma Colonia
    Amouage Jubilation XXv
    Creed MI

The next ones I would try would probably be a Tom Ford (not sure which one) and Serge Lutens Chergui.

**edit - The top 5 I've listed are only the top 5 most popular (of the ones I'VE bought) that might show up on other's lists. If I were creating my own top 5 list, I wouldn't have included 3 Creeds.

So many things around - 50 is probably more like it. That said:

    1. one Serge Lutens. Chergui could do, or Ambre Sultan, or, if more adventurous, Muscs Koublai Khan
    2. one CDG (modern, synth style). I'd say CDG 2 man
    3. one Chanel exclusive, for instance, the fresh Sycomore
    4. one Malle, for instance, Portrait of lady (masculine rose)
    5. one Etat Libre d'Orange. I love this quirky brand. Je suis un homme if you want to be on the safer side, or Rien if you want to get something stronger

As for Tom Fords, it seems the most cited are usually Tobacco Vanille (as per name) or Noir de Noir (rose and chocolate), though another possibility is Oud wood (to be reissued), which would also help to introduce you to now fashionable oud

Although it is, by no means a comprehensive list, my sample pack would have to include:

    Serge Lutens: Santal Majuscule

Juliette has a Gun: Midnight Oud

    Chanel Exclusifs: Coromandel

    Dyptique: Vetyverio

Guerlain: Heritage (as some would agree Guerlain is niche)

If I could choose a niche sample pack according to my tastes- for reasons of simplicity I'd keep the 5 samples formula, it would most likely have to include:

    2-3 samples of designer exclusives
1 sample of Knize Ten Golden Edition
1 sample of Creed Vintage Tabarome

Id recommend some of the best from a few categories. These should give you a good reference when other people talk about certain notes/perfumes.

by Kilian Back to Black.......good cherry pipe tobacco
    Montale Black Oud.............good oud/rose
Histories de Parfums Ambre 114.....reference amber
Guerlain Vetiver........one of the best vetivers
    Montale Full Incense.......really good incense

by Kilian - Back to Black (Sweet tobacco. Very masculine but sweet. Good for nightout.)
Montale - Black Aoud (Basic Rose-Oud combination. There're plenty of this combination going in niches. Montale did a good job on it. Balancing quality and price wonderfully)
Heeley - Sel Marin (Niche aquatic. To study how niche do aquatics. There're many out there that's different, but I recommend this.)
Amouage - Jubilation XXV (Masculine sweetness, date-type/cqb scent.)
Tauer Perfumes - L'Air du Desert Marocain (Deep in niche. If you like this then there is no return.)

    Honorable mention :
Creed - Green Irish Tweed (Davidoff - Cool Water on steriods.)
Creed - Aventus (Smokey pineapple. Many people love it but I hate it though.)
A Lab on Fire - Almost Transparent Blue (My everyday fragrance. Fresh and unique.)
Diptyque - Philosykos (Best fig scent imo. Very clean and smells great.)
Diptyque - Eau Duelle (Sweet vanilla but unisex.)
Diptyque - Tam Dao (Best sandalwood scent imo.)
Amouage - Interlude Man ("Chalenging scent". Love or hate, you decide.)
Imaginary Authors - Memoirs of a Tresspasser (Boozy vanilla, if you're into it.)
Atelier Cologne - Oolang Infini (Tea scent. sweetened. lovely.)

and many others I haven't mentioned. Just randomly type out what I thought of.

As Tristanjester mentioned earlier, I think I was looking for the masterpieces of some of the larger niche houses. As such, if I had to do it over again, my 5 niche that I'd start off with would be..

    Creed GIT
    Amouage Jubilation xxv
    Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille
    Tauer L'air du Desert Marocain
    LIDGE

I got my 2 vials of Amouage Jubilation XXV in the mail today and have tried it on my skin twice. As it's not an official vial/sample (ordered from lucky scent), then maybe it's not up to its normal quality. Until then, it's removed from my sampler pack. I wasn't impressed.

I'd forgotten that I'd also ordered a vial of Serge Lutens Chergui too and was surprised when I opened the package at work! The vial smells great, but I haven't tried it on my skin yet. I wanted to give it a chance on its own, so I'll save it until tomorrow.

I have never had any issue with the quality of luckyscent's samples, myself. However, I do find that the way the fragrance progresses when being dabbed on from a vial can be very different from how it progresses when sprayed in a diffused mist over a larger area of skin. Sometimes I put my non-spray vial samples into small spray vials to try to approximate what a spray from a full bottle would smell like.

It's almost impossible to pick just five suggestions! So I'll just go with my favorite houses.

Serge Lutens : Chergui or Muscs Koublai Khan
Frederic Malle : Vetiver Extraordinaire or Geranium Pour Monsieur
Le Labo : Patchouli 24 or Vetiver 46 (note that Patchouli 24 is not patchouli, it's birch tar and vanilla, and Vetiver 46 is incense, not vetiver, it's a Le Labo thing)
L'Artisan Parfumeur : Timbuktu or Al Oudh
Chanel Exclusifs (I am declaring this a niche) Cuir de Russie or Sycomore
Behemoth cut a slice of pineapple, salted it, peppered it, ate it, and then tossed off a second glass of alcohol so dashingly that everyone applauded.

Zatarain - Excellent suggestion! I've got a couple empty atomizers, and I'll be filling one immediately. Thanks.

Whatever you fancy if and only iff it is not widely discussed in Base Notes: no Creeds, no Amouages, no Bonds, no Mona Di Orio, no O'Drieu, no Arquiste, no exclusive Guerlains... now, beware: you don't want to fall into hipsterisms.

Jokes aside, Zatarain suggestions are the way to go, IMHO. I'd add some by MP&G Santal Noble, Route de Vetiver and Parfum D'Habit, es per comments here in BaseNotes.

    Montale Black Aoud
Le Labo Rose 31 or Patchouli 24
    Comme des Garcons Avignon
Serge Lutens Arabie (for the Lutens rich, syrupy stewed fruits aesthetic brought to its logical conclusion)
    Frederic Malle Carnal Flower

Its not just the sample quality UnclePecos, I wasn't real impressed with Jubilation 25 either. It was tough for me to smell, like it was there then it wasn't. Ive heard a few people mention this. And this is the reason we sample and not blind buy. Good luck.

The longevity and the projection of the sample was horrible yesterday, but I'll try it again tomorrow. Because it was so weak, it was difficult to say definitively one way or the other and for me to see how the scent developed. All I really got was an ashtray note combined with something else which seemed familiar. It reminded me of my grandmother's house (she was a heavy smoker).

When I opened the package with the 3 vials, a blast of Chergui filled the air. I could barely smell anything even when sniffing the Jubilation XXV vials. And yeah...that's why I almost always sample.
