Question Deal-breaker notes, What are your least favorite perfume notes?

Which are the notes that warn you away from buying/trying a frag?
    I have a few that I know I almost never go for. Some include;
    Immortelle
    mimosa
    fig
    lavender
    cashmerian (whatever that is)
    sometimes musk
growing tired of Aoud and incense everywhere in place of oak moss

Juniper can be a killer for me, but I've learned that oftentimes a listed note can be spun in so many ways or played with such subtlety that my opinion of the scent can be the opposite of what I expected. A good example is Onda EdP in that the idea of passion fruit in fragrance is totally unappealing to me, but it works so well in this one. With that said, rose is generally my kryptonite, as well as anything connected to desserts.

EDIT: Yep, I have to add aquatics and chemical "clean" scents. I forgot to mention them here because it's a whole genre that I've managed to block entirely. Anything along the flankery lines of Issey Miyake, Allure, and stuff like that is just an instant no go in my book. Nauseating to the point that teal-colored bottles now scare me.

While maybe not "deal breakers" these are certainly some notes/aspects I generally dislike...

    Cumin
    Fecal
    Aldehydes
    Peach
    Immortelle
    Celery Seed
    Fenugreek
    Cashmeran
    Norlimbanol
Lavender, vanilla and cocoa when their powdery facets are featured (essentially powdery notes in general)

I hear you- passion fruit is another for me. 'Onda' didn't work for me. I think it is more masculine. I forgot a few others; freesia, tonka and Tiare.

It's amazing how many things have freesia and/or tonka in them. On the other hand, my avoiding these scents definitely saves me a bundle.

    Absolute no-no:
Ethyl maltol (the sickly sweet candy floss note).

    General no-nos (with exceptions):
    Cumin,
    Immortelle
    Hugely indolic florals
Musks with a strong berry facet
    Rice
    Tropical fruits and apple

I can handle just about any note to be honest, but anthing that smells strongly of powder is a definite pass for me. A deeply buried powder note is tolerable if the rest of the scent works for me.

I have found that orris causes that note oftentimes. Especially in older-style perfumes it can be the cause of the repugnantly called "old-lady" vibe. Steering clear of orris is a big help.

Marine is a no no for me. Not even in masterpieces like Lys mediterranee.

I see immortelle doesn't seem to have much love. I love it. We need a fig-heliotropin-immortelle for kumquat!
And has kumquat tried Dior Eau Noire?

Not sure about the individual notes, but I do not like aquatic type perfume, or perfume that is labeled as clean. I guess that would mean I'm not fond of musk. Like some of the other posters, I don't like the cotton candy note, and gourmand perfumes are sickening to my nose. While I do like the smell of lavender, I do not like to wear it. A little tobacco goes a long way with me as does the leather note.

Anything fruity, except for citrus. When reading reviews, as soon as the word "fruity" is mentioned, l lose interest.

l can stand just about everything else, as long it's handled right.

Too sweaty, meaty or "dirty" animalic notes, too sweet and "perfumy" florals, though enjoying gourmands, too unilaterally sugary-sweet notes, too smoky, overpowering and choking incense, cumin, too pungently green notes, certain apple notes, as well too peppery ones.

Reading this thread makes me a little mischievous and cannot help but think about perfumes people should try...

    Here are some:
    kumquat: Eau Noire
deadidol: Angel La Rose (kriptonite is actually a surprisingly good description. I like it)
    drseid, ghandajala : El Attarine
Jon Rodgers, dougczar: Eau d'Hermes (vintage)
    Easyfish: vintage Schiaparelli Shocking
Akahina: Jicky (but it depends what he means by power)
    ExtremeK: Nicolai musc intense
Jack Hunter, hednic: JAR Bolt of lightning
    curly: jeux de peau
    kalli: Chanel Jersey
teardrop: Rosine fruit defendu (sorry, you have to go to the osmotheque for this)
    kenrussell: Joy (parfum vintage)

Yes, for sure there are exceptions to every rule. These discussions can be great for new discoveries. I've heard of Eau Noire but never tried it. I must do that soon!

Without starting another thread of notes that We don't normally like but in this exception we do- (maybe we should?)
I will mention one lavender I really do like- DelRae- Eau Illuminee.

This is going to sound snobby, but there are certain notes put into scents to make them smell familiar and comfortable to people who specifically AREN'T fragrance aficionados, and they're pretty much always a red flag for me:

For the guys, that "aquatic" "woody amber" chemical buzz that smells like ammonia or a hot over-chlorinated swimming pool. It's in almost all mens designer scents and just burns my nostrils.

For the girls, there's more of a list:
That fake strawberry that smells like cheap 90's shampoo
That combination of pink pepper, patchouli, and vanilla that people call a "fruitchouli" base.
And, in solidarity with gadhajala, ethyl maltol (cotton candy vanilla)

Also, unrelated to the mass market dumbing-down smells above, I also have issues with cumin and civet.
Has everyone checked out my Top 100 Blog??

I agree (except to me it smells more like overheated electrical wiring)! It's a stiflingly acrid note that does indeed seem to be in pretty much all designer men's scents.

    Aquatics
    Loud citrus, especially bergamot
    Metallics
    Lavender (sometimes but not always)
    Soapy florals: freesia, lilac etc

My aversions tend to be combinations of notes, rather than one particular note, though.

@ cacio I googled jeux de peau and came up with a great review by Victoria at Bois de Jasmin. She likens the fragrance to toast and jam among other things. What's not to like about toast and jam? So, jeux de peau is now on my radar of scents to at least sniff once or twice. Thanks for the recommendation.

I agree with Horns, very scary! So glad I've never run into this combo.

    You all are reminding me of lots of objectionable notes;
    Datura
    Fruity (fake berries)
    Chemical aquatics
    Gardenia
    Fake tea
    Honey
Gosh, there are quite a few. I'm amazed my perfume collection is as large as it is.

Can't speak to the Fahrenheit, but Womanity affects people in different ways. To some, it is indeed briney, but to others, it's more salty. Although I can't say I'm a fan, it's far more palatable than the horde of A*Men flankers (and more imaginative, too)

Sidenote- heavily indolic scents make strangely appropriate bathroom sprays.

For the longest time, I didn't know why I never liked Dior Homme. Then one day, I was at L'Occitane store, and by chance, smelled their Lavender scent, and that almost make me throw up. I now know that I really don't like Lavender. The other 2 notes I don't like are amber and musk, too much of either just nauseate me.

    Here's my list of dislikes:

Gourmands in the Angel style: with caramel and chocolate notes (usually on a patchouli-base)

Fruit like berries, nectarines, strawberry in the fruity floral style

Almost all acquatics/marine notes, starting with L'Eau d'Issey. The once exception is Dior's Dune, which uses them as secondary notes but they are not the focus of the composition.

Fenugreek, curry, immortelle-- too much like an Indian restaurant's kitchen

Honey-- too sweet. In general don't like sweet fragrances

    Tuberose-- usually overpowering for me

Cucumber-- usually has a very phony, metallic aspect

Clean and green tend to put me off.

    Civet
Lavender, in anything more than very low amounts.
Powder. PdN New York was all but unwearable for me, I still have no idea which note it was.
    Lemon unless tempered by something.
    Cumin
Carnation and other strong "flowery" notes that dominate the scent. Exceptions would be the rose notes in Windsor and Egoiste.
    Lemon verbena
