Default In Search of most divine Incense

Last night I came upon a sample of Jovoy's divine La Liturgie des Heures. I posted a review in my "Diptyque, Jovoy, Slumberhouse Sniff-Fest" (plus Grossmith) thread, only to learn that incense is a category of perfume. Others were suggested: Avignon, Full Incense, L'Air du Desert Marocain (which I already love) and something from Bohemian Spice? Now I'm in search of beautiful incense perfumes.

What is your favorite? Which ones should I try?

I'll gather samples and do a sniff-fest to find the one that takes my breath away.

We just had a pretty exhaustive discussion of incense in MFD, you might want to read through it, lots of recommendations:

    http://www.basenotes.net/threads/372...recommendation

My current favorites, in no order: Timbuktu, Bois D'Armenie, Vikt, Black Afgano
Behemoth cut a slice of pineapple, salted it, peppered it, ate it, and then tossed off a second glass of alcohol so dashingly that everyone applauded.

That thread has too many hormones for my taste.

    Incense
in perfumery it's a huge thing, usually not the protagonist, but part of lots of perfumes, specially spicy, oriental, balsamic, ... and something really important historically in many cultures across the globe.

I think that by divine, you already found the one, LADDM is a masterpiece, yet not what we usually think as incense perfume, it has a lot of stuff going on that make it that special. **** maybe even 5/5

A similar one would be Amber Absolute, the driest amber I smelled, it's like burning incense sticks. ****

Bohemian Spice is from April Aromatics, it's a spicy earthy patchouli with incense, quite heavy yet linear. ****
Another spicy incense is Bois d'Encens, but it dries down to just incense rather quickly. It's really nice though. ***
Also is Serge Noire, lots of clove, below average longevity. ***
And Black Tourmaline, focusing on pepper and with a great smokey/burnt vibe (moss-oud-leather). ***

If you like opopanax, Calling All Angels is interesting, complex and really dirty. ***

Usually the reference incense is Avignon, Full Incense it's a better clone with more body/life/longevity. ***

We could classify Norne as a coniferus incense, like being in a forest, genius but borderline unwearable. ***

Casbah has a kind of citrusy vibe (angelica) along with spices and some woods, quite good. ***

In a similar vein we have Heliotrope by Durbano, more interesting/less conventional, not so incensy. ***

CDG 2 Man, the most liturgical thing I tried so far, the aldehydes give it a realistic waxy aura like a church with dozens of candles and some incense sticks burning everyday for decades. Too bad that effect lasts around 3 hours or so and then it becomes rather dull. Must try anyway for the awesome journey. ***
Usually compared to that one is Gucci PH ('I','1'), to me it feels cheap side by side, and the papyrus ruins it (it actually ruins everything for me). **

Sahara Noir also sports papyrus, this time it's not as off-putting but was somewhat messy, like the Amouage's. **

Absolue pour le Soir dries down too sweet and loses quickly all the dirtiness and incense, unremarkable. **

Encens Mythique D'Orient has too much neroli/orange blossom or the likes, smells cheaper than it actually is. **

In contrast, Profumum's Olibanum it's a great example of how to use orange blossom with incense: it needs some woods! ***

My experience with Annick Goutal's Ambre Fetiche and Encens Flamboyant was dissapointing, extremely dry/grey vibes, the complete opposite of what I understand as perfume, both unwearable for me. **

I was supposed to like Incensi because of the tolu, but the mixture along with galbanum, opopanax and styrax makes a weird accord. **

Loewe 7 it's awful, cheap plasticky vibe with gross ingredients. **
For a better plasticky ones, Cardinal and Incense Extreme, very similar but better quality, still not my thing. **

(I should add - in my opinion)...

The "Emperor" in this genre is Norma Kamali incense - monster longevity, projection & waaaaaay ahead of almost every other incense I either own or have sampled.

Only downside - sold only at NK website & in 500ml sizes; very hard to find, not sure if the website currently lists this as available.

You can find many other very good incense based fragrances from the 2 threads that were running in the last week or so...

    Many great suggestions already.
Hedonist says that Sahara Noir smells exactly like smoked frankincense, so it is a must try as a reference. I second CDG2 man, an avantgarde incense with aldehydes which smells churchy yet manages to avoid the usual stereotypes. And Tauer Incense rose has a nice fizz that also distinguish it from straightforward ones.

Do you mean divine in a theological or a hedonistic way? Not a spurious question when incense is concerned

I must admit that Kamali's is awe-inspiring on both counts. Shame I only have two mls. The pioneering CdG series is a must and I also love Villoresi's and Timbuktu. Creed's Angelique Encense was great and distinctive. Many other greats have been named.

