As it's not a fragrance-related subject, it could be done in the Off Topic thread.

Nice video, KBE. As it happens, my sister's MIL lives here and her family (my sister and BIL) live far away. The old gal has become pretty confused and should NOT be driving. I offered to take her out on errands. The local stores deliver. The problem is getting her to give up her car keys. She won't take her pills which could help her. It's a real conundrum. I don't want to get involved or insult her. She's VERY stubborn. I would like to help.

It certainly can be a problem kumquat. I believe that taking a license to drive away from an elderly person based entirely on age is not a good thing. First, many younger than the elderly cannot drive for the very reasons many of the elderly are considered not to be able to drive: poor eyesight, poor reflexes, bad judgement and so on. Second, taking a license away from the elderly should be based on a thorough examination of driving skills, eyesight etc. and not on age alone. Of course more frequent re-examinations for the elderly than those imposed on younger folks seems reasonable given the problematic geometric graph of loss of driving skills for most of us as we enter and progress in old age. I personally know of several octogenarians whose driving ability and judgement far exceeds some thirty-somethings I am acquainted with. It is a life changing decision for those who lose their driving license in old age, and should be done only on an individual basis not relying only on attained age but only for good reason(s).

I knew a gentleman who passed away just a few months prior to his 107th birthday. He had attended the 1904 World's Fair with his father and later collected and wrote a book of the numismatic related items produced for that fair. I first met him when he was President of the Florida United Numismatists organization (FUN) and was still a dynamo at age 81. He drove a vehicle well into his 90s, was sharp of mind and quick of body at that age also. He lived by himself, after he had outlived his third wife, into his 11th decade and only entered an assisted living community after his 104th birthday.

My own father's father lived to be 97. He was born in 1872. He knew and remembered his grandfather who was born in 1795!! He relayed several interesting stories about "the old coot" (his grandfather, who wore a tricorne hat into the 1880s) to me when I was a teenager.

Default Looking for great label printer

Not sure where to post it, if this isn't the right forum - mods, please move it to more appropriate place.

I'm looking for a label printer that can print on gold or silver metallic tape (but white is fine too) in very small but sharp and crisp fonts. Can be stand-alone, but if you can hook it up to a Mac for more control, even better. Text quality at small font sizes is most important, but if you can print some graphics from a Mac software, that would be a nice bonus (though not hugely important).

I want to label my decants and travel atomizers better. I'm thinking the quality like the gold labels on Tom Ford 4ml samples, or something along those lines. The label printers I've tried so far want to print everything much too big for small atomizer bottles. And if you can print labels without the printer wasting 2 inches of tape on both sides of the text, that's a plus - most label printers waste 90% of the tape for no reason at all.

    Price not important, quality is.

If you find one, let me know. I bought the 'Brother PT Touch' and it doesn't work. The software won't download.

I was looking at a label maker that didn't require software. I thought it would be perfect. And it wasn't 'Brother', something else. But it wasn't compatible with Mac so I didn't buy it.

My very same quest. Just bought the Dymo Label Manager yesterday and, as feared, the type looks awful. The smaller the worser.
In the past I printed beautiful labels from sheets, three columns of 10 or 12. Looked great. But sure is a lot of work for one or two labels at a time--in particular, getting the sheets to feed accurately on my 300dpi laser printer. Let's hope someone's had more luck and will promptly share it.
    cheers, tim

Does anyone here have a career in biotech? I am in high school and really interested in pursuing biotech as I think it is very rewarding in multiple ways. Can anyone share some experience or their opinion?

Default Any Basenoters in India? I need a favour...

My apologies for posting a non-fragrance related personal request but I couldn't think of another section - I need to get a particular item (an ayurvedic medicine) that can only be shipped within India, so I am wondering if any of our resident Basenoters in India may be able to help with receiving the package in India and shipping it to Canada. Please PM me if you can help!

Mods - please feel free to move this to appropriate section if needed, thanks!

    Default Lenten sacrifice

Though not really a sacrifice spiritually, I have gone without scent since Ash Wednesday and hope to make it to Easter. In the meantime, as back-ups, I've also given up alcohol, chocolate, and all carnal pleasures. God be with me!

Snow-dirt, piles of snow covered with soot. That pile of 'snirt' is about 100' long. All the white snow around it has melted.

Ack! But weird that the white snow has melted while the darker has stayed. White (a mix of all colors and associated wavelengths thus more heat provided by photons is reflected) reflects sunlight much more than dark and should melt much slower..unless the dark snow was piled much thicker than the surrounding white snow.

Yes, I don't know where you're from but in snowy areas these piles are from scooped snow that has been sitting all winter. I suppose the soot forms an insulation of sorts.
