Pronounce it phonetically "oood" (one syllable)

The first letter is a letter only Arab speakers
    can pronounce.

I think this ones exclusive to Arabs because the Spaniards & jews can pronounce some Arabic letters like aleKHAndro. But the one in oud is unique to Arabic.

Food without the F would be closer.

Loud without the L sounds like "ow'd".

    ع

    http://mylanguages.org/multimedia/ar...o_alphabet.php

It's in the middle of the page and as mentioned above it is pronounced like 'food' (with a ع instead of the f)
It comes from the middle of the throat and involves the epiglottis moving towards the back wall of the throat

Hednic & bigbloke hit it dead on the money. At least that's how Andrew at Tom Ford and Rodney at Creed told me it was pronounced. I still catch myself pronouncing it like "owed" though.

I did that once 3 years ago.

Can't find the post or link to where I attached it.

Any idea where I can upload it?

"Ud" ... as in Elmer Fudd.

Or "Everyone, EVERYONE!!! Look at me! Me! ME!!!"

To the best of my knowledge, ood it is.

I asked this in Harrods a few years back and an Arab or Egyptian gentleman explained it as "ood" as pronounced in "wood" - from which the oil is derived from.

Thought is was a neat explaination and one that stuck with me easily.

I remember that. I remember how you pronounced it too. I think that realistically the closest that most folk will get is "ood" as in "food", or "good", depending on your accent.

Got told by an Arab-speaking colleague that it means 'wood'? He told me fragrance names like "oud wood" are ridiculous!
