I know a lot of people would disagree with me, but in my opinion, L'Artisan is overrated. It's one of the biggest names in niche, and has a ton of offerings, but so many of their frags are just 'meh' to me.

I'm not sure, but, Creed has to be the best house by far. Their worst fragrances are better than some houses best fragrances.

    I'll second that.

Overrated: Creed by miles, Tom Ford, Xerjoff, and tbh most of super-high-end niche that does not justify the astronomical prices they charge as Monsieur de la parfumerie is not off plucking patchouli leaves and harvesting civet glands like their ad copies try to pretend.

Underrated: Slumberhouse and ELDO (both pushing fragrances in new exciting directions), Lalique for providing niche quality stylistics at affordable prices, MFK, and Comme des Garçons

Overrated in the basenotes forum: Creed, the "niche" line that's available at Walgreens, Target, Kmart and Winners, the TJMaxx of Canada.

Underrated in the basenotes forum: Cartier. Not that they always get it right, but no one ever really talks about them.

The ultra-snarky part of me wanted to say:

Overrated: Any house that BN likes
Underrated: Any house that BN dislikes

But in the end, I'll probably upset quite a few with my picks...

Agreed. One of my favourite houses, and Declaration is one if my favourite scents. One criticism: too many ho-hum flankers.

I agree. They used to be a great house when Jean Laporte was around. Santal, Vetiver and L'Eau du Navigateur are good examples of real quality perfumery. Then - of course - he left L'Artisan and found Maitre Parfumeur et Gantier, which was great fragrance house from 1988 to the moment he retired. L'Artisan is nowadays a house where they cook up some interesting concepts, execution is always rushed.
