    Very good sample list--it's sort of a "who's who" list of niche fragrances. I'm a big fan of Sycomore, 1270, 2 Man, Aomassai, M extract, Invasion Barbare, Feminite du Bois. You're bound to stumble upon some real winders. Good luck!

    Ok! Let the second package niche fragrance testing begin!!!

    So, the first house I began was Frapin!

    --------> Frapin L´Humaniste

    Let me tell you one thing: This fragrance was love at first sniff! This scent is awesome. Projects nicely for about 3-4 h, but after that it starts to fade slowly. Lasted on my skin for about 9h. A great masculine scent. Wish it was a bit stronger, though. That´s the only let down I find. Plus, I do find this one easy to wear and to be very versatile.

    This was the first one to be tested. I´m glad! Great way to start!

    Scent: 9.30
    Longevity: 8.15
    Sillage: 8
    Projection: 7.75
    Uniqueness: 8
    Versatiliy: 8.75
    Scent masculinity: 9.15
    --- Overall: 8.44

    Would I buy it? YES!!!

    Thank you!

    Stay tuned!

    thats a grt list JohnnyACL!!! Do add L'Ombre Fauve from Parfumerie Generale to your future testing...

    As for L'Humaniste - love it too, but it's terribly weak on my skin, gone in 2-3 hrs.

    Great choices to sample.

    Liaisons dangereuses: delicious plum!

    Ambre Precieux: magnificent sweet amber!

    Arabie: lovely mix of dried fruits!

    Enjoy sampling and I'm looking forward to your comments.

    I'm impressed you went with Absolue pour le Soir after all as we'd discussed it before and it seemed like you'd shied away from it. It's a brilliant composition, but one that might catch you a little off guard.

    Ok, guys, let me tell you this: what a great scent!!!!! So far, my favourite gourmand. Projects very well for 4-5h, good sillage and it lasted four about 14-15h on my skin! The “downside” – not the most masculine scent, but masculine enough, though.

    Scent: 9.65
    Longevity: 9
    Sillage: 8.5
    Projection: 8.5
    Uniqueness: 9
    Versatiliy: 7.75

    DaveStPaul, pity that I had to start another thread, because the main one ""Niche fragrance testing (samples) - pt1" (http://www.basenotes.net/t/377921/ni...g#post_3121221) is not available yet since Basenotes changed. I tested 23 fragrance and made several rankings (Overall, Scent, Longevity, etc).

    The first package testing included:

    Amouage:

    Creed:
    - Aventus
    - Millesime Imperial
    - Silver Mountain Water
    - Virgin Island Water

    Frederic Malle:
    - Musc Ravageur
    - Vetiver Extraordinaire

    Le Labo:
    - Bergamote 22
    - Rose 31

    Maison Francis Kurkdjian:
    - Acqua Universalis Forte
    - Lumière Noire

    Nasomatto:
    - Pardon

    Serge Lutens:
    - Chergui

    Tauer Perfumes:
    - L´Air du Desert Maroican

    Tom Ford Private Blend:
    - Tobacco Vanille

    - Oud Wood

    Special/Limited Editions (Mainstream):

    - Thierry Mugler´s Pure Malt
    - Van Cleef & Arpels Midnight In Paris

    Well, shamely I didn´t get a copy of the work I had with this testing, so I´ll have to wait until it will available again, in order to join testing pt2 results with testing pt1´s!

    I´ll post Montale Black Aoud results later.

    Hi, guys!

    Time for the first Montale fragrance!

    --------> Montale Black Aoud

    First impression? A bomb and intrusive harsh disagreeable scent! However, about 10-15 min it started to turn agreeable. After that, at some point I simply couldn´t stop smelling my wrist. I really like this! It´s strange because there´s something about this scent and can´t explain. Don´t think it´s unique and it has thinks that would keep me way from it (oud, for example), but honestly, I really like it! And man, lasted for about 16h!

