Default What is your favourite Oud?

    Hey guys!

I haven't been on this forum for quite a while, been trying to save and not spend so thought it best to stay away from temptation! I'm back (for now) so apologise if this has already been asked a bunch of times over the past few months. The question I have is what in your opinion is the best Oud or Oud based fragrance on the market right now? I'm hoping to purchase one soon and want to know what out there is worth trying.

    Cheers!
Creed Aventus lid wanted: please pm if you can help

One I personally like is Oud Pur Oriental by Montale but there are so many good ones.

So many good ones, I agree. I love Creed's royal oud, and several by Montale.
Is the juice worth the squeeze?

I should not even respond to this post, since my experience of oud frags is limited...but you must try Mona di Orio's OUD if you can. This is the best fragrance I own (a small 5MM bottle), and I would commit a felony to add a full bottle to my collection, it's that good. Top-notch, easily unisex.

Dior Leather Oud is probably my favorite.

If you want to try real oud you can try places like AgarAura or Feeloud. My experience with pure oud oil is a little limited I own 5 bottles and a few samples.

Best Dirty oud - Leather Oud

Best Rose Oud - Oud Ispahan

Best Western Style Oud - Mona di Orio Oud, it is Osmanthus Oud.

But nothing can beat natural pure oud oil, in depth and complexity.

    For me,

Leather Oud -- one of the greatest, most divisive stinkers available
Real Oud Feral -- one of the few oud fragrances that actually contains oud
Slumberhouse Vikt -- this does many things, but oud is one of them
MdO Oud -- probably my favorite straight-up oud

Have also recently had the chance to dig on:
Ensar Oud Assam Organic and Purple Dervish

    They're very different.

Alright then, we may as well club galbanum & vetiver and oppoponax & benzoin.

Hedonist, several times I've seen you make this distinction between oud oil and oud wood. I've always declined to inquire lest I appear stupid, but are you saying that perfumers actually put wood into their perfume? My elementary understanding of the perfume-making process has always been: harvest the natural resource, press or distill said resource, use the extract in perfume.

Amazingly, what I get out of it is almost like genuine smell of wet fall leaves... Never experienced any scents like that.

All of the oils I have tried from these two artisans have been excellent, some more my style than others, but all heavenly in their own rights. My Assam Organic had a dry, hazy quality initially but after aging for about a year it exhibits much more of the dark fruit notes while still being distinctively Hindi, love it.

Oud mixed, Amouage Badr Al Badour, perfectly balanced attar IMO.

Modern perfumery, Clive Christian C(best), M7, by Kilian Musk Oud, MFK ouds, AdP Oud, Habit Rouge EDP, Montale Dark Oud and on a lighter note Creed Royal Oud.

When someone asks about oud, I assume they are talking about the oud oil itself. Favorite Oud is one of these pure oud oils: Kyara Koutan, Borneo Kemenyan, Kencana or Royal Assam. All of the recent top shelf oud oils released by Agar Aura or Ensars Oud are excellent. They are different from blended perfumes that may have oud or agarwood oil in them, and I like these as much as oud, but for their artistry as a perfume.

This notion has been largely replaces by synthetics.
Even real oud note is now forbidden by IFRA, though you would still be able
To find it in middle eastern creations.

    IMHO:
The most divine oud creation is by the professor Roja Dove: Roja Dove Oud.
The best and closest to real oud: Killian Pure oud. This is my favorite as well
The best western oud creation: Oud Shamash by The Different Company

    To answer the above queries:

    What method used is irrelevant.

Whether its orange and they use real orange essential oil or they use a fully synthetic aromachemical that smells like the real thing is not relevant.

My point is that there are two ouds.

In Arabic we either say Oud oil or Oud. The former is self explanatory whilst the latter refers to the act of fumigating oud wood.

They are different from blended perfumes that may have oud or agarwood oil in them, and I like these as much as oud, but for their artistry as a perfume.
I used to assume the same.
But only because , at the time, 99.9% of oud based perfumes were based on oud oil.

But then when Leather Oud & Oud Ispahan were released it changed everything.

In fact they reminded me that the Onde Mystere by Giorgio Armani was actually based on Oud wood not oud oil.

I think Jo Malone's Oud & Bergamot is based on it.

    I just checked JoMalone.com

There is a big fat chunk of oud wood as the backdrop to the perfume & the following description:

Precious oud, reframed. The mysterious, smoky character of this revered wood, central to Middle Eastern fragrance traditions, radiates with the clarity of crisp bergamot and an orange granite accord. Hypnotic. Alluring.
I can now think of 4 perfumes (Leather Oud, Oud Ispahan, Onde Mystere & Oud & Bergamot) that are based on Oud Wood not Oud Oil.

I should probably start an awareness thread on this because the oil & wood smell vastly different from each other.

Thanks for the reply Hedonist, just trying to gain a better understanding. I'm afraid, however, that I still don't understand the difference. You said oud oil is self-explanatory- I agree. Then you said "oud" is the process of fumigating oud wood. What exactly do you mean by "fumigating?" Spraying with an aeroslized chemical? Steaming? Isn't that just a another process to extract the oil from the wood?

My favorite is probably Leather Oud, which as Hedonist correctly points out uses a note of burning agarwood, which personally I recognize from high-quality Japanese incense which includes the material, and which is distinct from oud oil. As for the oud oil effect, I like Black Aoud well enough, but prefer the note as one among many others, as in Jubilation XXV or Habit Rouge EdP.

Glad you mentioned this one...I'm not a huge Oud fan, but this one I actually kinda like.

Not so much into the oud scents, but in YSL M7(vintage) and Fahrenheit Absolute the oud works quite nice, imo.

The wood is fumigated (burned) to scent the room, hall or even clothes as such:

    Smells intoxicating on hair...

    This is oud oil:

What about Rosam (Histoires de Parfumes)? Is it based on oud wood? It smells a bit similar to Oud Isphahan.
