If Leather Oud literally smells like feces and has no negative reviews, then one must question the taste of those who have reviewed it. Are there actually people out there who want to smell like sh*t?

    This is Basenotes after all.

My take on it is that most of these seem to be scents that aren't that common, so it is mainly people who have read about them and actively sought them out because they sound appealing who post the reviews, which naturally increases the likelihood of a positive review.

In the case of Leather Oud, most would have been forewarned of the skanky aspect so it would mostly be skank lovers who sought it out.

Masterpiece! But, isn't fecal to me - harsh well tanned leather, yes, with a little bit of dirt, oud, saffron, it's better like that !

Thallium, Thallium Sport and Thallium Black. Three from the same line, and no negative views. Pretty good.

With only one negative review (and none in the past) out of total of more than 30, Esencia Loewe is also, in my opinion, "dangerously close" to the top performers and deservedly so.

Also by Loewe, another classic male fragrance in their lineup seems to have, as of now, absolutely no negative reviews whatsoever. Again, in my opinion, for a good reason.

Consulting with my comprehensive spreadsheet of what I own (fellow nerds understand), I believe the following are noteworthy along the lines of the OP/Ambre 114's (2001) stellar review performance numbers:

    Amouage - Homage Attar (2008) -- 30 reviews total (100%) / 26 (87%) positive / 4 (13%) neutral / 0 (0%) negative
    Cacheral - Nemo (1999disc.) -- 34 total / 31 (91%) pos / 2 (6%) neut / 1 (3%) neg
    CdG - Quarzazate (2002) -- 25 / 24 (96%) / 1 (4%) / 0 (0%)
    D&G - By Man (1998disc.) -- 53 / 48 (90%) / 3 (6%) / 2 (4%)
    Eau d'Italie -- Paestum Rose (2006) -- 27 / 25 (93%) / 2 (7%) / 0 (0%)
    Ungaro I (1991disc.) -- 33 / 28 (85%) / 5 (15%) / 0 (0%)
    Hermes - Terre d'Hermes parfum (2009) -- 35 / 31 (89%) / 3 (8%) / 1 (3%)
    Jean Patou - Patou Pour Homme (1980disc.) -- 41 / 36 (88%) / 4 (10%) / 1 (2%)
    MPG - Ambre Precieux (1988) -- 45 / 38 (84%) / 6 (13%) / 1 (2%)
    Montale - Blue Amber -- 38 / 32 (84%) / 5 (13%) / 1 (3%)
    Tiffany for Men (1989) -- 37 / 33 (89%) / 3 (8%) / 1 (3%)

After getting to know these 11 superstars quite well, 1 gets 5/5 stars, 2 get 4/5, and 8 get 3/5. If I were so motivated to write reviews, I'd probably give 8 positives and 2 negatives or neutrals depending on my mood, citing general overall dissatisfaction after considering scent, price, difficulty to obtain, current availability of more economical and satisfying alternatives, etc. To me there's not much difference between the yellow/neutral and red/negative. Sure, both categories represent degrees of dissatisfaction but with such things so subjective I don't bother splitting hairs.

As for Ambre 114, it sure sounds like one of the better ambers. Will I ever try it? Don't know. I've got hundreds of bottles as it is. Plenty get 4 and 5 stars. Some are outstanding ambers, yet I don't reach for these ambers that much.

    Hahaha.

My take out of this thread is not only to identify scents with no negative reviews but also ultimately find exceptional scents. When I read reviews on Basenotes, things I take into considerations are the number of reviews (total reviews, neutral, negative), the reviewers (I kinda know whom I have similar style), years the scent released, price of the scent, etc.

So when I compare a scent with 10-0-0 and a scent with 49-5-3, which one I would give more credibility? Only speaking for myself, I am more comfortable blind buying the 49-5-3 scent.

How about a scent with 15-0-0 versus 49-5-3? I would again choose the 49-5-3 to blind buy because I would give more weight to the total number of reviewers (in this case 57 reviewers, 3 negative versus 15 reviewers, 0 negative).

Therefore a scent with zero negative and low number reviews is less important to me in the above cases.

I like to take into account of price as one of my criteria because I feel that price is also a contributing factor for thumbs up or down when reviewed. I think reviewers are more forgiving for a cheaper scent compared to a more expensive one, IMO.

So this whole exercise is nothing absolute but as subjective as the scent itself.

BTW, if you would like to compare how math is taught in my country, please refer to the ranking of international mathematical olympiad

Sure, I agree with a lot of what you're saying.
But, on the other hand, what do you do with very newly released or very hard-to-find scents? Especially the latter tend to get reviewed by people whose knowledge and taste in fragrances are more... hmm... advanced than those of many who might do the 246th review of whatever mainstream thing... I'd say zero negative and low number informed reviews counts at least as much to me as a lot of uninformed opinions, even if very few of them are negative...
But, of course, you're right, it's a subjective thing. A review is always subjective, and a lot of reviews are a lot of subjectivity. But, subjectivity comes in different qualities...

Bois des Iles is 52-5-0. Hard to beat.

Frankly, I don't think that much of the Les Exclusifs version; it's surprisingly thin, which also makes the sweet and medicinal sandalwood/floral accord in the beginning a bit overbearing. That creamy sandalwood can still be found in the far drydown, but in tiny amounts. In my view the current Egoiste is deeper and overall more satisfying sandalwood. But... I would still give it a neutral.

Another to add to the list of candidates is Hasu-no-Hana by Grossmith (7 positives, no negatives or neutrals). I have had it on my wish list for a long time but it's relatively lofty price has kept me at bay... One of the best things I have ever sniffed for sure, especially on a lady (though I wear it too).