    Sillage is enormous, as projection is really good (about 6h). You really won´t go unnoticed wherever you are. Nevertheless, I can see this in another league (bellow) regarding quality, as I find it a bit synthetic (or maybe it´s my nose…). And no, this is not an unquestionable masculine scent, in my opinion. Poor versatility, also! I would NEVER use this at work, formal occasion, date, etc. However, overall, I think its a very good one as I really really like it!

    Scent: 8.5
    Longevity: 9.5
    Sillage: 9.45
    Projection: 9
    Uniqueness: 8
    Versatiliy: 6
    Scent masculinity: 6
    --- Overall: 8.04

    Would I buy it? Yes!

    I wore this yesterday...have not worn it since last winter. Honestly, I was thinking that I liked other fragrances in the genera more but after wearing it I have reminded myself that I adore this fragrance! A bit harsh, maybe "medicinal" and in your face, but among the best in this style. My bottle is from the days of "haute concentration" and definately takes no prisoners! One spray to the chest and I am good to go. And yes, this one lasts a full 24 hours.

    Agreed! I like it a lot, also, but I think it´s a love/hate fragrance case. I can see people avoiding being close at work, for example. It can be really intrusive. However, it´s almost addictive, as I keep sniffing my wrist.

    In my opinion, this fragrance deserves to be in the lower 8 region of the Overall Ranking.

    Hi, guys!

    Here´s the next opinion:

    --------> Tom Ford Noir de Noir

    No, no, no, guys! Man, I expected much more from Tom Ford´s Private Blend. Honestly, I find this fragrance to be quite common, on my skin…! I bought it as many said wonders of it but I think there´s nothing great about this rose scent. Lumiere Noire and/or Rose 31 are MUCH better, in my opinion and since were talking about Rose and Oud, Black Aoud is also way better! Plus, I don´t see it as unisex. Way too feminine. The scent is good on paper, but not great on my skin. On my skin it even smells kind of...cheap. The scent lasted for 9h and sillage was very good. Projection was average 3-4h. What a disappointment!

    Scent: 4.5
    Longevity: 8
    Sillage: 8.5
    Projection: 7.5
    Uniqueness: 6
    Versatiliy: 6
    Scent masculinity: 4
    --- Overall: 6.36

    Would I buy it? No!!!

    4 - Tom Ford Noir de Noir -------> 6.36

    Ok, guys, time for a tricky one!

    -------->Maison Francis Kurkdjian Absolue Pour le Soir

    Well, here we go, guys!

    I must say the opening of this frangrance is bad!!! Harsh and the scent reminds me something animalistic. After 20 min slowly becomes better and, eventually, smells good. Good, not VERY good or awesome. Projects quite nicelyfor 3h with moderate sillage. Got about 13 h of longevity. Overall, it´s a nice fragrance, far from MFK best (in my opinion), Lumiére Noire. I´d put it in the same “league” of Acqua Universalis Forte, although this one (AUF) is way better regarding projection, sillage and longevity. And, somehow, the fact of having a harsh non agreeable opening and, the scent its self, reminds me a bit of Musc Ravageur, althought I find the latter far way better. Not a versatile fragrance, in my opinion.

    Scent: 7.00
    Longevity: 9.25
    Sillage: 7.75
    Projection: 7.65
    Uniqueness: 7.5
    Versatiliy: 6.5
    Scent masculinity: 7.5
    --- Overall: 7.59

    Would I buy it? Probably not.

    Here we go for the first L ´Artisan fragrance!

    -------->L´Artisan Parfumeur Timbuktu

    This house was one of those I really wanted to test. Nothing better than starting with Timbuktu! This fragrance is quite good and really unique, in think! The scent is very good and complex scent. It´s bright, smooth and, in spite of being not strong, it lasted for about 15h. Unfortunately sillage and projection could be better (just about 2-3h). It´s kind of versatile. I´d say this is a good unisex scent, maybe a bit toward masculine side. And I smell quality on this!

    Like it a lot! I´d say I find a kind of mystery on this great woody fragrance! I wish I could give more, but sillage and projection are the letdown of this fragrance.