Ooft! There are some terrific suggestions here. I hope that you try loads of them then report back!

Anyway, for my tuppence worth. Another vote for Sahara Noir. It's great. My colleague has it and really it wears beautifully. If one could own just one frankincense fragrance this could be the one! Andy Tauer's Incense Extreme is another Frankincense powerhouse which, like Sahara Noir, is fairly linear but very satisfying. Away from the uber-incense and towards something different, we have Cloon Keen Atelier Terre de L'Encens. It's lighter, contemporary interpretation of incense. Very nice. For something different again, you could look at Maria Candida Gentile's work with frankincense, such as Exultat, or Sideris, they are floaty clouds, bit sweeter and, well, not powdery as such but, well, kinda floaty cloudy.

Excellent choices dear Foustie, i love Terre de l'Encense, would add for instance Homage, Encense Flamboyant, Kyoto, Norma Kamali, Villoresi Incensi, Shaal Nur, Casbah Piguet but we have dozens of fantastic solutions.

Some perfumes are blends of resins like the catholic church renditioning in Avignon which is frankinsense plus other things.

    Sahara noir
    Bois d'Encens

    Somali incense:
    La fumee

    Here's the thing though ScentFan.
The majority list the incense note as 'incense' which is like listing Pepsi, whiskey, Apple juice & water 'liquid'. Not very helpful huh?
Then there appears to be a plethora of lab-made generic incense aromachemical note that smells of incense, nondescript mass market incense.
Then, a lot of them have incense & other strong & similar-in-nature notes mixed the incense note (mostly resins like labdanum or benzoin). This makes it difficult to make our which type of incense it's based.

The Amouage ones are primarily a frankincense/myrrh accord.
    Amouage Epic Man
    Amouage Homage
    Amouage Ubar

    Armani/Prive Bois d’Encens - frankincense (dominant)

Comme des Garcons 2 Man (accord +a good amount of frankincense)
Comme des Garcons Series 3 Incense – Avignon (frankincense + other resins)

Guerlain Myrrhe & Delires - primarily myrrh

Guerlain Encens Mythique D’Orient (lab made incense aromachemical but smells divine)

Guerlain L’Art et La Matiere Bois d’Armenie (this one is pretty popular, it contains benzoin (styrax) as per internet searches ).

    L’Artisan Dzongkha (accord)
    L’Artisan Timbuktu (accord)

    Montale Full Incense (frankincense -dominant)
Naomi Goodsir, Bois d’Ascese (Somali incense -dominant)

Nasomatto Black Afgano (frankly I don't get too much incense)

Norma Kamali Incense (80% frankincense - 20% myrrh)

    Profumum Olibanum (frankincense -dominant)
Robert Piguet Casbah (look up Avignon)
    Serge Lutens Serge Noir (accord)

Tauer L’Air du Desert Morocain (accord)
Tauer Perfumes Incense Extreme EdP (frankincense + a bit of something else)

Tom Ford Sahara Noir (frankincense - very dominant)

    Matriarch's Blackbird

Thanks, deadidol. I have those, except for the Matriarch and Knive. Will add. Not sure how I got all the Slumberhouses in the Incense box, either. Should only Norne and Vikt be on there?

  34. #34

Well, neither Norne or Vikt are incense fragrances per se. Incense is a component, but it's mild in both. Compared to dedicated incense scents, I wouldn't file either that way. Norne's a coniferous forest floor / aromatic scent and Vikt is more of an oriental / oud scent.

Hey there, ScentFan. I really don't have tons of opinions or suggestions when it comes to incense fragrances, but I wanted to pop in to make sure you have De Profundis on your list, which most definitely *is* an incense scent (described by Lutens himself as "the scent of incense and chrysanthemums") and one of the most beautiful I've ever come across. Although it's been described over and over as melancholy and mournful, I think that's got to be more about marketing and the power of suggestion than the actual fragrance. It is evocative, but there's nothing morose about it, imo - I find it to be serene, calming and peaceful. I've found I really love it on cool, dark nights, and wore it several times during the holidays; it was absolutely perfect for Christmas Eve.
Science is not only compatible with spirituality, it is a profound source of spirituality. When we recognize our place in an immensity of light-years and in the passage of ages, when we grasp the intricacy, beauty, and subtlety of life, then that soaring feeling, that sense of elation and humility combined, is surely spiritual. ..Carl Sagan

I'd argue with you on Memoir. It has absinthe for sure, but incense on my skin is far and away the main note. It strikes me as how Kyoto (another awesome one) is, with another supporting note (absinthe in Memoir and Cypress in Kyoto) but with incense as the main note.

