Thread: A Slumberhouse Sample Pass
Goes on very similar to Sova, and also brings to mind certain aspects of Jeke. Spices, dried fruits, and eventually tobacco. It's one of the more intense SH scents. In the mid I detect oud, or perhaps some other intense woody note. In the drydown, a little vanilla. Lasts 12hrs plus and projects very well. Very nice!
I've gotta say, deadidol was right, this is tough! I've worn a different SH frag almost every day for the last week and half. TBH, I'm all Slumberhoused out! These aren't the type of fragrances that I like to wear every day. For the few I have remaining, I will resort to wrist sampling.
Interesting to read through these reviews, awesome all. Thanks for sharing. I first dove into Slumberhouse about 2 years ago, so it's interesting hearing the perspectives of the newly initiated persons.
Interesting badarun, you are the only person that I've seen on basenotes that finds Sova to be quite animalic. Something in the fragrance gave me a headache, so I could not test extensively. However, my few times with the fragrance I got a Beeswax/Castoreum/Honey/Burnt Woods. I much preferred Baque to Sova as it was more mellow an not animalic in the slightest. To be clear though, I'm speaking of the first release, not the newer stuff. I'm not sure if the new bottles are the same as the first major release in August of 2012.
To add that I do not find MKK or MR from Malle anywhere animalic as Sova either.
I'm wearing Sova now from a sample. Castoreum does rise in the drydown, but it's faint or I would have had to wash it off by now. Found I'm very sensitive to it. If you're wearing the original, deadidol, the castoreum must have been reduced in the new version.
I'm wearing the extrait today. The original is actually very similar. But musks react differently on different people. Sova's boozy, animalic hay on me today
It's up there with the animalics, but I do find the Masque to be even more extreme, although that's way less castoreum and more ambrette / civet.
Very different smell. Green and earthy. Mildly herbal and spicy too. Also picking up on a melon type note. Another odd SH scent, but in a light and fresh sort of way. Not for me.
Dark and sweet. Floral. Boozy perhaps? Typically SH. Also get somewhat of a "sweaty" note, leather? Overall, a nice scent, but not one of my favorites in the line.
I've got a couple more to go, then the package will be off to ScentFan.
Oh shoot! Ya, I must have that Zahd paper somewhere. Honestly, it didn't smell like much when I got it. I could put it in an envelope and send it to the next person in the pass.
if anything's left:

Hi, Folks. Been under the weather for a few days, but I'm back at it. Regarding the sample pass, a few of the bottles are somewhat low. We’re not going to get three sprays per person, so try for a max of two.
First, an update on Zahd, then comments on the rest.
My Zahd arrived and it's truly a marvel, just as in the sample! After an initial blast of cranberry/cherry sweetness which quickly dissipates, the fragrance settles on my skin and then the star becomes the champaca, a yellow floral gem in a setting of mostly fruits and woods. When it arrived, I wore it all day. It's so well blended the drydown is just a dream. Hours later I still smelled it and hubby reported whiffs as I passed by. Next morning, it was still there, so longevity and sillage are fine. As everyone probably knows by now, the notes are: cranberry, champaca flower, benzoin, plum, pink lotus, fir, cocoa, tolu, gromwell, wine ether, mysore sandalwood, cherry, incense and oak. If I try, I can pick up the wine ether and the cocoa. Not sure what gromwell is. Zahd is a warm, unexpected and involving fragrance that I find entrancing. The champaca, cocoa, woods and incense are sultry bedfellows for the initially sweet cranberry & cherry. It’s hard to describe the combination, but it’s quite alluring, even comforting. Next morning the incense and oak are more prominent. The bottle is just as gorgeous as the scent. Guess we're not supposed to show photos yet? Now for some blasphemy. At risk of offending Josh (I hope not) and the perfume gods, I layered Zahd and Jeke and find the combination utterly addictive. It's a pas de deux so gorgeous, this could easily become my favorite scent, a fragrance I turn to when life is too amazing or too awful for speech. In this pas de deux, Jeke is Nureyev and Zahd Fontaine. No one has ever danced like those two and, to me, nothing can ever smell like Zahd/Jeke. [That said, I return you to your regularly-scheduled non-blasphemous regard for brilliant perfumery.]
Here are comments on the two in the sample pass I’d never tried:
Baque. Fragrantica classifies it as an oriental fougère, a genre I’ve yet to investigate. Looking it up. Wikipedia says a fougère has a top note of lavender and base of oak moss and coumarin (tonka bean). The most common modifiers are vetiver and geranium. Bergamot is often present. Baque’s notes are: Ambergris, Apricot, Davana, Parchment, Straw, Tobacco leaf, Tobacco blossom, Vanilla, Cedar. So I don’t get the fougère classification. I smell mainly apricot and tobacco, the other notes supporting them to create a unique scent experience that’s neither sweet nor bitter, but an appealingly dank mix of natural ingredients. A great smell, but perhaps not a perfume I’d wear.
Kere. Whoa, a pleasant initial blast of citrus, followed by a very appealing and unique scent — sweet, but not too much. I get a faint whiff of orange, also vanilla, a floral? The notes are: Aldehydes, Apricot, White chocolate, Plum, Orange, Honeysuckle, Licorice, Hay, Caramel. I really, really like this. Wait and the caramel and hay come deliciously up. Woe is me, I love it! Must hunt some down. The combo of ingredients is just magical.
My initial takes on the other scents in the pass are here:
Eki, Vikt, Flou, Grev, Sana
Jeke, Norne, Ore, Pear+Olive, Sova
Marvelous fragrances, overall. For me, not all are wearable, but all smell incredible. So much so, that I plan to buy everything Josh makes from now on.
Will repackage what’s left and get this off to juanderer tomorrow.

Dear badarun and JiveHippo
I tried to PM you, but it didn't work.
Geez, guys! ALL of the 5 ml samples I sent seem to have lost a full 2 ml or more up there in Canada, leaving less than half a ml for the others in the pass. I see no evidence of leakage in ALL my samples. JiveHippo, if you are an actual hippopotamus I understand, but for heavens sake. This was not my intention for these rare and expensive perfumes.
p.s. I'm telling Walad on you. Watch out for scimitars!
So, juanderer is next in line - looking forward to hearing your thoughts!
Hope you feel better soon, ScentFan
This is a real mystery then. The facts are these: I filled the vials to the brim, no space left at all, and badarun tells me he did the same for his, yet there is a clear 2 ml or more missing from all the vials, most with no evidence of leaks, much less uniformly whopping ones. Next, perhaps by happenstance (but unluckily if so), you made a special request to be the first to receive the pass. Then you made another request to change the pass order and mail it to someone other than me when you were done. I said, no, because there'd already been enough confusion and I wanted to replace the vials before the pass moved on. I have no idea what happened except the samples I contributed were full to the brim and taped down when they left me. The mod team decided to review this, so I leave it in their hands, having made a plea in your favor in case Murphy's Law is dogging our sample pass (and anyway I've always liked you).
Locked until we sort this out.
No one authorized this pass thread.
"Offering samples and bottles for free will be allowed here(male and female discussion boards!). Let's see if we can do this without asking for sample shipping costs. If someone offers samples and then later receives some, the costs should be a wash."
This is remaining locked as it has run its course. Personal transaction problems of any kind must be discussed privately as well. All passes and giveaways must be in the MFD or FFD under those rules.
