Floris Sandalwood comes to mind. I haven't tried it but it's supposed to be excellent.

Creed Bois de Santal was one of the best sandalwood's ever, IMO. Powerful stuff. Some report that it has actual Mysore oil in it.

This one. I'm admittedly a bit of a Creed hater, but this one is amazing. I would guess it has the real stuff, because it has a warmth and creaminess that modern "santal" - cedar in drag, really - lacks.

I recently got a bottle of Yardley's discontinued Sandalwood cologne. It's what I remember sandalwood smelling like.

I've been on a Sandalwood kick lately. Two that I'm enjoying a lot are Keiko Mecheri Bois de Santal and Serge Lutens Santal Majescule

Seriously? Not helpful. It's easier to find Mysore sandalwood essential oil than this stuff. I don't even know anyone that had ever smelled it.

How about vintage Egoiste, or Egoiste Cologne Concentree? Those actually turn up occasionally for less than $800 a bottle.

Well, you'd have to agree that 'discontinued' and 'dominant sw' apply. Parameters for 'availability' or 'price' weren't expressly mentioned; maybe they were implied and I just didn't catch it, oh well.

True, true - I guess. I mean, who knows? 99+% of us will never get to smell it, but I suppose it must be a sandalwood bomb if it was a prototype for Egoiste, right?

It's just a bit like telling someone looking for a nice storage chest that the Lost Ark of the Covenant would probably suit their needs.

I got a chuckle out of it.

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions.
A friend of mine in London bought the Floris Sandalwood edp/ extreme version for me. I can't wait to try it next time I visit him, which will probably be in Spring.
I have the fragrance called By, (women) D&G in my collection, I haven't worn it for years so I will try this out this evening !
Frankly, I don't get a dominant sandalwood note with Egoiste, (and the bottle I have is definitely vintage). I find the vanilla very dominant in this fragrance. I will give it another try, but I do find it cloying and almost headache inducing for me personally.
If I ever make it to Paris I will check out the confidential collection Santal de Mysore from Montale.
Thanks, for the other suggestions. I will try them.
I sprayed JHL by Aramis approximately an hour ago and I am really getting a dominant sandalwood note, but it's also accompanied by a very loud cinnamon note which is spoiling it for me.
I'm hoping to find a fragrance from from the early eighties or earlier, where I can assume that real sandalwood was used in generous amounts....before the price of sandalwood went through the roof.

Sandalwood Extreme? Never heard of it... I wonder what that smells like too. Now if you are referring to Santal Extreme, I own that one and while I absolutely love it I think you will be disappointed if seeking a "true" sandalwood fragrance.

Quiksilver for Men. Don't knock it until you've tried it. Fantastic and simple combination of bitter orange and sandalwood, with a slight soapy feeling. The sandalwood really makes its mark in the dry down though, but you can smell it from the opening.

I asked a friend to look out for any perfumes containing sandalwood. He told me he'd bought Sandalwood Extreme from Floris. I haven't seen it yet, but I assume he means Santal Extreme ?

Patou Pour Homme Prive and L'Artisan's Santal.
Two of the best, smoothest sandalwoods ever. They both contain real Mysore if I'm not mistaken.

They are two of my most cherished bottles.

The question was old/classic fragrances, and although it's not technically 'discontinued', 10-20 year old bottles of English Leather are pretty easy to find, and back then English Leather had a really good sandalwood drydown.

And here's another that I just picked up in beautifully preserved condition: Roman Brio Leather by Leeming / Pfizer. Awesome bottle, too!

This one is really great - one of the best and most unique aquatics ever. They used ethical Aussie sandalwood, too, which was what attracted me in the first place. It's not Mysore, but they put two very good perfumers on it, and it smells almost like it. Not just a little sandalwood - like you said, it is one of the most prominent notes for the whole ride. When I found out it was DC, I made a special point to snag some when it showed up in Marshall's.

I just received a bottle of Floris Santal two days ago..
It must not be not the same as the Floris Sandalwood you have..
I'll take Santal Nobel any day of the week..
I'm looking to get rid of the Floris Santal and see it as a big mistake
