Thread: My core 6 frags

  1. #1

    Default My core 6 frags

In recent months, my financial priorities have changed and I've decided to keep a core of 6 frags and not buy any more for the forseeable future.

The 6 that will form my final wardrobe once other bottles & samples are used up will be:

    Gucci pour homme II
    Chanel Allure edition blanche
    Mona di Orio Vanille
    Midnight in Paris
    Dior Homme
    Guerlain Homme

    1. Congratulations on having responsible priorities
    2. I've also wondered what I'd choose if I cut back to a very modest-sized collection (i.e. Non-obsessive); just those that covered the meaningful occasions, in the best way
    3. Dior Homme would automatically be among that short list for me too, I'd have to think a bit harder about the rest

That aside its a good list, although I would substitute the Intense versions of Dior and Guerlain for your regular picks.

I get really good longevity from GPHII, a good 8 hours.

That's a nice list that should work well in the long run. The only change I'd make personally, is swapping MIP for Pure Malt. The reason why (other than that I prefer Pure Malt to MIP) is that I feel you could find redundancy between Dior Homme and MIP, and since your keeping just six, you want as much variety as possible.

I'm also glad to see Guerlain Homme made the final cut!

I wish I had your discipline...

In my opinion, a solidly diverse selection, yet also concentrating on smooth (but still persistent and distinctive fragrances). Again in my opinion, excellent choices as versatile, all year, daytime signature scents/signature scent rotation.

5 great ones, I would do without the MdO Vanille and plug in Pure Malt. Otherwise pretty solid list - especially the top 2!

If you can get through the smokey opening of MdO Vanille, that vanilla base is jut amazing. I've decided that pure malt is just a bit too sweet for me to wear on a regular basis.

GH isn't one of my favourites, just using up my small bottle, so probably wouldn't make my core 6, or 60. It's nice though.

Not sure if this was intended to turn into a 'Your Core 6' thread, but I like the idea of it!

I've tried to cover all seasons and my favourite notes.

    Back to Black - Winter/Fall - Tobacco
Virgin Island Water - Summer - Citrus
Spiritueuse Double Vanille - Winter - Vanilla & Booze
    Sycomore - Fall/Spring - Vetiver & Smoke
Aventus or Green Irish Tweed - All Year Round/Formal
    Portrait of a Lady - Fall/Winter - Incense & Floral

Although I feel like I need some oud in there. Portrait of a Lady is just clinging on. Royal Oud is snapping at it's heels, as is Interlude, because it would cover me for my amber and oud. I suppose Amber Oud would work too.

The more of a collection I build, the fewer I actually wear during any given month, though the core 5 or 6 that I do wear evolves with the seasons. I could easily limit my entire collection to 10 bottles (I don't want to, but I easily could). If I had to limit it to six, mine would be:

    - Interlude Man
    - L'Air du Desert Marocain
    - Gucci Pour Homme II
    - Royal Oud
    - Hanae Mori HM
    - Molecule 01

I do too. GphII lasts around 10 hours on my skin.
In my swap list: Gucci Pour Homme (2003) BNIB.
I'm looking for Reflection Man or Andy Warhol (silver bottle w/Andy's face)

    Dior Homme (edt)
    Monsieur Balmain

Seems a little heavy on fresh 'day at the office' type of scents. But without knowing your lifestyle it's tricky to give more thoughtful input.

If I were to stick to 6, I'd probably go nuts but the 1st team of 6 (yeah, got to cheat) would probably look like this:

Chanel 31 rue Cambon - floral
Creed Original Vetiver - fresh, vetiver
    Guerlain Mitsouko - classic chypre
Tom Ford Tuscan Leather - leather
Amouage Memoir Man - incense, aromatic woods
MDCI Invasion Barbare - formal, spicy fougere

    OR

    HdP Noir Patchouli
    Hermes Terre d'Hermes
    Armani Prive Rose d'Arabie
    MDCI Chypre Palatin
    Serge Lutens Daim Blond
    Loewe Esencia

    OR ....