If Serge Noir isn't on the list... It's rather a startling take on incense, and really wonderful.

Another thumbs up for La Fumee.

Memoir Man certainly does have incense but the wormwood and mint are what it's about for the first hour or so.

Thanks, hedonist222 and to all for the suggestions. I looked up incense accord and now see why I smell incense in perfumes that have no frankincense, myrhh, etc. Below is what I could get my hands on. I'll include those 2 Slumberhouses just for comparison. deadidol, the Matriarch site isn't taking orders. I emailed them, though, so fingers crossed. Their Blackbird sounds interesting. Taking a break from educating my nose to resume the fun of sniffing new scents.

As it happens, Yasmin (from the Jasmin Sniff-Fest thread), now a sultana, and her sultan, Walad, are honeymooning on the island of Cyprus, where an ancient perfume factory, perhaps the oldest, has been found. Walad has taken heed of his forbear's advice, expressed in the poem "Stay Close, My Heart", by Rumi:

    Stay close, my heart, to the one who knows your ways;
Come into the shade of the tree that always has fresh flowers.
Don't stroll idly through the bazaar of the perfume-markers ...

To prevent that, as they traveled from Persia to Cyprus, Walad collected incense perfumes to entertain the nose of his new bride, loading up in Baghdad and Damascus. Each day on the beach, they lounge in their great tent, laid with precious rugs, hung with sheer, colorful fabrics, cushioned with pillows. They are unaware of being watched from offshore.

Blackbird by House of Matriarch. "Ah, Walad," she says. "If this perfume is incense, then I wish to be the censer in which it burns." Me, too. This is a magical scent, full of haunting woods, and nothing to bother my nose. It's hard to pick up specific ingredients, they're blended so well. Blackbird reeks of quality and sophistication. First one out of the bag and I've got to buy it! Somehow this perfume manages both depth, richness and the kind of headiness I associate with florals. Must find out what's in it: ""hundreds of exotic natural aromas, NW conifers, Pugeot Sound seaweed, black leather, rare oud and cannabis." Whatever it contains, this is an incredible perfume! On my skin, it's delicious. Somehow HOM has managed incense with zero bite. Can't wait to have a suitable occasion to wear this: a bacchanal, a coronation, the tumbling of the walls of Jericho …that sort of thing. HOM's website says Blackbird was named "sexiest scent" at the International Artisan Fragrance Awards in 2012. Indeed it is. It’s divine. Smelling it, Walad forbids his bride, Yasmin, to wear it around anyone but him.

    One more b4 meditation.

Bois d'Ascese by Naomi Goodsir. “Oh, Walad,” Yasmin says. “This one is nice, too.” He replies, “Yes, but do you love it?” Yasmin can’t decide. She is still thinking about Blackbird. In its top notes, this one has more bite. She smells spice and a cedary note, but also fresh, airy notes, Looking it up on LuckyScent: tobacco, whiskey, cinnamon, amber, cistus labdanum, oakmoss, smoked cade wood, Somalian incense. Yet Fragrantica calls it an Oriental Woody. I thought oriental meant flowers. They’re probably in there because, in a way, this has a prettiness Blackbird doesn’t. Walad asks, “Would you prefer I say you’re pretty, or that you’re divine?” Yasmin replies, “Both, I think." So do I. This also goes on the buy list! Wish I had a sultan. Heck, maybe I do.

From the sea, a creature watches Yasmin and Walad, hating her and falling in love with him.

    More sniffs to come.

Oh, ScentFan, thank you for another tale of Yasmin! You and Yasmin increased my collection by four bottles with the Jasmine sniff-fest and I can see my incense purchases multiplying too, as a Blackbird sample is in the shopping cart already.

Waiting with bated breath for more, and more clues about who or what is spying on Yasmin and her Sultan.

Will do, insomniac. Glad you're enjoying Yasmin, foxbins. As to the buying, you're not by yourself! A couple more before bedtime.

Yasmin and Walad lay side-by-side in their tent holding hands, watching the moon cast a silver path on the Mediterranean. They have not yet consummated their marriage. Yasmin is shy and afraid. Walad would rather die than hurt her. They are taking time to become friends.

