Have I told you about the scent of jasmine? Have I spoken about the smell of the sea? The earth is scented. And I perfume myself to enhance what I am. This is very lovely! Why haven't I been wearing this for a year? It has this magical persistent fresh citrussy lime note, which remains, not just in the topnotes yet it does not smell too liniar.

This is *so* funny, Frou! I can just imagine the looks you must get while running and screaming out loud as the undead catch up to you, lol!! What a great distraction, and fear sure is a good motivator! It'd be fun to try, but I need to completely zone out and just melt into my music on my runs to get the most out of them - they're almost like meditation for me, and I can't think of a faster way to totally shatter my nerves than to suddenly realize I have a freakin' *zombie* on my tail, hehe. Enjoy your run, and good luck!

    Good mornin'!

I've been to the gym in Infusion d'Iris, and now contemplating how to spend the rest of the day. I might practice walking Rocky using some techniques I have been reading about. He is a terrible puller on the leash, and as he is very strong, walking him is sort of a difficult chore but we love to walk so I have got to figure out a way for him to learn to walk nicely.

Evangeline, I love when you wear your vintage Miss Dior because that darlin' retro pink ad is just about my favorite one you post.

Moods by Krizia. It really is a great scent, and I had forgotten about the silky looking box.

I empathize with all the dog walkers out there! Mine was pretty crazy on a leash (and occasionally still is), but I took him to leash walking school and they helped me fix that (after a fall on the ice). The trainer thought I was a terrible "enabler".

ComDiva - thank you for that quote. ((bear hugs)) I feel much better today. I ran into some photos of me & my ex, last night on my computer, and instead of feeling horrible I actually felt very grateful and happy.
ErinK - well...I smelled Jicky about 5 years ago when I was at the Guerlain counter @ Nordstroms. It was those rectangular little squat tester bottles that Guerlain puts all of their Parfum versions in, for testing. I remember thinking to myself, 'Oh Jicky! The scent that everyone talks about on BN. The scent that Sean Connery wears. That classic scent!'. I sprayed it on and of course, as is normal for the Parfum, this stuff is LOADED with civet. And so it smells basically like shit, unless you're prepared for it. I remember immediately making a face and thinking 'How am I going to wash this stuff off without offending the SA?'. I walked over to my ex (who was talking to some other SA about skin care, I think YSL) and I made him and the SA smell it. They both wrinkled their noses. I remember the SA saying 'It smells like Fantastik cleaner!'. I made a mental note: AVOID Jicky. Fast forward to me falling in love with Shalimar, then all of a sudden it seems that my nose became accustomed to the Guerlinade and that wonderful lavender-civet-aromatics accord that is sort of the 'base' for Shalimar and I think it was Kevin Guyer who sold me his bottle of Mouchoir de Monsieur. I immediately loved it. I wrote a fantastic review of it, for Perfume Shrine (link here). Supposedly MdM has even more civet than Jicky. So, when I finally re-tested Jicky (someone, I cannot remember, gifted me a decant of the Eau de Parfum) I loved it. It was like meeting the Grandmother of a friend that you have and realizing that your friend has a lot of the same qualities as her Grandmother. And when I say that I do not mean to imply that Jicky smells matronly. On the contrary, it smells like no other scent I own (well, except for other Guerlains). It's lavender is soft, caramelic and softened. The civet is plump, feral and radiant. The aromatics feel soft (not crisp) as if they've been stewing together for quite some time. I now own vintage Parfum de Toilette (quite rare & hard to find) and 'new' Parfum. I find that the Eau de Toilette (the version that is most affordable and easiest to find) is my least favorite version - it's a bit too powdery and it does the same thing that Shalimar EdT does to me - conjures up the smell of a baby diaper (powder, skank, sweetness). So, if I were you ErinK, I would try to smell Parfum or PdT (or EdP) of this scent first, to convey the best first impression. And, like me, take your time with it. It took me years to 'get' it. It was definitely worth it. Oh - and congratulations on the No. 19 vintage EdT. It looks fantastic!
Quarry - vanilla is a favorite note of mine for winter. While you're @ Scent Bar try to smell Vanille 44 by Le Labo. I think it's a very 'Quarry' sort of scent.
Robin-in-FL - Happy Birthday! I just realized you and I are almost the same age. Hope you and your family are celebrating your special day.
FrouFrou - what the heck is a 'zombie run'?

My cough is lingering, it woke me up several times in bed last night. The only thing that worked was a spoonful of honey that I swallowed slowly and finally I was able to get back to sleep. Thank goodness that I went to bed early and that I didn't have to wake up early. I really hope this cold goes away soon - I'm tired of feeling 'blah'. I am thinking some sun & Vitamin C would do me good today, so I might head over to the beach this afternoon. It's a lot of hassle to get to the beach but every time that I do I think to myself 'I need to come here more often'

In the meantime, I'm sitting here in a cloud of sandalwood:

Mike, I have had a similar journey with Guerlain and my impression was the same as you, I just needed to get to know it a bit.

I'm sad to report that the hubby thinks Lanvin My Sin smells like peed on sheets. WHAT?! Well, I guess that is the reputation. It's not what I get at all, but he sure does. I have some hope that perhaps his nose can adjust in time.