Ooh, that's a tough one. Nice " Core 6 ". If I had to have a " Core 6 " it would be one daytime, one night time for warm weather and one for cooler weather and two for year round. My cooler weather daytime fragrance would be Tobacco Vanille, my cooler weather night time fragrance would be Noir de Noir. Daytime warmer weather would be L'Humaniste, night time would be Allure Homme Edition Blanche. My year round fragrances would be Spice and Wood and Aventus. I would also have to have 34 Boulevard Saint Germain and Musc Ravageur as my two wild cards... LOL! Damn, couldn't keep it at 6.
    My current top ten:
    1. Spice and Wood
    2. Epic Man
    3. Noir de Noir
    4. Tonka Imperiale
    5. Musc Ravageur
    6. Bois d'argent
    7. Apple Brandy
    8. Dior Homme Intense
    9. Tobacco Vanille

    I like your thinking.
I could almost have posted that myself. Only variations for me would be probably Monsieur De Givenchy instead of Monsieur Balmain for a classic citrus and Egoiste instead of Opium PH for the heavy oriental though I like these two also.
    * Thinking about it I also have to be in the just the right mood for Fahrenheit so I'd consider Givenchy Gentleman vintage or Kouros too.

Interesting exercise. Mine, as I think of them by purpose. With as few as 6, I had to really consider when and where I wear fragrances, with the Houston heat being a major limitation on wearing a lot of my very favorites year-round.

    1. Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille - Date / Cool weather
    2. Chanel Coromandel - Formal / Date / Cool weather
    3. Guerlain LIDGE - Formal / Date / Cool weather
    4. Hermes Terre d'Hermes EDP - Work / Casual / All weather
    5. Lubin Itasca - Work / Casual / All weather
    6. Tom Ford Neroli Portofino - Work / Casual / Warm weather

    Terre

    Burberry London
    Black Afgano

This last one is not really as versatile as everything else on the list, but I sort of have a special relationship with this Nasomatto beast. I honestly think that I would always need to have a bottle of this in my core line up. My wife detests it, but what can I do... Lol

    What a Q!

Prefered Houses, Guerlain, Givenchy, Chanel, YSL''s. Cartier, Rochas, Dior

    Guerlain: Heritage, Habit Rouge, Vetiver

Givenchy: Gentleman, Monsieur, Insensé - OK, done: but I can't hold to that amount, so I keep going:

Chanel: N° 19, Cuir de Russie, Egöiste Platinum, Egöiste, Pour Monsieur

    YSL: Kouros, Rive Gauche

    Cartier: Le Biaiser, Must

    Rochas: Pour Monsieur, Moustache

    Dior: Eau Sauvage

Plus others: Lomani, Joop!, Lalique Equus, Lalique Le Lion, LaliqueL'Hommage a L'Homme, Weil pH, Balenciaga pH, Pour Un Homme, JPG Fleur du Mâle, Le Mâle Terrible, Bvlgari Aqua, Pierre Cardin, Bois de Portugal, Juan Manuel, Thays, Cándido López, Ballena de la Pampa, Hornero, Un Poema de los Dones, Aromatics Elixir, Beagle, Kenzo Power, Heno de Pravia, Quorum, Agua de Lavanda, R are R Pepper and Woods,, Cuero de Rusia Roseto, Vetiver de Carven, Encre Noire.

Aroud 30ish something. I guess that would be a more than respectabe wardrobe and not the mess I have - too many I am not wearing many of them.

Vol de Nuit - first one pops into my head that must be here
Geranium Pour Monsieur - my fresh scent and my go-to airplane scent
Oscar de la Renta Pour Lui - I love 80's powerhouse scents and this one is quintessential to me
Tuscan Leather - blasphemy, but in my heart it edges out Knize Ten for this spot
Dior Vetiver - extremely versatile and best vetiver in my opinion
Tam Dao - this book-ends Vol de Nuit as one of the two that I'd probably grab if my house was on fire
