For me, my grail could well be Tauer's LDDM. But I love so many others as well. It's hard to me monogamous-scentric

It's not easy for me but I would say that Bois des Iles/Egoiste is part of it. Another part is orientals like Shalimar/Habit Rouge. And yet another would be iris centred scents, even IdI and IdH by Prada.

I can understand that perfectly well, it happens the same to me with Mitsouko and L'Heure Bleue.

I have forever been in love with Houbigant Ambergris from the 70's. I am still in love with the sister Houbigant Patchouli (but not the new version as it is absolutely and utterly different) and also the Civet. Less so the musk of the same set. These are for private sniffing pleasures as they are too precious for wearing out. I hoard the set with glittering eyes like my own Smaugs dragon treasure den of jewels.

My true wearing love has always been vintage Armani by Armani. I am stocked up for some time on that. Vintage Yendi is a tiny and precious bottle for special wear only. Another is vintage Diorling and also the reformulation too although it's not so similar. Vintage Coco Chanel was a favourite but I haven't worn it in a while. The new isn't a patch on the old.

All of my existing prized holy grails are vintage come to think of it.

More recently I like to ring the changes and the sniffing quest will be forever continued probably until I die. I shall compile a list of those as we go along. Dzing is one I like to keep sniffing but isn't ranking as high yet as grail but I cannot put it down either. More to come when I think of them.

I'm not sure about HG, but Bvlgari Black is the only thing I own that never feels like a wrong choice. Sometimes, something else in my collection is better-suited to a given event, but I've never left home in Black and wished later that I'd chosen differently.

A couple months have passed, more sniffing opportunities and my tastes keep evolving. I'll add a few to my list. These make me feel like I've sniffed a bit of heaven.

    Slumberhouse Zahd
    Chanel NO 5 EDP
    Guerlain Jicky Extrait
    Guerlain L'Heure Bleue
    Schiaparelli Shocking (vintage Parfum)
    Prada Infusion D'Iris Absolue
    Vintage Hermes Eau D'Hermes
    MFK Absolue Pour Le Soir
    CaronTabac Blond
    Lancôme Cuir de Lancôme
    Amouage Ubar Woman
    Keiko Mecheri Attar de Roses
    Keiko Mecheri Genie de Bois
    Serge Lutens Mandarine Mandarin

But I am not sure that even begins to cut it for me. So many amazing things out there.
I would have despaired unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.

A few years ago when I was trying to find my "holy grail" I discovered buying decants and since then I'm an aimless nomad. I have always hated testing in stores, I like to try things at home on different days, in different weather, in different environments, etc. I started with a few 2mL decants that I thought I might like and that has created a monster, I usually buy five or six 2mL decants per month of fragrances I've never worn before. And I live in constant fear that when I do finally stumble upon perfection, it will be promptly discontinued by the manufacturer.

I have to say, sadly.....Amouage's Tribute Attar has grail status for me. And all I will have for the present is 3 precious ml of that juice. going to have to use some of my dubai connections to possibly get me a full bottle from the source, especially once they start producing the attars again in their pre-IFRA glory.....

Yes -- from what I understand, they will only be available at the Oman flagship in Muscat. That being so, they are free to make them however they wish and not deal with the IFRA regs. I hope this is so......I would love to have a bottle of Tribute that has not been hampered by the fragrance police

I doubt they will stop producing the attars - they just don't want to distribute them outside the borders of Oman. So, we will have to find new ways of getting them, such as friends who live in the region that can visit and buy in person.

That may no longer be the case, stargarden - there seems to be some info. about all Omani perfume being perhaps required to be compliant now/soon in the first post of that thread.
In the longer term it appears unclear.

I just found an excellent new one- Jovoy- Private Label (deep, dark spicy), IPDF- Costa Mediteraneo (tangy cologne), MDCI- Chypre Palatin, green and creamy, Mazzolari- Mazzolari, Lui & Vetyver , PG- Aomassai & Querelle, Etro- Shaal Nur , Profumum- Acqua Viva, Victrix, Arso, Fumidus, Montale- Patchouli Leaves, Black Aoud, Serge Lutens- Vetiver Oriental

Those are all current but one vintage, if you can find it, is Givenchy Gentleman, but it must be in the old bottle with the black and white wicker design box and the square upright bottle with the gold square lid. A lovely dark chypre.

I'm flattered that you're interested in my opinion. Thanks for asking.

