Post New, and looking for my 1st bottle

Hey I'm brand new to cologne and basenotes and am looking to buy my first bottle. Tried nearly everything popular from Armani and Chanel to Versace and YSL. For the most part I dislike the vast majority of the popularized fragrances at the counter. I'm looking for something reliable for my first buy with solid longevity and projection no need to reapply and will last all day, would like to start it out on a good note. So far the only thing I've been drawn to has been YSL L'Homme. Something elegant, with a woody aromatic and aquatic scent (been wanting to try AdG Essenza). Anything would be helpful this forums regarded, thanks for any suggestions or tips!

I'm 22 in college, if that is relevant.

Did you check out YSL La Nuit de l'Homme?

I would reckon you'd want to get your hands on a sample of Creed - Millesime Imperial or Silver Mountain Water.

Yes I did and wore it for a day, not to bash it I know it has great reviews, but I literally hate it. The deep flavor to it makes me a bit sick.

I dislike the fragrance counter stuff as well, so for woody aromatics with good longevity, you make take a sniff at:

Sonoma Scent Studio -- Forest Walk
    Slumberhouse -- Norne
    Roja Dove -- Diaghilev
    Chanel -- Sycamore
    Annick Goutal -- Duel
    Serge Lutens -- Chene

Those are all sort of brisk, woody scents that hold up well.

Don't have a whole lot to say about aquatics, but Humiecki&Graef's Skarb has a weirdly aquatic component, and holds up fantastically. It's a little smoky, though.

    Good luck on your search!

Try Burberry touch. It's a great fragrance with awesome projection and awesome longevity. On my skin it does really well. It was my scent of the day yesterday. I put it on around 830am and I could still smell it 12 hrs later! Give it a try.

When I tried it, touch smelled good but the bottle was broken so it was leaking out not spraying. I'll try it as soon as I can!

I wanted Bleu de Chanel bad, but when I tried it the Grapefruit was so sour it was offsetting. I wondered why people gave it such great reviews.

Narrowed a few down that have similar notes to what I'm looking for:

    CHANEL - Platinum Egoiste
    DIOR - Homme Sport
    Carolina Herrera - 212 Men

Thanks for all the replies so far!

    Dior Homme
    Givenchy Play Intense
    Tom Ford Grey Vetiver
    Gucci pour Homme II

You can find all of these at your local Sephora or most department stores to test. I'd give these a shot.

If Creed lasts on your skin I think that's what to get, if not then I'd get something safe and popular. Chanel's are very likeable.

    Agreed!

Dior Homme Sport is an extremely elegant sport scent, too. And Platinum Égoïste has its fans as well. All solid scents. I love DHS myself, and I have PE, too.

If you liked Platinum Égoïste, then also consider other straight fougères - Drakkar Noir and Rive Gauche Pour Homme for older, and Diesel Fuel for Life for newer.

If you liked Dior Homme Sport, you might like Armani Code Sport.

Sounds like you're finding some stuff that you like.

PS - AdG Essenza is great. Love that one!!!

Why not trying a vetiver, like Guerlain's ? Or, event better, Givenchy's ?

Went sniffing samples recently and two that come to mind:

Cartier declaration d'un soir. - quite unique yet accessible / suitable for most occasions (leaning toward the formal side) / can probably be picked up cheap and easily sampled / A bold masculine rose note that most of your associates won't be wearing yet.

Actually - this is the ONE that i'd suggest (I'll scrap the 2nd one!) go for the Cartier