Serge Noir by Serge Lutens. Per Fragrantica, this oriental features: patchouli, cinnamon, amber, woody notes, incense, clove, spices and ebony wood. Yasmin smells it and says, "I can barely detect it compared to the first two." Walad replies, "This one takes time to build." She huffs impatiently. "Well, is it a scent or not?" He takes it from her. "Yes, and a very elegant one." She is still sniffing her hand. "Too refined to do anything as crass as smell, I suppose." Walad, inflamed by her pouting lips, rises and walks to the ocean. The water stirs, or does he imagine it? "Oh, great ocean," he whispers. "How long must I wait to hold my love in my arms?" Once more the water stirs. His imagination again, or does he see a lovely shape shimmer in the moonlight's silvery path? Impossible. He returns to the tent, thinking of what new scent might rouse his Yasmin. He picks one and takes it to her

Lorenzo Villoresi Incensi. "What is this, cabbages?" she asks. Walad flushes and smells it. Not cabbages, of course, but a dominant vetiver-like note. Looking it up: green notes, resins, galbanum, apple, lemon and bergamot in its top. A heart is created of flowers and spices: cinnamon, ginger, mimose, pepper and labdanum, whereas base notes introduce resins and woody accords: benzoin, incense, myrrh, styrax, tolu balm, opopponax and sandalwood. He finds the perfume pleasant, but realizes that without the florals shining through or the sandalwood asserting itself, the astringent notes may not be beautiful to her. Once again, Yasmin lies down with her back to him. Walad glances at the ocean, makes sure a member of his personal guard is standing watch, then lies down on the other side of the tent.

Great to see another intriguing story, ScentFan! Blackbird does sound awesome...

BTW, l think "oriental" usually means it has a base of amber, rather than pertaining to flowers.

Thanks, teardrop. Yes, Blackbird is a total wow, Ipp.

Late in the night, Walad hears a sound. Rising from his cushions, he sees Yasmin is still asleep. He walks out of the tent and discovers so is the guard. Something is drawing Walad to the shore. He sees nothing in the water because the moon is behind clouds. Suddenly they part and in the pale light, Walad sees an incredible sight, a woman rising from the depths, water streaming from her hair, her feet on a large oyster shell. She is the most beautiful woman he has ever seen. Not believing his eyes, he asks, "Who are you." She says, "I am Aphrodite." He frowns, then remembers legend says Cyprus is her island. "I didn't think you were real," he says. "To the Greeks I was. They wanted their Gods on the ground." He wonders why she has come and, reading his mind, she answers. "I prefer you stop calling things other than me divine." She must have heard them talking about Blackbird. Aphrodite descends, leaving Walad full of woe to have seen the Goddess of Love. He wants to dive into the ocean to find and posses her. Instead, he goes back to his tent, wakes the sleeping guard, and does not look at Yasmin as he lies down far from her.

Casbah by Robert Piguet. Unable to sleep, Walad sniffs from one of his many vials, thinking: this is a manly scent I should wear for Yasmin. It has no bite so she will enjoy it and it won't make her sneeze. I remember what's in it: angelica, nutmeg and black pepper; middle notes are incense, tobacco and orris root; base notes are vetiver and cedar. Yasmin may already be familiar with angelica, commonly used for women's concerns. I like the incense, the tobacco, it is an accomplished perfume suitable for a sultan. Forcing his thoughts to stay on Yasmin, Walad sleeps and dreams of Aphrodite.

Amouage Ubar. As the sun rises, Yasmin wakes and looks out toward the water, feeling afraid for no reason. Walad is still asleep. To calm herself, she reaches for one of his vials and sniffs. "Ah, florals. This is surely for a woman." Going on the Internet...ah, no...picking up a scroll describing scents she learns the ingredients: Top notes are tangerine, orange, litsea cubeba and violet leaf; middle notes are jasmine, orange blossom, ylang-ylang, tuberose, freesia, lily-of-the-valley and palisander rosewood; base notes are sandalwood, vanilla, patchouli, vetiver, copahu balm and black amber. There is no incense. Walad must have included it by mistake. It is quite a nice perfume, but not pretty enough for her, nor powerful enough for him. She will give it to her maid, Diba, who is in the next tent. Diba has a secret love whose name she won't reveal. Perhaps this fragrance will make him notice her.

Having been prevailed upon by Aphrodite, Neptune rises from the ocean. Time to create some earthly mischief. Invisibly he enters the tent of the maid, Diba, and finding her asleep, takes the form of Walad and happily begins to deflower her. She wakes and starts to scream then, seeing the face of Walad, the one she secretly loves, is overjoyed.

