    Default Another reformulation

I own a bottle of L'Air de Rien (Miller Harris) which I love; it is my favourite by this niche company. The dry out smells very strongly of Oakmoss and Nitromusk, and I was concerned that it may have been reformulated. Unfortunately I was right in my suspicions. I was inJohn Lewis on Wednesday and managed to avoid the sales assistant long enough to get a spray of the tester bottle of L'Air de Rien. On top note it is very similar to my vintage version (indeed my vintage version has a Top Note that has gone "off"). However after a day or so, the difference becomes very obvious. The latest version contains no Moss and no Nitromusk (to my nose). It has been reformulated; a good reformulation to be sure, but a reformulation never the less.

At least you have found a reformulation David that you can live with!

    Thanks for the info., David.
I noticed this thread whilst trying to find a recent thread about whether members buy products 'for' the dry down (which I haven't read yet) as my recent experience in sampling has been that the tendency seems to be towards becoming increasingly generic.

I had little experience with the scent.I tried it perhaps a couple of years ago and was underwhelmed. A fantastic top followed by seemingly nothing. Perhaps what I smelled was the reformulation, which would explain.

Could well be Cacio. I always loved the dry down which was dirty and mossy. I still have the two smelling strips, my vintage still smells of Moss and Nitromusk, the new version is fading away to very little. A great shame. The Top and Middle of the reformulation are good, but the Drydown is very poor. You just cannot replace Moss or Musk Ketone. I doubt if I will be buying this again.

Member teardrop advises that items from this line may be available at 25% below rrp at TKMaxx stores - the UK website only shows candles.

    Hi all.

Sorry to be dredging up an old thread.

Is there a way of distinguishing old from new ? Packaging etc. ?

    Thanks.

The bottles looked the same, although the newer version had a better spray mechanism. That is one of my complaints about reformulations, you can often not tell by the outward appearance.

    Thanks David.

Do you remember the old box by any chance ?

The old box is long gone I'm afraid. I bought it before I realised that I should keep my fragrances in the dark.

    Ah, that's a shame.

Thanks for your time David. I do appreciate it.

    Thanks.

The old box was an olive green color with their standard black pattern of I believe leaves/flowers printed on it. Have not seen the reformulated packaging.

    Thank you cazaubon.

On the Miller Harris website, the current box looks like my attachment - is this the same as the old box ?

    Thank you.

Looks very similar. The only difference between my old bottle and the new version was the spray mechanism. In my bottle you could unscrew the pump spray (and it does not work very well), in the new bottle it is fixed in place.

Thank you both David and cazaubon. Looks like I will need to find a seller who can tell me if the spray mechanism is removable or not.

    Thanks again.

Just reviving this thread to say that yes, indeed, this amazing scent has been reformulated, and not for the better. I have a bottle of both old and new, and the new is missing its lower register. The base notes are simply not there. The strange and wondrous mossy muskiness is gone, which to my mind was the point of the fragrance.

The two versions can be easily told apart because of the differences in box and bottle. The old has "Miller Harris Perfumer London" in a small rectangular cream-colored letter-box on the front and "l'air de rein" in a similar colored box at the bottom. The new version has "l'air de rein" in a much larger font written vertically down the entire length of the box/bottle.

Hope this helps anyone trying to source the vintage version--which is definitely worth the search. (If you're buying from online sources, be sure to ask the seller about the looks of the actual box, they often use photos of the older version in their ads, but are actually selling the newer version.)

Oh, and the post three posts up from this one that includes a photo, is the new/reformulated version with the vertical lettering.
