Default Objections and Likes: Looks Like They're Gone!

Well, it was fun while it lasted.

I objected to everything. Posts I liked, posts I disliked. Why not? The button's there, I just couldn't help but click it. Especially in threads about the objection button. That was too much for me to handle.

"This objection button is the coward's way out!"

    Object.

"Please stop sending me emails about objections and likes."

    Object.

"At least if I'm going to object to something I'll object with the quote and my username in the reply!"

    Object.

"Recently purchased Mistuoko for my grandmother's 90th birthday present."

    Object!!!

"What should I give my son for his high school graduation?"

    Well, you get the idea...

Now that it's gone, don't you wish you had used it more while it was here?

    I agree.
Remember that while it is perfectly acceptable to criticize the content of a post - criticizing the poster is not.
Mean spirited, nasty, snide, sarcastic, hateful, and rude individuals don't warrant or deserve other individuals' acknowledgement or respect.

I would vote for that they be gone for good. Permanently. Good riddance.

With the logic of Murphy's Law: "If there is something that could go wrong, it will go wrong." Or, "Keep it simple, stupid."

We were doing fine without these.

Just quote the previous poster's content, and reply to that.

    Easy.

    I agree Ursula!

That's why I objected to many of your previous threads.

So what does the "post thanks/like" thingy on the left with an up or down arrow do ?

I wouldn't be sorry to see them go, personally. I don't think they improve Basenotes.

The thing on the Postbit matinijo?
Whilst the 'thumbs' are disabled - not a lot!

When the 'thumbs' are working, clicking it it should reveal an approximation of the owner's posting reputation as judged by thumbs up or down clicks by members who are participating in the thumbs up/down programme aka 'DB Post thanks/like module'.

Perhaps not the original intention, but apparently the current result!

It may have been hoped that the discussions might have been improved by the judicious use of this function.

@ Ursula - the software adds & subtracts all of the ups & downs to produce the results which are displayed for members to view if they wish.
Presumably, if someone has a particularly good or poor reputation, there is a reason.

We don't have a 'list' of them to review.

I clicked on the Like symbol next to Post Thanks / but nothing happened, nothing changed. Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down
    How?

    ************************************************** ***************************************
Is this not very similar to the LIKE button which is now (temporarily) removed?

I am confused why would there be two same functions for LIKE a post?

Prior to today, when clicked, it was displaying the overall reputation but not affecting it in any way, Ursula.

At the moment it's not working - maybe the tech team could advise if this is intended to be a replacement for the thumbs up/down buttons please?

As the module was being worked on, work may still be in progress.

I guess if this feature comes back, I'll have to go in and create a few dummy accounts so I can go in and start liking myself - gotta build up the "street cred" ya know... Yeah, this sounds like a great feature - I'm sure it will do nothing but provide great benefit...

Nothing else has made me momentarily reconsider going back to Facebook. I breathed a sign of relief when I saw them gone. Facebook, fertile ground for fragrance discussion with NO useful features for it, has likes, but no dislikes. Disqus, the bloody battlefield of political death-matches, has both. I'm beginning to think that Zuckerberg made all of his money for a reason.

I vote for removing these options altogether.

I gather that an effort is being made to focus on fragrance discussion and restrict the amount of off topic discussion. The very nature of these buttons is off topic.

Let's stick to fragrance discussion instead of running popularity contests.

I think the like/object buttons are a good thing. The Like button is a nice way of giving a bit of recognition to a good, well though out post, without clogging up the thread with "+1" posts and the like. The object button is primarily intended to flag objectionable content to make it easier for mods to spot it quickly, as I understand it. I don't understand why people are worried about it. It's no harm if someone clicks it on your post if you haven't actually violated the rules.

The forum already shows post count and join date in the user block. These are de facto status badges, but all they tell you is how long ago someone created their account or how many times they've clicked the "Post" button. I think it would be more meaningful to know how many times their posts have been "liked".

Or here's a thought - how about getting rid of post count altogether and only showing a ratio of likes to posts in the trailing 3 months? If these badges act affect posting behavior (and for some people they appear to) this would create an incentive to create good posts that many people find worthwhile to read. Wouldn't that be a good thing?

I understand the intention - to improve the quality of fragrance discussion by providing feedback. An unintended consequence may be to make BN even more cliquey through mutual backslapping, inhibiting incomers and less forthright members from expressing disagreement with the cool kids.

Truly objectionable content has always been able to be addressed via the 'alert' button, so the 'object' button adds little IMO, and risks turning Basenotes into Bitchnotes (see what I did there?).

As a member, my personal preference is for losing them for many of the reasons already stated, plus they do appear to currently provide an extra dimension for the expression of random dis-satisfactions!

As a new moderator, it has been a most revealing experience.

This "Return Home" is a new beginning. The slate has been wiped clean. Why complicate matters with Like/Object buttons? You need more moderators who can step in when needed.
Everybody is already on their best behaviors.

PARFUMO - you may want to have a quick cursory look over there - has a Reward System with Parfumo Points. 2 points for a post in Forum discussions, 40 points for a review, 10 points for submitting a perfume photo for the Perfume Page, 50 points for adding a perfume to the data bank.

In real life, efforts get rewarded. A raise in your pay feels good. A degree or a diploma feels good. Those are the things by which status is measured.

So, in Basenotes status is accomplished by having a high post count? That is the impression I got. Some one liners seem to be chasing post counts. So that the member can begin trading.

To make the content better, each member can only contribute by writing well. To add to the general spirit of perfume discussions.

I like the banter and humor here. But, that remark is "off topic" so I will now stop putting in my two cents.

Thank you, Ursula - there's always Fragrantica - just mentioning all of the options in case members were unaware of them
