Default Compiled list of so called (old man) scents.

Hello I am not new to the forum, i just retired my old username that i don't use anymore.
I have had this question on my mind for many days and I'm mostly into retro scents, and a few modern.

See sometimes the term old man scent comes up every so often, and to be honest a lot of the perfumes i have would qualify as old man smelling.

    examples of old
    Antaeus
    jazz
    Gucci noble
    Givenchy Gentleman(vintage)

    examples of new
    Mr. Blass Bill Blass
    Givenchy Gentleman(modern)
    terre d'hermes

I just wanted a list of colognes from retro to modern that many would call (old man) smelling as i like these types of perfumes.

If u want u can list 2 or 50 scents.

I probably like the same kinds of fragrances you do, but I would not classify any of them as "old man smelling" so I can't be of any help.

What was older then is now new again. Times are a changin. Lots of old scents that were from the 1960's - fougere types or eau de cologne types might be considered old man scents. Problem is they are mostly worn by younger men now (under 60) so although these might be called "old man" scents because they were worn by older men when they were young, thye were young when they wore them and today they are mostly worn by younger guys who are enjoying the new found retro scents that the old guys used to wear. The old men who used to wear these older fragrances from the 1960's, 70's, 80's etc. (when they were young) have now moved on, been there - done that, and are trying newer things now - stuff you only hear about on Basenotes etc. To me the new "old man" fragrances are things that were built from the chemistry revolution of fresh/aquatic aroma chemicals of the '90's starting with Creed Millisime Imperiale (todays version), Calvin Klein Eternity, Azzaro Chrome, moving through to Aqua di Gio. These fragrances are very prolific and are built around Calone and/or dihydromyrcenol and have that characteristic synthetic citrus cleaning fluid fresh scent - these are the real old man fragrances today because they are still being worn by guys who started wearing them 10 to 15 years ago.

As you can tell, I don't really believe in the concept of "old man" fragrances. It is too much a moving target to be relevant in the fragrance world.

To the OP: People on these forums might take offense with your classification with that age implication. I would simply call these scents... (Out)dated. And, by most common modern day standard, they definitely are.

Subjective to own experience be it a good or a bad one : designating because of a connotation to a past experience that I or others didn't come across to can lead to this statement....

    -Paco Rabanne pour homme
    -Pierre Cardin
    -Aramis by Aramis
    -Drakkar

why these? Because I relate them to a person in his mid-70's that has worn them and that I first encountered on and not per say that it gives an old man vibe is just were I first smelled a specific scent on. Btw, old man smell is down right nasty and basically connotates a foul smell not per say a cologne regardless if strong , pungent or not for colognes are aromatic....so basically old man vibe to me is not showering, and exuding natural body odors condense in an older person that has not taken care of themselves hygienically , so in other words a Hippie which in fact could be young or old......Voila!

People used to tell me that Aramis smelled like their grandfather. I'm sure it's generational, what's considered old smelling--for my generation, old man scents were usually ones heavy on the oakmoss. And I'm not sure those smell as they once did. Aramis seems to be less of what it was, possibly due to oakmoss restrictions, but who knows. "Old lady" scents, on the other hand, seem to be those with lots of overtly powdery and aldehydic notes.

Was not my intent to offend anyone.
Maybe i should have used the word outdated. Retro was used along side old man well because most of what i read
it's the term old man or old smelling and even outdated.

I would also ask if the term barbershop scent is similar to term old man smelling since most if not all
the scents of yesteryear had this vibe.

A barbershop scent IMHO would be royal copenhagen with it's powdery feel, but i don't necessarily see it as old man smelling, while Azzaro pour homme and Rive gauche both give off the just been to a barbershop.

Unless u see baby powder as smelling like an old man

While I love and own large bottles of all three, Chanel Pour Homme, Habit Rouge, and Eau Sauvage are often considered to have that "old man" smell. In fact, when I first tried Eau Sauvage, I immediately thought it should be called "Eau Old Man!" Of course, that's what I like best about them now! Then again, these were all first created in the 1960s.

I sometimes wonder if my kids and grandchildren will ever think something like Acqua di Gio will be "old man" to them...

When i go out and about i don't expect compliment, but when i do i want people to say that is a very mature scent.

I remember a young girl(younger than me) told me she loves when a man wears grey flannel.

And if this is old man or retro - then I am Retro!!!

In a time of youth is everything - we could call them classics, time proven, ideals...?

    Among others:

    Tabac Original
    Fendi Uomo
    Marbert Man
    Francesco Smalto PH
    Worth pour Homme
    Loewe para Hombre
    vintage Cartier Santos
    YSL PH Haute Concentration
    Preferred Stock
    Capucci PH

are among the ones that immediately come to my mind. Yet, like in some of the aforementioned posts, would not call them so much antiquated or old-fashioned, far more, with a timelessness, vision and sense of style not the most popular nowadays (on the other hand, considering that the fashion, trendiness and social acceptability of vintage, is far more recurrent, non-linear and/or repetitive than expected, it would be interesting to see if and when these fragrances may enjoy a comeback even outside the preferences, collections, interactions and members of BN).

My favorite "dated" "masculine" scents, in no order:

    Habit Rouge
    Guerlain Vetiver
    Creed Orange Spice
    Guerlain Derby
    Parfums de Nicolai New York
Behemoth cut a slice of pineapple, salted it, peppered it, ate it, and then tossed off a second glass of alcohol so dashingly that everyone applauded.

I am an old man so if I wear (say) Dior Homme does that make it old man? Or is it like fashion so I should know better? As one or two others have said it's all relative. When I was young the young wore loud stuff - Brut, Halston, Azzaro etc. if you wanted to be cool you went for the "classics" to be "discrete" which in 197n meant, oh yeah, Caron PuH, Chanel PM, Eau Sauvage. But now that's old man too so is there old man and older man? Speaking as an old man I have to admit that there is stuff I'd consider too young, but probably not too old.

There are hundreds, maybe even over a grand of old smelling male fragrances, though, admittedly, many smell like old women, so that doesn't fit your category here.

Add old woman and juvenile and I've found it extremely hard to find anything that isn't one of the above.