    Scent: 8.80
    Longevity: 9.20
    Sillage: 7.55
    Projection: 7
    Uniqueness: 8.85
    Versatiliy: 7.75
    Scent masculinity: 7.70
    --- Overall: 8.12

    Would I buy it? YES!!

    Johnny, don't underestimate the sillage of Timbuktu...it's more powerful than you think!

    I really enjoy reading this thread.

    Note to mods, Grant, whoever has this power:

    Can we do something about the impossibility of bumping your own thread? Johnny's got a great thread going, but until someone replies to it it continues to sink. Instead, every time he reviews a new scent it comes up in his previous reply in the form of an "edit."

    The same thing happened to me last year when I was updating an ongoing thread and it really killed its momentum.

    It's a shame because its threads where the author continues to update them that often involve a lot of hard work and detail, but because of this 'edit' feature, they can sink very quickly until they basically vanish.

    Reading with interest; there are some that I love on your list.

    But I have to ask - if Black Aoud gets only 9 for projection, what gets a 10? Then again, what's the difference between sillage and projection in your ratings?

    Hey, Buysblind!

    Maybe, but I must confess that I didn´t smell that much. Nevertheless, I love it.

    Thank you for your concern. Deadidol was already doing something in order to solve it. It´s quite annoying, really!

    But I have to ask - if Black Aoud gets only 9 for projection, what gets a 10? Then again, what's the difference between sillage and projection in your ratings?

    Hey, Kagey!

    Thank you for your words!

    Important question, you made! Ok, Black Aoud projected really good for about 6h (at least that was the time I could smell it). Sillage was enormous! Now, regarding the difference between them, and how I assess them, I assume sillage to be the trail lefted by the scent and is it "is still there", even if you left that place. As projection, I assume it to be the how much a fragrance projects as one being still.

    These two variables sometimes are tricky to me. Regarding projection, I take in account the "strenght" of it, how far it will project (needing someone´s feedback, which is hard and most times impossible to know), as the TIME it projects (or at least that my nose can smell it). Sillage, is easier, as you may guess.

    Your question makes a point and I´ll let you know why I gave that 9. I tested Black Aoud first on paper. Well, guys, it was like a nuclear bomb! The room was heavily "intoxicated" with the scent for more that 15h. This is a 10, to me! However, on my skin, it was not a nuclear bomb, but "just"really good and only for about 6h. That is why the reason for giving it a 9 and I must assess the behaviour of fragrance on my skin.

    Stay stuned!

    Ok, guys, time for the first Amouage of this second pack.

    -------->Amouage Lyric Man

    I´ll start by writing that the first Amouage scent I tested was Interlude man, as you must recall from seeing in Niche fragrance testing (samples) - pt1. Many expectations, mostly because of so good reviews about it. Unfortunately it turned to be a bit of a disappointment. Therefore, it was not among the best ones of the early pack testing. The opposite happen now. I was not having the highest expectations regarding Lyric Man as I saw many reviews saying it was way too feminine, ect. Guys, this is another league regarding quality! What a GREAT scent! I have to say that I agree it´s it not the most masculine scent but this fragrance is in fact VERY, VERY GOOD. I can see, however, this scent as being masculine enough! I smell real quality, here! Projected nicely for about 5-6 h, sillage is very good and the longevity was about 16-17h. I find this to be quite versatile as I think I´d used it in several occasions (work, casual, date, etc).

    Scent: 9.58
    Longevity: 9.55
    Sillage: 8.65
    Projection: 8.35
    Uniqueness: 8
    Versatiliy: 8.75
    Scent masculinity: 7.75
    --- Overall: 8.64

    Would I buy it? YES!!!

    Well, guys, time for Serge Lutens Arabie.

    -------->Serge Lutens Arabie

    An unique fragrance! Really! But this is not the type of fragrance to wear anytime or in any occaion. I got about 12-13h. Projection was nice for about 4h and sillage was very good, indeed. Personally, I do find it a very agreeable scent BUT nothing more than that! I see this scent leaning to the feminine side.

