Is it a good fragrance if you're hanging out with a girl?

My GF's impression was, "weird, but I like it". I feel the same. It's unique. I get a strange dill note from it, and not a whole lot of sandalwood. Smells like more of a leather frag to me. Le Labo seems to have a habit of misnaming their fragrances, but perhaps I'm not familiar with the type of sandalwood used in this one.

I like this one a lot, it's my SOTD in fact. It's well blended and the specific notes are hard to decipher for me. It is always very sharply wood, either Sandalwood or cedar. I get a bit of peppermint, though it's not listed in the "official" notes. One of the main notes is apparently papyrus, which could be what I am interpreting as peppermint. It's a projection and longevity bomb. I've never smelled anything quite like it, especially any sandalwood fragrance.

This is actually one of my wife's favorites. But go light on the trigger.

My wife and I were smelling it together, and she liked it. But she was relieved when I settled on Coco Noir, because were were buying fragrances for each other, and Santal 33 is not cheap - even compared to Chanel.

Yep, it's a nice scent, and very hard to pin down. I'm a fan of Aramis, Kouros, and the like, but I haven't come across one that can overwhelm like Santal 33. Even the two aforementioned "power" frags calm down after a while. S33 projects for hours and hours, in pretty linear fashion.

I got weird, but something about it turns me off. definitely agree that I don't get much sandalwood. Maybe it was that dill note that I found a bit stomach turning. It didn't give me the impression of being the sort of scent that people refer to when discussing scents that are popular with the opposite sex, so I'm not sure I'd describe it as a safe scent in that regard.

Never got the infamous "dill note" that some folks tend to get; but it's a keeper in my wardrobe. Gotten plenty of compliments, but as stated earlier in the thread, go light on the trigger.

Worth sampling if you've not before purchasing... that's how I got introduced to it.

I got a papyrus note too and very little sandalwood. I wouldn't say it's anything bad, but certainly not one that I would go beyond sniffing in store.

Women like this fragrance a lot. It's very floral and spicy it's in the same area as santal blush with its use of Australian sandalwood. It's a little femme, but it smells pretty good

I never think about my fragrance in relation to hanging out with someone. With that said, Santal 33 and Patchouli 24 are by far my favorite LeLabos.

I really liked this one but not so much for the sandalwood itself which, I agree, is not as obvious as say Villoresi 'Sandalo'. It brought back very distinct memories of holidays in Spain with my parents when I was young and the smell of souvenir shops where they sold lots of wooden items often teamed with leather. Its one of the few fragrances so far to have triggered such specific memories for me and for that reason alone its on my Wish List.

Admittedly, that doesn't help with the 'hanging out with girls' question but I think its a great scent.

Initially I didn't like the coconut twist to the sandalwood, but the deep woodiness of the blend is persistent. It turns out that "coconut" is short lived and Santal 33 has great sillage and is very noticeable by others. I don't know if its papyrus, gaiac or what but I like the warm deep glow of it. An often complimented fragrance when I wear it. It is one of my favorites from Le Labo (Cuir, Rose, Vetiver, Santal, Gaiac, Patchouli) and I am happy to have a bottle!

    It's called Santal not Mysore.
    Why is it misnamed?

I happen to like the Santal. Very woody. I have the perfume oil, which lasts a long time.

Coming out of the woodwork on this thread, but I feel a strong need to say that Santal 33 is absolutely freaking amazing.

I finally got myself to pick up a bottle as I've been in a major Le labo phase as of late and I can't say enough great things about it. Woody, dusty, urban/hipster kind of scent.

Cannot be compared to other sandalwood fragrances, that's for certain. For instance, MPG Santal noble which I absolutely cannot stand. This is a completely different, MODERN take on sandalwood if I may

Last word on performance - unbelievable. One spray to the base of the neck is highly recommended approach to this scent. It works magic.

Strong, angular Australian Sandalwood and a gel like papyrus and leather.
For those that have not tried some of the "reference" sandalwood out there this may appeal.
Its quite strong, but the "dill pickle" comments will be frequent.
To me its not smooth like expected, but stands on its own merits.
Personally im not a big fan of it, my 4ml may last a lifetime considering 1/2 spray is enough to singe.
If you like Australian Sandalwood in a gourmand capacity, look at Bond No. 9's I Love New York for All, I get a lot of sharp sandalwood in it, rarely mentioned.

I recently tried most of the LeLabo line. Not a single home run. I have a broad range of santals. This is iris and cedar and synth sandlewood. Would it be moderately pleasant if "hanging out with a girl." Sure. Is it captivating? No. Masculine? No.

I've tried a few of the Le Labo fragrances and this one was one of my favorites (along with Poivre 23).

Pardon for derailing this thread a little bit, but... My only complaint is the way they mix the ingredients in the store for you, while you wait... It seems to be producing strong variations between each bottle. I guess it's a hit and miss, depending on who mixes things, how accurate they are, and whether they pay close attention to the proportions - or not at all. It's perhaps less noticeable in Santal 33 (the three different bottles I've experienced were reasonably close), but I was terribly disappointed in Poivre 23. I have one decant that has an amazing sparky quality, almost like champagne, it makes your nose tingle if you sniff it up-close. But the other two bottles I've tried, and a decant I bought from another BN member, were a disappointment - completely flat, devoid of soul or any vibrance to speak of. Flat and boring. If it wasn't for the first decant I got I would have never liked Poivre 23, so I'm *hoping* that one day when I'm in San Francisco and stop by the Le Labo boutique, they can make me the version I have in the original decant I bought couple years ago. I should perhaps bring it with me, so they know what I'm talking about, as I most certainly would be very disappointed if they mixed up a bottle of that flat, flaccid, boring mixture I've experienced, from three different sources. :-( The sparkly, vibrant one - I'd buy at least two bottles every year for the rest of my life, it is that good... the flat/boring version - I wouldn't bother with at all.

In short - as good as Le Labo may be, I'm turned off by the in-store mixing process, and the variance it generates. It's a bad (HORRIBLE!) gimmick that does not work for me at all. When I find a fragrance I like, I want to know that each and every bottle I buy will be the same fragrance, same ingredients, same composition, same overall feel. I don't like the "Aventus batch variations" approach to perfumery - life's too short to spend any time of it hunting down "just the right batch." I understand reformulations due to IFRA regulations, but at least in those cases one can still hunt down vintage bottles, but to have such drastic changes from one bottle to another, in current formulation, is just bad business that I will not play into.

Santal 33 is absolutely superb smelling, IMO. The perfumer, Frank Voelkl is one of the best in the business and the nose behind most of the other Le Labo compositions I love (Ylang 49 and Iris 39), and of course his non-Le Labo masterpiece, Javanese Patchouli by Zegna. I love pretty much everything he has composed to date, and Santal 33 is one of his best.