I love incense fragrances and there are some wonderful incenses listed here and some that I have put on my 'want' list. A couple that aren't mentioned here that I really like are Puredistance Black - I don't know if that's been released yet. I won a pre-release sample and it's phenomenal, so keep on the look-out for that one. Another is Andrea Maack Coal, in fact I'm wearing this one today, great penetrating type of fragrance, oh, and another is Titziana Tirenzi Ecstasy, really great. A beautiful vintage incense is Cartier Panthere. And lastly is Le Labo Cuir 28 - penetrating burning vetiver.

You have to ignore the "oud" in it because there is not much in the fragrance and quickly fades away. I am not an incense fan, but if I have to pick one, it will be this.

It's on my incense sniff list and I'm optimistic. I've only smelled one by Killian, but I really liked it.

Yasmin and Walad cross their arms and stare at me. Together they say, “Well, how are you going to get us out of this one?” I don’t know, I reply. You’re on Aphrodite’s Island and the Greek gods were always disguising themselves and seducing women at every turn. It just popped into my head. “But I’m the hero!” Walad complains, “and Diba is innocent.” I know, I know, I say. I’ll think of something. How about this?

The guard, Firuz, wakes from his on-duty catnap into a nightmare. Can it be he sees his master, Walad, leaving Diba's tent? ["This is not improving things!" Walad and Yasmin complain.] Firuz rubs his eyes and looks again. No one is there. Perhaps he was wrong. Quietly he goes to Diba's tent and peeks in. She lay stretching, smiling, her clothes in disarray. Oh, Allah! Walad has seduced her! Firuz had planned to marry Diba, if she would have him. Now he is betrayed and so is his poor sultana, Yasmin. As for Diba, she has endangered herself. According to tradition, she should be stoned by male relatives at once! Yet how can Firuz cause her death by reporting her? Then he remembers he'd need two witnesses and sighs in relief. Fortunately, her family’s not here, anyway. Disconsolate, yearning for revenge on the sultan he’s always loved and trusted, Firuz returns to guard duty at his master's tent and listens.

Dans Tes Bras by Frederick Malle. Walad says, “Yesterday, one of our merchants visited the town of Saks Fifth Avenue and bought this." Yasmin sniffs it. “I’m sure it’s very nice, but my heart is distracted. I fear unseen doom awaits us.” Walad replies. “I feel the same. I think it has to do with the ocean.” He sniffs the perfume as well. “What does the name mean?” Yasmin asks. “In your arms,” he replies. She flushes. At her pretty blush, the sight of Aphrodite flees Walad's mind. [Now that's more like it!] He tells his beautiful bride, “I think this perfume is meant to smell like skin after an ocean swim.” Yasmin says, “Well, let’s go.” Walad grabs her arm. “No, let’s stay away from the ocean! Outside the tent, Firuz stares at the water, wondering what his sultan and sultana fear. Ingredients: heliotrope, jasmine, woodsy notes, patchouli, pine tree, cashmeran, sandalwood, musk, incense and violet. According to the website, it is meant to be a skin scent. Since I already have skin that smells like itself, I won't be buying this.

“But Walad,” Yasmin cries. “What is this other Frederick Malle in the bag?” She pulls out En Passant, sprays it on and swoons. “But it is not in the incense genre,” Walad points out. “I don’t care. Please, Walad, have your merchants buy this for me.” I place an order, too, for this beautiful, feminine floral that has lilac at its center along with, apparently, cucumber, green notes and wheat. Yasmin and I can’t stop sniffing it.

Tauer Incense Extreme. Two sniffs and Yasmin and I choke. Trying again. This has incense all right. Compared to Blackbird and Bois d’Ascese, Yasmin’s favorites so far, and mine, this perfume’s tobacco, leather, spice and incense are assertive. Ingredients: Incense, touch of spices, powdery orris, cedarwood, ambergris, frankincense. Luckyscent says this one means to push the boundaries and it does. I was expecting to sneeze any second, but so far I haven’t. Something almost lemony appeals. If you’re a lover of strong incense, give this a try.

    Turning in.

“What?” Yasmin, Walad and Firuz all look at me. “You’re leaving us in limbo?”

Let me sleep on it, okay,? I reply.

Anxiously, they search the ocean waves.

One that hasn't been mentioned, surprisingly, is L'Artisan's Passage d'Enfer - is it hedonistic divine? Maybe not, but for those who like the heady smell of lilies will like this fragrance with a strongly evident but more transparent incense component.