I am wearing Au the Rouge today, which he says smells like the sea!

mike, thanks for sharing your Jicky story. I know what you mean about trying something once, disliking it, or thinking it very difficult, and gradually becoming accustomed to different things, so that trying it again it seems like a totally different fragrance than when you tried it the first time. That has been one of the greatest joys to me in learning more about perfume: acquiring a taste for fragrances over time. I should probably start with some other Guerlains before trying Jicky. To be honest, I feel sort of defeated about Guerlain before I even properly start so it's nice to know you were also initially challenged by Jicky. It is so interesting that it's, what, the longest perfume in continuous production, and it's such a difficult one. If something as difficult was launched by a mainstream house (that's not to say Guerlain in the 1880s was mainstream - clearly it was a luxury then) these days, you wouldn't expect it to stay in production so long. It's also interesting to think about people's tastes in perfumery when it was launched in 1889.

(((kalli))) so sorry to hear about the passing of your friend. I am sure the memorial service will be a beautiful tribute to her life.

    mike, love your Jicky story.

It's sunny, snow is melting and I expect to see crocuses any day now. There's something in Sarrasins' opening that suggests early "pre-spring", green plus dirt. Sarrasins shape shifts with the seasons, I am discovering. Stuck indoors today with back spasms; Sarrasins bringing some of that cold sunshine and meltiness indoors for me, never mind Uncle Serge's insistence on dark summer nights.

Thanks, Larimar! It's nice to feel less stressed out and able to enjoy life again.

This evening, I shall return to an old favorite of mine: Parfum d'elle by Montana, the old one. It is relaxing and just what I need on this first nice day in many, many weeks!

I took my Rusty out on a nice long walk, cleaned the remains of the ice off the bottom of the driveway, and now have the evening to do a bit of necessary reading, some fun reading, and read around Basenotes. I am resolving to spend some of my new found free time to get back to some old interests that I have missed like crazy!

Gorgeous day here, sunny and in the 60s. I just made some dinner: middle eastern cannellini bean pitas with tzaziki and cucumbers, nice and healthy...then had like 10 Girl Scout cookies for dessert. Oops.

In vintage Diorisismo edt. I'm guessing it is not super-duper vintage as it's light in color and doesn't have that vintage reek I expected (and hoped for). I've read that the houndstooth boxes continued into early 90s so maybe it's from then. Whenever it's from, though, it's radiantly beautiful and I can see wearing this lots.

I've been in L'Artisan Fleur d'Oranger today as we visited yet another college that our daughter applied to. It was a worthwhile trip but she doesn't seem to like the school so much now. She seems at this point to have set her hopes on one school in particular that we won't hear back from for another 5 weeks, and that is selective enough that there is certainly no guarantee of her being accepted, despite her excellent qualifications. We plan to visit at least 3 more colleges in the next month, including a local state university that she wasn't willing to consider until now because she didn't want to commute.

shades, after all the long hours you've been putting in at work, I'd say this little vacation is well-deserved for Mr. shades *and* you! Enjoy!

My screen banners seem unaffected by my recent porn-filled post, Xscent. I'm not sure whether I'm relieved or disappointed that my dark threats about data mining and the end of privacy appear to be a bit premature. Your leather porn yesterday was just FIIIIINE! You and I skunked up da joint today -- we were scent twins in Une Fleur de Cassie!! After Serge Lutens and Pierre Guillaume, Dominque Ropion is my next best itch scratcher. His stuff just *works* for me.

Jon, that photo yesterday really *got* me. I started crying for no good reason I could identify. Based on your review, Evangeline's comments, and omigod THAT PHOTO, I've already ordered a sample.

kumquat, your photo yesterday for Iris Silver Mist also really got me, and not just because I had just finished crying over Jon's. So evocative and lovely. Thank you for that.

Kiliwia, I thought I was the only one around here who wears Mazzolari Lei! So nice to see someone else in that scent. What did you think? It's so warm and snuggly -- the only cocoa scent I can wear, with the labdanum and patchouli giving it just a hint of naughty!

So nice to see elizrj pop in, if only briefly. Hopefully we'll see more of you after your vacation. We miss you!

Mike, your Jicky and Cumming stories had me giggling. And then you got me all teared up again. So, more big ol' bear hugs coming your way, (((Mike))). It absolutely does get better. Be patient and loving with yourself. By the way, I did my chakra test thing-y. I got #4 -- Harmony. I need to feel love and connection with myself and others. I tend withdraw and shut stuff down. The emotional deep-freeze can seem like a good fix in the moment, but it's incredibly damaging. So, keep doing what you're doing, Mike; you're doing all the right things.

I'm SO glad George is home again with you, danie -- I'm convinced he's smiling in that photo. As much as cats allow themselves to smile. And LOL@ your My Sin story.

Mocha, how you described Serge Lutens made me chuckle: "too abstract, too woody, too dramatic, too much." You're so right -- and all of that is what I love so much about the line and why it suits me so well. Thus, my moniker. I'm glad you found one that speaks to you, though, and De Profundis is a beauty! A number of us on SotD love that one!

I hope you had a fun night of tennis socializing, cello! I've ordered a sample of Querelle, at your urging

    (((Evangeline))), (((30Roses))), and (((kalli)))

ComDiva, I love that saying you posted yesterday. Thank you for sharing it.

ErinK, I'm so glad you took the plunge on En Passant -- you won't be sorry! (Once you get it back from your mom! ) Loves to Rocky the Adorable Scenthound. Does he know his mama or what?!

It's been very busy the last two days but very happy to be back here with you fine-smelling, big-hearted people. xxxooo