    Let´s go for another one:

    ----------->Le Labo Iris 39

    First, allow me to write that Le Labo is one of houses I love the most. The quality of the ingredients is awesome. So, I must state this Le Labo is an unique and high quality scent. Real natural. Le Labo keeps surprising me regarding this aspect. BUT, guys, overall, this fragrance was a disappointment.

    The opening of this fragrance makes me sick! Believe me! Harsh, very intrusive! I can´t see this as an unisex scent! WAY too feminine. The earthiness present is very realistic but the civet is kind of disagreeable, to me. The drydown is nice, however. Regarding projection, honestly it was no that good – between 2-3h. Sillage was moderate. I expect more in terms of longevity (about 9-10h). I can´t see this as a versatile fragrance. Do think, however, this could be an interesting scent on a lady during Spring.

    Scent: 6.75
    Longevity: 8.25
    Sillage: 7.75
    Projection: 7.25
    Uniqueness: 8.75
    Versatiliy: 6.5
    Scent masculinity: 4.25
    --- Overall: 7.07

    Would I buy it? No!

    Hi, guys!

    Today´s results:

    -----------> Tauer Lonestar Memories

    I do like this fragrance! Very much. Personally, I this there are some similarities it with LDDM, mostly in the opening. Although not so unique, It´s less intrusive, smoother and quite agreeable. I must say, however, that I prefer L´Air du Desert Marocain. On my skin the leather and vetiver are quite noticeable.

    In spite of being “lighter” than the latter, this fragrance is sill a “mini-beast”. Projection was 3 and a half hours. Sillage was quite good and I got about 12-13h.

    Scent: 8.22
    Longevity: 9
    Sillage: 8.45
    Projection:7.85
    Uniqueness: 7.90

    Next fragrance from Amouage, today.

    ------------> Amouage Jubilation

    A very good fragance, overall, although not so good as Lyric Man, in my opinion. Way better than Interlude, though. A masculine complex scent, no doubt! About 4h of projection, with nice sillage. Got about 11h as must say I expected more. Good versatility. One can see this is a "rich" and complex scent. I can really smell the cinnamon on my skin and strangely (also fortunately, as I don´t appreciate it too much) Oud is not too prominent.

    I must say I´m beginning to love this house, in spite of not having loved the first one I tested (Interlude). You can really smell quality in all of them. Looking forward to test the remaining one: Reflection.

    I sugest you to give a few more tries on Interlude before giving up. It shouldnt be the first Amouage to try. It develops more slowly and sooner than you expect it might become your favorite. A tricky one.

    Nice reviews, by the way. Lyric is one of my favorites, too. Although Interlude is my top1 from this house.

    Today we have Sycomore!

    ---------->Chanel Les Exclusifs Sycomore

    Must start by stating that this was far from being one of my choices to test, mostly because of being a woman´s fragrance. In fact, this is the first female scent to be tested by me. Honestly, I don´t find it that way. It can suite easily a man, also. Unisex, in my opinion. The scent is quite good, indeed.But this (the scent) and longevity (about 11h) are the strong aspects of it, in my opinion. The bad part? Projection. Sillage is kind of moderate, though. Regarding the first, I got about 2 and a half hours, which I find poor, as you can imagine. I think it´s farly versatile. Personally, I couldn´t smell violet, I must say.

    Another thing I can´t stop thinking is the similarities with Encre Noire…! Another comparison that was unavoidable to do, was FM´s Vetiver Extraordinaire. Although I find Sycomore´s “richier” regarding scent, I do find Vetiver Extraordinaire better regarding ingredients and to be also more masculine.

    Overall, a very interesting scent, but sadly, one more that can´t go up due (mostly) to poor projection.

    Scent: 8.35
    Longevity: 8.5
    Sillage: 7.65
    Projection: 6.85
    Uniqueness: 7.35
    Versatiliy: 7.85
    Scent masculinity: 7.5
    --- Overall: 7.73

    Would I buy it? Yes.