I've come to realize that for myself it is impossible to have just one scent as a Holy Grail, mostly because there are so many terrific combinations of notes to be made. If you have strong favorites from each major notes group, like oriental woody, leather, chypre, or fougere, how can you pick one over the other?

IFRA and EU are ruining everything, all in the name of increasing profits by forcing the use of patented synthetics. I really wish Amouage would make 2 lines -- one for Europe and one for rest of the world.

Back in 2004, at the age of 18-- I stopped into a local Sephora with a friend and sniffed Guerlain Vetiver in its horizontal line bottle. And I told myself that I know I'll wear it once I'm older. Flash forward to late 2012; I grabbed a bottle of its current formulation.
And now, I've got three bottles and a vintage decant (thanks remik!) varying from 1960, 1989, 2003, and 2012 formulations.

Although I keep obtaining new bottles. I do believe Guerlain Vetiver is my grail.

    2) Imaginary Authors The Cobra and The Canary

That would actually make for a very interesting experiment. We already do synchronised Friday's but wouldn't it be fun to all attempt one particular day to all wear an exactly identical perfume. I wonder if anyone would notice.

Wouldn't want to wait until I'm dead, but this is pretty funny and probably an accurate way of looking at this question. It's often not until we wear a scent many times throughout the years that memories start accumulating and our relation to it becomes stronger. Probably why I get a bit peeved when so many blast a descent offering that may not seem "great" within the first month, but ultimately becomes a favorite. Not all classics are instantaneous.

On the subject of Azuree, does anyone know if this has been reformulated since its inception? I got mine three years ago and love it as well....strong and biting like a powerful shot of alcohol. Just curious. Lauder does a pretty good job of keeping the original formulation outside of Lauder for Men.

I'm thinking it almost has to be considering it debuted in '69, Oakmoss restrictions, etc... Maybe a "dumb" question. It just seems like it is vintage.

I'd managed to get a bottle from the UK vintage. I found it too pungent with the floral notes, very similar to Gres Cabochard, which I'm not particularly fond of. I sold the bottle and the buyer was happy with it. Just wondering if I should bother sampling a newer vintage.

Vintage Patou Pour Homme is the most balanced and beautiful perfume I have ever smelt. I suppose that is my holy grail. I am always looking for my next favorite though. Each time I wear Vintage Mitsouko or Derby I love them more and more so who knows what will be next. I have a feeling it will be something for Guerlain though.

As much as I hate to admit it, Aventus is the closest thing for me. Has great notes, silage and longevity on my skin. There are others that would come close if only they lasted...
    It felt dirty admitting that

It's better to feel dirty and truthful than clean and lying I suppose. A million people may like it but I think it's pretty damn good and unique despite that fact....and despite my general disdain for Creed fans who blow that house way out of proportion.

Dolce & Gabbana Pour Homme (Vintage).
The UK reformulation was the first version I tried and I loved it.
After testing a vintage sample I recently received, I don't know if I can love another cologne.
Even though I am a rookie in the fragrance game, this cologne might have ended the journey.

    Less fragrance is more.

If you don't like vintage Cabochard chances are you you won't respond to Azureé. It is a green leathery chypre. Somewhat 'golden' in nature. One of the nice things about it IMO is how the florals come forward above the leather.

Well, as I responded back in February, I still think "Holy Grail" should indicate one ultimate be-all and end-all, in this case a perfume so unimaginably magnificent and unspeakably stunning it completely ends your search for any other ...and it appears we all know that's not gonna happen. But if we're actually just talking about *perfect* perfumes, then I can name several...

    Chanel Coco
    Chanel Coromandel
    Catherine Deneuve Deneuve
the original Calvin Klein for women
    Guerlain Chamade
    Guerlain Iris Ganache
    Gucci No1
    Gucci No3
    L'Arte di Gucci
    Dior Dune
    Krizia K de Krizia
    Hermès Rouge
    Serge Lutens Bas de Soie
    Amouage Lyric Woman
    ELdO Rossy de Palma
    Amouage Lyric Woman
    By Kilian Rose Oud
    Clinique Aromatics Elixir
    L'Artisan Mimosa Pour Moi

...and there are many, many more. Happily, perfect perfumes aren't nearly as difficult to find as the enchanted cup of Arthurian legend.

Science is not only compatible with spirituality, it is a profound source of spirituality. When we recognize our place in an immensity of light-years and in the passage of ages, when we grasp the intricacy, beauty, and subtlety of life, then that soaring feeling, that sense of elation and humility combined, is surely spiritual. ..Carl Sagan
