Default Orange... orange... orange... oh oh oh...range!

Yesterday evening, I was on my way home and I passed a guy who smelled pretty marvelous. He was a few steps ahead of me for a block as we were walking down a dark-ish city street, so I didn't feel like it'd be appropriate to stop him and ask what he was wearing - though I have to admit, I was tempted.

He smelled like... something orange? But it was a masculine orange scent. It wasn't a candy orange, like Happy For Men, but it wasn't quite as suit & tie as Terre d'Hermes. It wasn't as pure orange as Little Italy by Bond. It was definitely more masculine and airy than that.

I'm guessing it was a designer scent, since I rarely come across anyone wearing niche here. I do think it smelled more designer than niche.

Any idea what it might have been?

EDITED to add: Don't be afraid to name something obvious. I won't be surprised at all if it's something I smelled once and passed on a long time ago. It's amazing how differently a scent can smell on someone else. If I become a millionaire, I'm going to hire people to follow me around when I test fragrances - random dudes to spray with stuff so I can smell it on someone else. Ooh, and I'll hire a few women to follow us all around too. It's always great to get female feedback. [End Tangent]

EDITED AGAIN to note that, weeks later, I found it! I'm 99% sure I smelled TdH Parfum.

Parfumerie Generale- Bois de Copaiba is a boozy orange that veers into 'L'heure Bleu' territory with its amaretto accord.
Serge Lutens - Mandarine Mandarin is a spiced orange, celery comes into play.

In my opinion: Eau d'Orange Verte or L'Erbolario Neroli, both quite orange-laden, could be less probable but still somehow possible candidates.

That could be a really good guess! I'm wearing Boss Bottled today, and I can't help thinking it's kind of similar, but not. What I smelled yesterday seemed more elegant or gentlemanly than something by Hugo Boss (but, to be fair, I've only smelled a few Hugo Boss scents. It definitely wasn't Boss Orange. I have a sample of that).

I would say maybe Halston Z-14 except it's not 'airy'

Or maybe Eau de Cartier, the orange essence one whatever it's called....except do they still even make that?

I don't know but I love orange so I want to know. I just happened to put on Fleurs d'Oranger and boy do I love it. It's way more floral than what you're talking about, though.

Maybe not, actually. I'll have to seek that out. Is it masculine? What I smelled probably had a floral component to it. Imagine a halfway point between AHS and Terre d'Hermes, but airy.

I'm guessing it's not Z-14. To be fair, I haven't smelled that one, but I imagine it doesn't smell as modern as what I smelled yesterday.

My favorite orange is still Hermes Concentré d'Orange Verte. It's one of the few that smells very natural, and actually lasts a few hours - a high achievement for citrus based fragrances.

I wouldn't call it masculine, it doesn't even smell much like orange.....more like white flowers, mostly jasmine and tuberose to me. I tried Mandarine Mandarin today too. It's very syrupy sweet to me, and more like candied spiced orange peel than a juicy orange.

Sorry I couldn't help more. But honestly New York and Egoiste have my favorite orange notes. I know that not a lot of people think of orange when they smell Egoiste, but when I wear it I smell a beautiful sweet orange mixed in with the other notes, mostly in the early stage.

Interesting! I don't get that from Egoiste, but I still have a bit left in my sample, so I'll have to see if I notice it now that I'm looking for it.

So it was probably something mass market, something available at like Sephora, Macy's, etc. Strong presence of orange, but more masculine than Happy. sounds like it may be Lacoste L.12.12 Blanc/White.. although a listed grapefruit note, it smells more like orange to me. I've been smelling this on a lot of people lately, and last time I was at Sephora, it was up on their "best sellers" shelf, next to AdG, and 1 Million.

Artisan or the Lacoste or something else from Sephora. Maybe Allure Edition Blanc. I doubt the Hermes would last long enough for anyone else to smell it after leaving the house.

It's not AHS. AHS is sort of gummy rather than airy, at least to my nose, and it has an almost candy aspect to the fruit. I've never tried AHS Eau Extreme though - or the sporty-man-scent named Allure Homme Sport Cologne Sport For Men. That could be it actually. I lol at that ridiculous name, but that could be it. Pardon the pun, but that's a wild suggestion. I'd have never thought of it! I wonder if that's still around at Macy's to give a sniff. One of the Ed Hardy scents really impressed me, in a fun-to-wear sort of way, but I was an idiot and didn't write it down. Villain, maybe? I don't think it was Born Wild (and it was so long ago that I don't even remember what it smelled like).

I gave Bleu a better testing last night and - wow - you're right. I'm not a vetiver fan, so I'm guessing the vetiver in Bleu tricked my nose into ignoring a lot of the rest of what's going on in Bleu. I think I've now done a 180 on my impression of the fragrance. It's really impressive. The airiness of it is fantastic and it's very much along the lines of what I smelled.

I wonder how differently vetiver wears on different people. If the vetiver in Bleu were dialed way back... that's what I smelled.

Bleu without the vetiver... if it existed, I'd buy it!!! ...I realize that's blasphemy to vetiver fans and especially Bleu fans. Sorry!

There are lots of great suggestions in this thread.

Seems like Bleu, more than any other fragrance has the ability to change minds from the 1st wearing. I tried it in a store about 2 years ago - didn't care for it at all. 12 months later, I ordered a sample from TPC just for kicks since I was ordering so many other things. Fell in love instantly, and went to the store an hour later and purchased a bottle.

Surprised no one mentioned Heeley Oranges and Lemons Say The Bells of St. Clements - also a very good one IMO. but no powerhouse to be sure.

Try DR Harris Traditional Cologne for a cheap fix. Zingy orange oil with an animalic, powdery Victorian Era musk.

What about that new flanker for Eau de Cartier? It's super orange prominent...Zeste something...try that. I smelled it at Macy's and it's definitely orange!!!
