That bad even with very judicious application? As in a couple of dabs here and there? Unfixable?

I believe that it's because it's not the sillage/projection monster that it was in its hey days...don't get me wrong it still a great scent but not what it was in the original formulation in the 80's.....

Musk Gazelle by Ajmal. It is not bitter but it fulfills the others. Caution: Wear it to the zoo before you wear it in the wild.

lol looks like it. My bottle is fairly old and from Ebay, I can't be entirely sure if this has enhanced the meatiness of the top notes. It's somewhat hard to imagine that this was a teenage hit once. Drydown is nice though.

This struck me funny. Polo Green was introduced to my husband by a cute SA years ago. He liked it and now it's all he wears, pretty much. Sometimes he wears Etro Sandalo. But the main thing I noticed about the Polo was the patchouli opening. It has changed recently and isn't as mellow as it was to begin with, but I think you need to try a newer sample. It's not that bad!

Well it meets two of the three criteria (revolts and scares.) Not sure about attracts, if someone has anosmia to civet, it's a nice tobacco-rum scent. My SO liked it until the civet came out and then she told me to never wear it again.

Bad?? No - I think its Great! Now its no fancy - dandy scent for a 15 year old - but it is classic excellence. 4-5 sprays and its smooth leather for a good day.

Have several bottles (all vintage if that makes a difference) and its one of my favorites!

It's not that bad really. It's definitley smells like the 80's though. It kind of reminds me of Azzaro pH, but much greener, and darker.. but not like Polo at all.. it's actually hard to describe. Maybe Azzaro pH, meets Quorum, meets Givenchy Gentleman.. The citrus notes are nice in it though, but it's definitley not for everyone.. only somebody confident can pull this one off. Projection is beast, even on current formulation. Your vintage is gonna be super beast.. be careful.

Vintage Aramis is like well aged whiskey. Not all will appreciate it. For 8 bucks buy 2 bottles. You will thank yourself later.

Robert Piguet's Casbah EDP has been attracting unfavourable comment from bystanders. Feedback has mentioned something sharply, brutally faecal. Initially it is rather relentlessly powerful before easing into a quite unique cool smell.

Thanks. I got 1 full bottle, and I like it.

Apparently, it's not as vintage vintage as I thought. The back of the box says "2004", so that must be the production year.

It's a splash bottle, and what's funny is it's labeled as "eau de cologne",
I don't think they ever released an EDC concentration of ARAMIS, ever.

Good luck to the poor dude who'll splash this one all over like 4711. Haha.

The 2oz spray bottle, I didnt get, but I'll get that too when I get back to the shop. Will try to post pics soon.

I just applied just dabs to the wrist, and smeared my wrists on my neck. Like applying pure oils.

It's good that way, for me, right now.
Maybe I'll ramp up the application after a while.

    Dior Leather Oud (civet)
    Guerlain Mouchoir de Monsieur (civet)
MPG Parfum d'Habit (Petitgrain, Vetiver, leather and patchouli)

You're right. I really like it. Decanted about 10ml of it in a travel atomiser. And I've been using it for 2 days straight.

Just 1 spray, 8 inches away from my chest. (I live in the tropics, gotta be careful with the amount of sprays)

    It lasts a long time.

PS: A basenoter said the one I got was a pre 1980 vintage. I like it. Lucky find.

I though they stopped making splash bottles in the 90s but maybe they still do with Aramis since a lot of older guys still buy it and like the splash they are used to. Does it say Eau de Cologne or just "Cologne". I found one of my dads bottles from the early 80s and it just says "Cologne". Makes it more manly that way.

I love almost every fragrance mentioned on this thread. The only one I've found too much, even for me, is Mazzolari Lui. I've also never tried the infamous Secretions Magnifique. I don't think anyone has mentioned Juniper Ridge's Caruthers Canyon, which would fit into this category for sure. This thread has really made me want to try Masque Montecristo.

I forgot to mention 'Mazzolari Mazzolari' which is more appealing than 'Lui'. It's a very nice 'golden' chypre, IMO. I wish my husband would wear it. Maybe it's not super brutal but it has real depth and presence.

Give Lapidus pour Homme by Ted Lapidus a try, i find this one brutal and scarry. With a few sprays, you'll easily clear the room!

I'd never smelled Grey Flannel before and spied an open box of it. Some dolt had tested it and left the cap off in the box. What mindless disrespectful person was it? Who knows, they abound. Well, before putting the cap where it should be, over the sprayer, I "accidentally" sprayed my hand. I put the cap on and closed up the box properly.

As I proceeded with the rest of my TJMaxx tour, I smell my hand. Interesting. I didn't realize I'd apparently dipped my hand in laundry detergent. No wait, maybe it was a box of dryer sheets.

The present incarnation of Grey Flannel is an abomination to all who hold wearing a fine fragrance dear. it is nothing short of banal cleaning agent fragrance. I am so turned off by it, I will never even make an attempt to track down a vintage bottle of the stuff. I will never be able to disassociate my impression of Grey Flannel. Geoffrey Beane-bag chair time.

I've never seen a laundry detergent that smells of violet leaves.
Grey Flannel might not be for everyone but it's of good quality, including the new version of it.

You talk only about old fragrances. Nobody mentioned about Versace. There is good and interesting fragrance like Versace Eros.
Versace - pour Homme Oud Noir is really strong.
Armani - Eau Pour Homme is strong too.

I find Aramis very pleasantly sweet actually.

For bitter and strong manly stuff, I'd say Kouros or Fahrenheit.

Brutal (but not foul, i presume?) yet attractive to some?

    Leather Oud as mentioned above
Secretions Magnifiques, also as mentioned above

    Serge Noire

Also, 15 sprays of A*Men can be sufficiently brutal. Adjust according to the distance you want cleared of all biological matter.
