If I like the smell of it...it's perfect.
Based on the smell without considering the longevity and sillage at first?
Based on the longevity and the sillage on your skin?
I have a sample of Beloved for Men from Amouage.
I sprayed on my skin and the longevity is outstanding (Just as long as Interlude for Men).
The sillage is great, too for over 4 hours.
I could smell the scent after 4 hours intensively like at the beginning.
It is also funny, that only fragrances that contain cederwood last on my skin longer than any other perfumes.
And those, which have the cederwood note, smell only cederwood on my skin. Any other notes are not recognizable.
Straight to Heaven is one example, which only smells cederwood on my skin.
Even if I donīt wear fragrances, my friends always tell me that my room and I smell woody.
I donīt have to spray on my skin, but when I just open the bottle of Beloved sample, I can smell it easily for hours although I never sprayed it on my skin.
Now, I have a concern that my skin or nose really loves (ceder)wood notes and they match my body and my personality.
How do you know if a scent is perfekt for you/ your skin?
If I like the smell of it...it's perfect.
If it makes me smile from top, to middle, to base notes, and I wake up wanting to wear it again - then it is perfect.
There is no "awkward" time in the development. The top doesn't make me hide myself away. The remainder doesn't vanish.
Like you, I am a "woody" person. On me, no wood = no good. I love patchouli, sandalwood and cedar, some vetivers, and some synthetic woods (but I don't know their names). These smell sweet and nice on me. Without wood, florals are shallow and do not last long on me. Without wood, ambers are too sweet. I don't think it is my nose because I like non-woody fragrances on other people, so I think it is my own body that requires woody scents and makes them smell so good.
If it's a line I collect and the said fragrance is lacking in my collection it's perfect for me. However other factors play into it also.

Remember that while it is perfectly acceptable to criticize the content of a post - criticizing the poster is not.
Mean spirited, nasty, snide, sarcastic, hateful, and rude individuals on Basenotes don't warrant or deserve other individuals' acknowledgement or respect.
There are various factor contributing to this. But most likely, some of the main requirements include: more than one successful testing (meaning impressive enough that I am delighted or at least intrigued about the fragrance) and a certain pleasant mood, a range of beneficial associations triggered by/linked with the specific fragrance.
I would not say perfect but simply you like more than others..
Since cedar is your thing-check out more woody scents..
Plenty more - you gotta do some research
If I hope never to run out!
If I still like it after ten years.
If the thought of it's pending reformulation sets me off into insomnia and uncontrolled weeping, or cursing, or both.
I think it's a combination of you liking it as well as others liking it on you. If you reach for it on every occasion, that's the perfect fragrance..
There is only one perfect fragrance for me, and every time I spray it on I remember exactly why it is my favourite.
1. It is only worn for 'best', 2. I have a couple of back up bottles of it and 3. I would happily swap the 20 or so others in my wardrobe for another bottle.
When it's my most reach for...and is the only one kept on top of my dresser ( out of 20 plus) In my case, YSL L'Homme. The bottle is cool looking also, which is an added bonus

If its minor faults are endearing, not annoying, then it's perfect.
I agree with most here that when I spray it on and I cannot get enough of it, its perfect for me or close to it for that matter.
For me it is something that cannot be put into words. Perhaps that indescribable "it" factor. It will envelope me with a warmth and richness, a masculinity. It will make me feel .Like music or a good book. I will just know. Like putting on my 17 year old leather jacket. I have scents I like, that I think smell good. That is different from being perfect for me.
