    Default SOTD November 7, 2013

Trying out Mona's Vanille. I mostly get vanilla & vetiver. Dry, branchy, a bit smoky...powdery. Like Sycomore got mashed up with SDV. Something like that..with some bitterness added. Too dry and bitter for my tastes.

Tried Violette Fumee as well, which I liked more....but it doesn't last long on my skin.

    Good morning everyone

TF Grey Vetiver for this mornings run, really enjoying this take on vetiver. No dolphins just a bevy of black swans in the river today.

Lazy day at home, napping and snacking and listening to the last few CD's of Wagner. Have a date with a pretty impressive cheese platter, late harvest cabernet, Ingrid and Humphrey.

    ErinK thumper just perfect. LOL

Evangeline I'm jealous, I can only do tiny spritzes of AE doubling down with the body cream is just beyond me. It's true AE picks you, on the right person it is stunning, lucky you!

Oh, in lots of Chanel no.5 EdP tonight.

Also trying Shalimar Ode a la Vanille Sur la Route du Mexique...I think??? Maybe the person I got it from labelled it wrong cause all I get is lime. That's it. This has to be wrong? No caramel, no chocolate..just lime. Perhaps this is Eau De Shalimar. Which ever it is, I just don't get this one. Lime and big florals are all I get. And got some icky green floral that doesn't seem to mesh there for a bit. I guess iris but it doesn't smell good to my nose in this. Lime and florals..all I get. Sharp...very citrusy..pretty floral. Did I mention sharp?? Sorry but this didn't work for me.

ErinK, I really like the sound of your Iris d'Argent. I can't help noticing that Keiko Mecheri has had a real surge in popularity here recently and with it has come the realization that I know absolutely nothing about the house. Apparently Liberty are now stocking the range in London so I am open to any recommendations. Anything goes provided it isn't overtly animalic or skanky - over to you, folks ....

Hello everyone, SOTD is Pink Sugar. I've had this bottle since 2005 (bought, incidentally, from gentleman Maisonstinky). I finally emptied it this morning. LOL, it only took me 8 years to do it.

    Have a lovely day, all.

Hi, everyone! Giving a proper full wearing to Byredo Black Saffron courtesy of the marvelous Furriner at our Chicago meet-up. Liking it quite a bit so far...

    Hello everyone -

I'm in vintage Miss Dior this morning, 70s edt. I chose this for me this morning, rather than my little dancers ...not so sure what they'll think about it, but they're generally not very shy about letting me know, lol! Some of them could learn a thing or two from Thumper.

    Y'all have a great day!

Thanks, though I doubt it smells better on me than anyone else; I think you just have to really enjoy it to make such a commitment to it, lol! I just can't resist a good body cream, and this is such a good one. It's much lighter on the patch, giving the floral accord more of a spotlight, and making the whole composition cleaner and brighter, and also a bit more user-friendly. Along with the Perfumer's Reserve, this is the AE I usually recommend to anyone new to it. But it is very highly perfumed, so there's really no need to double down ...even I use restraint when I'm wearing the cream, but I never can resist a final spritz.

Good morning, good smelling people. I am in Keiko Meicheri Datura Blanche. In its cold weather variation, it is sparkling green floral, sharp smelling, over a sugared vanilla. Crystalline. Lovely, and still wierd, but not the heavy narcotic sort of vibe it gets in the heat. More like frozen green flowers.

Is it really, Kiliwia? That's good news! It's pretty silly, but I've been hopeful about it for obvious reasons, though I've read a lot of comments that mention "boring" and "generic" and even "pale" and "insipid", so I hadn't planned to go out of my way to sniff it. But it's nice, huh? Do you imagine delicate tutus and satiny toe shoes when you sniff it? Or is it relying too heavily on the sweat, liniment and cigarettes accord to make its point?

    Good morning!!

Jon, I don't know much about Keiko Mecheri, either, really, and I have never smelled any others than Iris d'Argent. If you are an iris fan, however, this is a really good one. (I see Robin is also wearing Keiko Mecheri today.) Angela from Now Smell This proposed a Rootiness Scale (which I LOVE) for iris perfumes in her recent review of Atelier Cologne Silver Iris (ie, 9 being Iris Silver Mist and Iris Poudre getting 2.5), and I would give Iris d'Argent a 7 or an 8.

Evangeline, lovin' the Miss Dior ad! SO CUTE!

