Thread: Best leather?

    Default Best leather?

    Hey there,

I haven't really sampled a lot of leather based fragrances and I really want to. I just love the smell of a nice leather coat or of a leatherman's shop. I have a sample of Cuir 28 which I do enjoy, but I am interested what else is out there. Thanks!

Many leather lovers here. Including myself, so some of my favorites in increasing order of butchness:

Chanel Cuir de Russie, Etat Libre d'Orange Tom of Finland: smoothest suede
Knize Ten: elegant-automotive (like a pre war perfumed dandy aristocrat who likes playing with cars)
Aramis-Estee lauder Azuree:confident, all American lived-in leather (the first musky, the second citrusy)
    Artisan Parfumeur Dzing: circusy leather
    Dior Leather oud: animalic woody
    Bandit: s&m black patent leather
Etat Libre d'Orange Rien: intensely animalic

    Butch leather: Knize Ten
Refined, soft and luxurious: Tom Ford Tuscan Leather
    "Old money" leather: Guerlain Derby
Somewhat soft and feminine: Chanel Cuir de Russie
Skanky and raw: Dior Leather Oud
Awesome everyday soft and smooth leather: Hermes Bel Ami
Luxurious leather furniture vibe: Parfum d'Empire Cuir Ottoman
Aromatic leather and spices: L'Artisan Parfumer Dzing!
Smoky oud and leather: Montale Aoud Cuir d’Arabie

    These are my favorite leathers.

Not my favorite, but a lot of people like this one: Bvlgari Black. To me, it's more "rubber tire" than leather.

These are the six best, leathers/suedes for mine, and I've tried almost every one mentioned so far.

It's particularly nice to see Cuir Mauresque get a mention; it gets overshadowed by a lot of the other modern takes on classic leathers.
Delightfully floral and extremely powerful, it's relegated the Knize to 'seldom used' status.

Every time I wear Knize Ten, the strangest thing happens when I sit on my leather couch. Instead of making a squeak-sound, it says "How YOU doin'?" My couch has good taste. I vote Knize Ten.

Testing Knize Ten again this evening. Its engine is still growling after almost a century.

Picked up Cuir de Russie parfum yesterday after dabbing some on at Neiman Marcus. Beautiful. Smoky, butch/femme, smooth and sexy.

Dzing! is indeed circus leather. Santal 33 is loud cowboy leather. Fahrenheit updates Knize's auto-shop allure. Leather Oud is masculine charm with lascivious intentions. Bulgari Black isn't leather, it's vanilla-smoothed rubber, but hey, kindred kinks.

Love Tuscan Leather and Derby but my absolute favourite is vintage Bel Ami. Strange then that I simply cannot wear (or stand) Knize Ten. I've tried to (10+ times) but the longest I've lasted with it on me is one hour before I have to scrub it off, or more correctly try to scrub it off, it clings like a limpet!
Hard work never killed anyone, but why risk it?

I hate it when there's a fragrance like that, which is a classic and universally respected or loved, I dislike. I happen to love Knize Ten, though.

I'm a big fan of leathers, and I also find Tuscan Leather to be one of the best because it represents what leathers in this day and time actually smell like. I consider it a "modern leather" while those with a birch tar component are to me an older, yet still classic, leather - and for that category I must say that Kolnisch Juchten is the best available. I find that Puredistance M is quite similar to Kolnisch Juchten, for those who can't or don't want to lay down the cash for the former.

Lastly, I just don't detect the leather in Derby. Is it more of a concept of leather or is it birch tar and I just don't get it?

Oh, and Patchouli 24 needs to be mentioned.

"Best Leather" is rather ambiguous and never definitive, IMHO. I'd word it more accurately like "Your Favorite Leather" and then in the initial post qualify what characteristics you are looking for in a leather fragrance. Because "Leather" by itself is rather generic. Each fragrance has its own take on leather. They can be spicy, smoky, soapy, mossy, dark, light, sweet, or dry, to just name a few qualities..

For instance, my favorite soapy/smoky leather is Knize Ten. Absolutely delicious and long lasting. For a lighter and more floral kind of leather, Knize Sec is a great choice.
