    Default The ultimate niche fougere

    Hi Guys.
I am looking for something that, believe it or not, have not found yet (after 200 + fragrances). What I want is something like Paco Rabanne pour Homme but with more body, more potency and most of all classier. I am not just looking for a louder Paco Rabanne in a nicer bottle with a crazy price. I lust for something utterly masculine, a titanic fougere with barbershop properties and yet masterfully executed.
I need complexity, a cacophony of notes that ultimately embrace me in a masculine aura.

I would like to cross breed paco, river gauche, bois du portugal ,L ombre dans, guerlain vetiver and ... yatagan??
Your help will be appreciated it.

A tall order these days but Murdock do a old school Fougere with lots of oakmoss, lavender and spices. Check out the reviews here: http://www.basenotes.net/ID26135237.html

Amouage Interlude Man might do it, although I don't think it is technically a fougere.

Lippizan by Parfums De Marly. A vetivery aromatic fougere which I am wearing today. A very top drawer sort of affair. Something I feel like Gordon Gekko would wear.

I've been on a long quest to find the same thing, Basteri! The closest I've found is probably Invasion Barbare in the barbershop direction. Also, utterly masculine: Original Polo, Kouros, Azzaro PH, i.e. the usual suspects. I'm a big fan of Interlude as far as contemporary (no, it's no fougere). If you DO find the perfection you seek, please do pass along the name to me...

I can't speak highly enough of Etat Libre D'Orange Eloge du Traitre. A contemporary niche fougere with a surprisingly classical reference, which really meets your spec I think. Great quality, not too expensive, and a terrific and very satisfying wear.

... this was my first thought when reading this here.
And if you`re lucky, you`ll find a 200+ ml for the same price as a 50ml niche (or even cheaper). The juice of my one has turned brownish - and the aromatics changed a bit into a brilliant, peppery, dry-herbs, mossy direction. And it`s stroooooong!

I agree with Foustie. Having worn this yesterday, I can confirm that it has a lovely, long-lasting, very satisfying drydown.

Vintage Paco +2 (70's version). You indeed would not look for anything else anymore, I agree on that!

If you can get it: Gucci Nobile (not niche but one of the beter fougeres ever created).

    - Dolce & Gabbana: Pour Homme (vintage)
    - Paco Rabanne: Pour Homme (vintage)

    - Davidoff: Leather Blend Edp
    - Dior: Eau Sauvage Parfum
    - MPG: Santal Noble
    - Guerlain: Vetiver

I concur with my friend, Slayerized. Original Vintage Paco Rabanne Pour Homme is simply the benchmark. For me, the scent of a lifetime - as a lot of my friends know already this is my opinion.

However, Gucci Nobile is rather stunning - but rare and expensive. A must try.

Another that I must mention is Vintage Oscar Pour Lui. While not a 'traditional' fougere, it is out of this world and can still be found for reasonable prices.

    Cheers,

    ericrico

Good call on Gucci Nobile my father's fragrance I still have a modest amount left of the original bottle.

I would answer "Invasion Barbare" to the question posed in your thread title, but based on the description of what you're actually looking for, my answer is "New York," by Parfums de Nicolai (preferrably an older bottle, as I think it's been reformulated and the vintage is best).

I also think Fou d'Absinthe is a great fougere, with a little bit of a twist.

I've never smelled the older version but the newer version is sublime and LOVE it....Jack introduced me to this fine scent and can't get enough of it now....The oak moss is amazing along with the tonka, cinnamon and patchouli is impressive...I could care less if I find the vintage, I like the 2010 version a lot....

Another vote for Penhaligon's Sartorial. And I will add Eucris by Geo F. Trumper. Both of these are superb, masculine, barbershop fragrances. Evoking the old school yet smelling totally modern, classic, timeless.

If you don't already own Invasion Barbare, I consider it a must own. When one gets their wardrobe up in the two hundred bottle category, unique would be important also.

Grand Cuir by Parfums Retro is outstanding IMHO.

In my search I would have to sample the new 2013 version of Patou Pour Homme for consideration.

It's cocktail time, then - thought about layering all the ones you mention?

Seriously, I wonder if such a thing exists - especially in these IFRA ingredient depleted times - everything is getting 'tinnier' to use a Monty Pythons descriptive.

Invasion Barbare is great. I don't think anybody has mentioned Or Black yet? It's pretty dry and makes no attempt to be affable but it's a great fougere - just overdose it a bit and you're off.

In terms of 'aromatic' I rate Voyou & Beloved Man very highly but I'm in a definite minority, so make of that what you will. Guerlain have also recently released a companion aftershave moisturiser to Voyou that is excellent.