Today I'm in Ineke After My Own Heart. I love the lilac opening but after an hour or so I am now in the laundry phase and this is not quite so charming.

Xscent, may have to expand my range of son-in-law shopping.

Melodious healing vibes for you, Jujy.

Good to hear, Kiliwia. From my one-time wearing, I would not call Iris Prima insipid. Subtle maybe and natural smelling—qualities I prize.

I sent an email to Cosmetic Manager Laura at the Chicago Saks asking whether, if I ordered that illusive souvenir bottle of Bond/Mothers from her, would she include a sample of Iris Prima? That's Plan D of the Bond/Mothers acquisition quest. I’ve already unsuccessfully executed Plan C, which was suggesting to someone at MakeUpAlley that I’d buy her bottle if she wanted to discuss it over here at Basenotes (since MUA does not permit discussing money). She had never heard of Basenotes and made me feel suspect for approaching her.

Today I looked at all my bottles and gave each a loving gaze. It’s satisfying to appreciate each for different reasons. In the end, I applied Comme des Garcons Incense Jaisalmer, remembering the day I bought it in Portland with Matildaben and Warum at my side. Quiet, comforting, natural, cedary, slightly sweet—a little more eye-opening than Bois des Iles, but cozy like that.

There’s a site I like called Houzz. They just published a restoration project whose results closely resemble my fantasy of heaven (if the lawn were replaced with prairie). Wanna see? http://www.houzz.com/ideabooks/19479149

I'm wearing Bottega Veneta today. This is still very high up on the wish list, although since I bought a bottle for a co-worker I would buy another one for myself.

Quarry, I loved the restoration of the spring house. It brings back memories of my late Grandma's spring house in Missouri, which wasn't as cool looking as the one in the article but a magical place all the same. It's sort of amazing how well the spring house worked to keep stuff cool and preserved ...

Still on vacation, but I don't have a working car yet and now the furnace is not working. Repairman on his way this afternoon. Guess it's a good thing I didn't make a lot of plans for this week.

hugs to all and get well wishes for those under the weather ...

shadesofbleu - welcome home sweetie. Car troubles? Oh dear, car troubles always get me really stressed out. ((bear hugs)). I'm sure you and your husband smell like a class act in your matching Chanels.
Quarry - I'm so glad that you're enjoying the Shalimar Body Cream I sent you. No, your experience is like mine, it's not your skin - the cream doesn't really smell like the scent until it's had time to warm up on body skin. When I first bought it, it surprised me alright. But once you wear it several times in a row, your nose finally gets this sort of remixed-Shalimar accord. It's definitely not as animalic as the vintage cream (which I also own) but it's also less powdery which is what I like. It also smells FANTASTIC layered with Habit Rouge.
Xscent - do you like Guerlain's Vetiver also? I find it superior, in every way, to Grey Vetiver. I'm talking about vintage Eau de Cologne, NOT current EdT.
tdem1961 - everytime I smell a young girl who's wearing Pink Sugar, I like it. Its a fun scent.
Evangeline - a woman (French) that worked here as a Realtor for years, wore AE as her signature scent & it smelled FAN-tastic on her. Really good. I've never smelled the cream (maybe she wore that too?) but I do own a bottle of the Perfumers Reserve and even that I really have to be in the mood for to wear. It's so potent but not quite as abrasive as the regular. Have you ever smelled Aramis 900 which is sort of the 'brother' of AE?

A friend of mine, from DC, is trying to buy his partner a vintage bottle of Equipage (as a surprise Xmas gift) so I spent last night with him on eBay reviewing what inventory is out there. I think he found one, that looks just like my bottle below (these are splash bottles which Hermes hasn't made for decades). So, this morning, I reached for my own bottle & doused myself with it. I love this stuff. Turin uses the word 'single-malt whiskey' in his review & I can totally see what he means.

Quarry, that looks like a really interesting website. I am looking forward to exploring it more and seeing some of their other featured projects! I briefly worked in historic preservation after college; I love this stuff!!

Teardrop, I am interested in the Gorilla Ginger - did I hear someone say it was discontinued, or am I thinking of something else?

And oh yeah, teardrop, this is for you:

Now I am officially wishing I wore something else today. After My Own Heart is just too sweet for me.Out of the several lil decants and samples in my purse, I'm thinking a few spritzes of No. 19 might layer OK over After My Own Heart to put a damper on the sweetness.
