    Hi Francolino!

If you mean the Mods in the Mods & Rockers era - I never went close enough to any to find out

But they did like Burberry scarves & stuff....

Weren't they the subject of the rock opera Quadrophenia, by The Who? I was always fascinated by that album, because the culture clash was a bit inscrutable to Americans, making the whole thing somewhat mysterious. We had interesting youth subcultures of our own, but other people's always seemed more romantic.

Neat! Yes, I need to get that on DVD. And the album (or CD, as they call them now! ). Lost my copy years ago. I literally wore out the cassette tapes I carried with me everywhere!

    Probably nothing.

Their Dads would've used aftershave and the whole point of being a 'Mod' was to be different from the norm.

It was ALL about the clothes.

Colognes as an integral part of UK youth sub-culture really started in the 80's with the football 'Casuals' (hooligans) ... which is where my interest began, and I make no apologies.

Neat! Do you recall what sorts of colognes were popular for the Casuals?

    Oh yes.

Lots and lots of Kouros (including the now very rare 'sport' version), Polo, Lacoste, Aramis, Pacco Rabanne and Antaeus.

Gotta admit, there's some great taste in that list. Thanks!

I was wearing Polo in the US, because it was a bit of a preppie / yuppie / frat boy / sporto fragrance over here. Wish I would have known about Kouros and Antaeus back then - I would have loved them. I was also wearing a lot of Givenchy Gentleman.

D'oh! Add that one to the list.

At least one member of the Leicester City 'Young' Baby Squad (the kids who tagged along with the 'grown ups') was wearing Givenchy Gentlemen back then.

Cool! Are there any movies which really get the feel of that crowd and that time? I would love to check one out.

My youth gang experiences were somewhere in between American Graffiti and "Over The Edge" (Matt Dillon's debut). The culture from American Graffiti was dying out, but was hanging on in the cities and larger small towns, while the suburbs were picking up a residual vibe from the hippies, and the country kids were growing toward the "outlaw" country thing. There was an odd mix of groups, that was in some ways the basis of the surreal gangs in "The Warriors".

The Firm (1988), with Gary Oldman is pretty definitive and just about sums up what was happening.

The remake of The Firm (2009) and Awaydays (2009) focus more on the 'style' of the time.

The book 'Steaming In' by Colin Ward is fantastic too.

Thanks - very neat. I do recall hearing good things about the remake, but the original sounds like the ticket.

    EDIT:

OMG - I'm now watching it on YouTube, and it is only 5 minutes into the movie, and just wow. Classic moviemaking, and I can smell the Kouros coming off the computer screen.
