I have been blessed in my life in that I have had the opportunity to travel to more than 69 countries in better times. Vacations now are usually repeat visits to countries my family and I enjoy most or to a place we have in Buzios, Brazil. We live in a different world now and safety is a big issue for me. Nevertheless, two countries that I have not been to that I am thinking of are the UAE and the Maldives. Traveling is the best!

It's still better times, hednic. I've traveled, too, never counted the countries...upwards of 15, anyway, with many repeats. One of my pet peeves is how this darned 24-hour news cycle has mangled our view of reality. There are 7 billion plus people on earth, but on any given day if a handful go berzerk and cause problems for a few others, that's all we hear. That the massively vast majority of us are living peaceful, sane, safe lives never makes the news. I've traveled so many places -- it's gotta be a lot more than 15, must count -- alone and in the company of others and every single time I met the most wonderful people who often stopped my heart with their wisdom and kindness. I hate that our news media has filled us with fear, in contradiction to reality. Most of us will never be harmed in any way by others. Yes, we're all going to die. We don't know where or how, but it will only happen on one day. For that reason, I've stopped a steady diet of the news. If something important happens, I figure I'll hear about it, but I refuse to fill all the good days of my life with media-induced terror.

I hope you go to the UAE and the Maldives and encounter the splendid people waiting to meet someone like you and be better for it.

Okay, now that I've got that off my chest, I return you to your regularly-scheduled subject...oh, this is Off-Topic! Perfect.

Glad you both enjoyed it (and your hubs too teardrop). The original site I found this is an interesting one: www.wimp.com Unfortunately this vBulletin program won't pick up WIMP videos directly. To post on Basenotes I go to the Youtube link at the bottom of the WIMP video and copy that video site. Wimp posts only 5 new videos per day to be posted on the site, but one can browse their archives for several years back. No smut allowed and widely eclectic presentations. I love it!

I have had this machine for some time and never downloaded the software. For some reason I've been anticipating a huge headache. Can anyone guide me through this process so I won't be too frustrated?

    Great! You need two downloads.

The first is the driver software that was released in 2011:

    http://welcome.solutions.brother.com...lid=dlfp001832

The second is the updated editor tool released in 2013:

    http://welcome.solutions.brother.com...lid=dlfp002272

Both of these will be standard packages that you install on a Mac just like usual stuff.

Both pages that I gave you have instructions that you can keep open while installing. Don't be intimidated - most of the instructions are how to uninstall, which you don't need.

After you download in your browser, you just go to the downloads and double-click. I would say do the driver first, to make sure the editor installation detects those changes, but if the directions contradict me, no problem.

Those are great videos! I've seen those before. It's extraordinary how emotional dogs are. It's funny, our cats are fairly glad to see us after we've been away. You wouldn't think they would be but they really do express an interest. They rub up against us and purr. Although our stray cat that we renovated immediately marched over and whizzed on one of my (luckily) plastic shopping bags from our trip. So I guess that's what he thought about being left alone with the babysitter for 10 days!

Default Share your resources for French Pronunciation

When I was in high school, I took French and fell head over heels in love with the beauty of the language. Now, 20+ years later, some of it still sticks in my brain. However, I like to pronounce things correctly so I've been working on learning the correct pronunciations for the various terms found in parfumerie as well as the many French Design houses.

I thought I might not be the only one who wanted to be certain that Toilette was NOT, in fact pronounced like toilet. So, where do you like to go to find proper pronunciation?

I found this young lady's video helpful. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6v6DrsDA48M

If you have an iphone there's a button with a speaker icon on the dictionary app. You push that and get the correct pronunciation. There must be one available on a website somewhere.

I was thinking it might be a good sticky to have a pronunciation guide thread since I can't be the only one who struggles.

There's already a suitable sticky, so it may be an idea to add the additional resources to that one in order to keep it all together?

I ran across this. Don't know if it's free but there must be some that are.

There used to be a France based Basenoter who had put up an excellent French pronunciation perfume guide and could hear his voice, way pre-Huddler and should still be around to access, but haven't had any luck finding it yet.

Google translate not only identifies the language, but speaks the pronunciation of whatever you type. Sometimes it misses, but not often.
