Default The smell of dry Forest/ Pines

I live in CA and can't seem to figure out where the sweet smelling dry scent is coming from when I walk into the forest, usually the Sierra Nevadas and the foothills. I'm thinking it must be the trees because I smell the same thing as well just walking by Fir trees in the city while jogging. I recognize some of the trees that make up the Sierra Nevada forest, usually white fir, sugar pine and some smaller pine I can't identfy that grows not as big and the trunk a bit wavy with lots of pine cones that litter the floor. I have no idea if it's the resin, bark, pine cone, needles, oil, etc. like I said, I smell the same thing in the city when jogging past fir planted trails. It's usually dry here in CA so it's not that damp forest/ fresh rain mossy & lichen smell. Sorry for the abundant of details but this smell have been haunting me my entire outdoors life so I registered asking for your guy's help and if there's any cologne that capture the scent, thanks.

Thanks, but I've never bought a cologne for $100+. Any idea how I can get a demo, scent card, etc?

Serge Lutens Fille en Aiguilles has that pine note that brings me back to those freshly cut Christmas trees. One of Uncle Serge's best. Usually can get a decent deal for 1.7oz for 70's or 80's ish.

I really like Itasca, a masculine forest scent, I would say. But alas, it is very short lived on my skin, about two hours only. If it was longer lasting, I would surely get a full bottle.

I love SL's Fille en Aiguilles and this will be my recommendation.

You might want to get something like the following sampler packs to see what you really like. Each interpretation will have it's own character.

+1 for FIlle en Aiguilles, it really reminds me of X'mas and pine forest in winter.

Itasca, it is perfect, but the down side is it is really short live on me.

    Welcome to Basenotes!

I really recommend Juniper Ridge for people who want authentic American forest aromas. I personally prefer stuff that is more "perfumey", but there are lots of people with sophisticated noses who are very impressed with Juniper Ridge. I have Siskiyou and think it's absolutely unique. It smells like you literally grabbed every scented bit of vegetation in the forest and held it to your face. I don't think I've ever smelled something so natural. Shockingly natural.

They have a sample kit - 6 mL for $20. That's worth trying, IMO. It's all 4 of their fragrances, 1.5 mL each. 6 mL lasts me a long time, unless I really love something and start going hog wild.

My personal favorite "piney" / coniferous perfumes (much more perfumey) are probably Dior's Eau Sauvage Parfum and L'Artisan Parfumeur's Fou d'Absinthe. You can sample the first one at Sephora - at least until recently. Not sure if it's still out on the shelves. And you can get samples of the second from LuckyScent.

Another superb house to try is Sonoma Scent Studio - Forest Walk and Winter Woods could very well be what you're after (and the tobacco and incense scents are well worth trying while you're at it).

Juniper Ridge's Inyo Cabin Spray...hands down. I don't know what happened to all of my previous posts, but I asked a very similar question not too long ago. I was looking for that "dusty California smell". Inyo is that, very literally.

Juniper Ridge's Inyo cabin spray...hands down. It's the smell of the eastern Sierras. I posted a very similar question a few months back also seeking the "dusty California smell". Inyo is that very literally.
    I think I got a bottle for $65.

And +1 for Fille en Aiguilles. That's more like a really well crafted "sophisticated" fragrance that implies the scent you're referring to, while the Juniper Ridge fragrances will smell nothing like your department store formulations and smell exactly like hiking through the back-country. Some people find them hard to wear because of that. I spray Inyo on my clothes (and my sheets and curtains and rugs) rather than on my skin as it's better suited for that.
I'm waiting on a sample of FeA that's in the mail...can't wait to give it a full wearing!

To my nose, Caron Yatagan smells exactly like dry pine forest. It can be found online very reasonably priced, too.
I'll also add an agreement with Fille en Aiguilles. It's not as dry as Yatagan though.

Almost identical, and to me they're what you're after.
